Is there anything we should be wary of in Vegas?

Hi all

I am going to Vegas in April 09 and cannot wait to get there !! I know that wherever you go in the world there are places to avoid and things to be wary of etc..

Is there any tips or advice on what to look out for in Vegas ?

Thanks :-)

Just don't wander off the strip at night, otherwise, no worries.

Hi Wetrug (loving the name)!!

Thanks for your reply.

Is Freemont St a bit dodgy at night?

Be wary of pickpockets. There are professional thiefs that thrive in LV. Men shouldn't carry their wallet in their back pocket, and women should carry a purse that is deep and that has a shoulder strap.

You'll never spot them but they can spot someone that is naive in a second. They work in pairs and they are professionals.

I was really naive the first time I went gambling. I sat down at a slot machine and placed about $60 dollars in rolled coins in the slot tray for what had to be less than 5 minutes. All of a sudden, someone ran into me (to the right). I turned to see who it was and what was happening. Then I turned back to play the slot and noticed all of my money had been stolen out of the slot tray. Apparently, after the first person bumped into me, the second came from the other direction and grabbed my money. This all occurred in less than 15 seconds.

Just use common sense and you'll be fine. I also recommend:

Use traveler's checks.

Don't carry large amounts of cash. If you win big, place extra cash in your room safe.

wary of? yes, gambling too much and coming home broke :)

Agree with previous poster...if you're onfoot, don't stray from the strip. Downtown-freemont street has more problems than the strip. Freemont street is fine if you stay in the middle of the street, just don't go away from that block *at night*

April is a good time to visit! The weather is nice, you may see a little rain, enjoyable for walking down the strip. Make sure to bring comfortable shoes, the strip is deceptive, you'll be walking miles and miles.

Thanks for the advice Bham.

Also thanks to Cyn - I am glad you said April is a good time to go. I am actually getting married so that will make the trip that bit more special to us x

You are so lucky to be living there !!

Hi

Do go downtown to Fremont and take a short walk past the end of the canopy to check out Main st Station, good food in the triple 7 brewery. At the other end of the canopy you can see old neon signs put there by the museum, worth a look.

Be very aware you can eat too much!

I believe that I've read that Main Street Station has one of the BEST buffets in LV.

Also don't talk to the porn slappers or time share sharks...well unless you want to learn more about purchasing relationships (but think many of them are not allowed to talk to pedestrians anyway), or lose a day of your vacation talking about time shares. ugh

Pickpockets, purse snatchers. mostly out on the strip sidewalk I had some 80 year old guy bump me, and I grabbed for my wallet and managed to break his fingers. in front of Ballys.

The TI sirens show supposedly is the #1 spot because of the crowds on the sidewalks. Bus rides can be costly.

Most of the slots are TITO. but, watch your coin buckets at old machines on Fremont St. Don't walk away from a slot with money in it.

Overall, Vegas is probably as safe as it gets for a big city, its mostly quick, sneaky stuff, non violant, by pro's

Downtown is not dodgey. The people who claim it is either have not been downtown or have not been downtown in the last few years. I prefer downtown to the strip anytime. There are a lot of bicycle police constantly on Fremont.
