Has anyone ever been to Las Vegas during New Years? If

so please share your experince with me. My wife and I are thinking about going this New Years.

I hear that rooms are very cheap at the nicer resorts during New Years. Plus, I hear there is a lot to do around Las Vegas. I read some where there is a snow ski resort within a 30 minute to 1 hour drive of Vegas. Man that would be good if that were the case.

Please fill me in on the activities during New Years both on the strip and the surrounding areas of Las Vegas.

Thanks in advance.

Oh wow, no, the rooms are the MOST expensive on New Years Eve. The rooms are the cheapest on Christmas day.

Las Vegas is very busy on New Years. I have done it once - the strip is packed with people and there are fireworks. There are also nice dinner parties that some hotels have - my mother and step-father did that a few years ago at Mandalay Bay - there was a band, dinner, champagne, etc - they had a blast. If you are into clubs they all have some crazy event going on - although I assume that it's not cheap to get in and it's probably also difficult to get in.

Hope this helps. I don't know anything about snow...I avoid it like the plague!

It's the craziest and most expensive few days of the year! Go a week earlier for the great deals.

If $500-1000 a nite is "cheap", then you hear correctly. Otherwise, watching on tv is free.

Did it two years ago.... we are not into the club scene so cant help you out there. due to costs we stayed off strip... we were on the strip for new years and the fireworks... it was the closest thing to death ... I thought I was going to be trampled on after... no breathing room at all after all is said and done... takes forever to move and to finally get off the strip. I am only 5'4 so could see nothing in the mob that literally surrounded me. Am I glad I did it ..... heck yes... would I do it again NO!

We stayed downtown this past NYE. Were were originally going to Las Vegas on January 1, but then I decided to change it to December 30 and be there for NYE. I changed my plans about 2 weeks before NYE. The only room I could get was at the Golden Gate and I paid $99 per night. It was a lot of fun downtown! If you want to go in and out of the casinos downtown on NYE, you have to have a wristband, which cost $60 this past NYE. The Bangles and the Doobie Brothers played at different times on stages that were set up outside. There were also outdoor bars set up. At 12:30 am, there were fireworks off the roof of the Plaza Hotel. These were the best fireworks I have ever seen.

I expected downtown to be totally packed with people. There were a lot of people, but the biggest crowds were around the bands. There was plenty of room to walk around and not bump into everyone. I would definitely go back downtown for NYE.

We were there last year for new years and it was great because there were like 15 of us celebrating a friend's 40th . .. . BUT we stayed downtown, which I wouldn't do again, but it was less expensive - maybe $200 a night at the golden nugget.

There's always stuff to do in vegas - and new year's felt like a big block party.

Clubs require reservations and they will be pricey.

I'm going in a week, can't wait!

I booked for New Years 2009 a couple months ago and got the Hyatt Place Hotel across from the Hard Rock off of hotwire for $54 per night for Dec 30, 31 and then Harrah's for $46 and $56 on Jan 1,2. The Hyatt is a non casino hotel but is a decent chain and you can't beat the price. Free shuttle from the airport, free wifi and cont brkfst. The major hotels for 30,31 were priced way too high for my liking. Not like I will be in the hotel much anyhow on NYE. Can't wait for it.

I've spent New year's Eve both downtown and on the Strip. The downtown party was a lot of fun, and more controlled than on the Strip. Watching the fireworks while standing in the middle of the Strip was great fun, once. It was un-fun beginning about 12:25 am. Street fights rise as the night wears on. I saw more young half-dressed people passed out or bent over trashcans than I'd ever hoped to. The rooms at that time of year are the msot expensive of the year, and most resorts require a 3-day stay. However, the rates immediately drop on Jan. 1, and remain cheap for the following week. A huge (HUGE) convention, the Consuemr electronics Show, rolls into town the second week, driving room rates up and availablitiy down. Also, it is usually very cold at night at that time, dropping down into the 30's and sometimes 20's, so be warned. But that's why you can drive out to Mt. Charleston and ski. Have fun.

I posted this before:

We've done it 3 times. Once on the Strip and twice downtown.

Here's the scoop. It is only unbearable as far as crowds go on the Strip that night from about 8:00 to right after midnight. I would not venture out of whatever hotel I was in from about 9:00 - midnight. It took our friends an hour and a half to walk to Aladdin from MGM because the crowds were so thick. We stayed and played at Aladdin and walked right outside at midnight, looked up, saw the fireworks and went back in. We waited for about an hour and then ventured out and everything was fine.

Downtown is not bad because they have band stages set up on two different cross streets and Fremont, so the crowds are mainly around those two bandstands. You buy a wristband and that will get you anywhere you want to go. It's fun downtown at midnight because they do a countdown on the canopy and they shoot confetti all over the place!

I would reserve your air as soon as you can. Hotel prices are pretty steep, but you can find some decent deals if you are on top of it and don't wait until the last minute. We did a package deal (air and hotel) for downtown twice and it was only about $600 each. When we stayed on the Strip, we stayed at Aladdin and paid $500 for three nights, which is not bad for New Years. We typically get free nights, but usually not at New Years.

Personally, we absolutely love going for New Year's. There is an excitement in the air and you feel it!
