Fremont Street is the main street of Downtown Las Vegas, the original area of the city that was there decades before the Strip was thought of.

It's a totally different vibe from the Strip. Everything is within easy walking distance and the hotels and casinos are a lot more downscale. With a couple of exceptions you won't find many fine dining options there. In the last decade or so the Fremont Street Experience has seen a large canopy with accompanying light show in the evenings built over the central blocks of Fremont Street.

Many people go regularly to Vegas and only stay Downtown without venturing onto the Strip. Similarly a lot of Strip regulars don't enjoy Downtown at all! If you've got more than just a few nights in Vegas then you really should check it out for yourself. Unless you specifically want to gamble there, head Downtown in the evening rather than the daytime. It's around six miles from center Strip. A taxi would be around $20 plus tip each way. Alternatively you could take the Deuce bus but be aware that it can be crowded and slow on occasions.

Fremont Street is the Vegas you'll recognise from all the old films and would agree it's well worth a visit.

The first time we went there we broke our journey at the Stratosphere to watch the sunset and lights come on over the Strip. As the Stat is quite isolated this is a good way of killing two birds with one stone. I would take the Deuce as it gives you an opportunity to see the 'no mans land' between the Strip and Fremont.

There's enough to do and see in Fremont to kill an evening and some excellent dining options, a lot cheaper than the Strip. As well as the lightshow you can goggle at the Golden Nugget's swimming pool complete with shark tank with water slide running through it! If you make it to Main Street Station, they have a chunk of the Berlin Wall in the Gents.

Don't miss the $1.99 shrimp cocktails at the Golden Gate!

I believe that Downtown both the Golden Nugget and Binion's are still offering $10 free slot play to new signups as well.

We turned $10 at the Nugget into $80 in 5 minutes back in 2006.

Downtown is well worth a visit. We have been down to in the evening once using the Deuce but never again. There was 300+ people (well it seemd that much) trying to get back to the Strip on that evening and it took ages. We swore we'd never use the Deuce to go Downtown ever again. Daytime is easier, but of course then you miss out on the light show but I still think it is a fun experience at any time of the day.

My wife and I spent 5 days in Vegas in June. We stayed at MGM and rented a car. Having the car made if very easy to get around. We went to Fremont street our first nite and got hooked. Went back two more nites. You must go to see the light show over the street..starts at 9pm, lasts about 15 min then it happens every hour till midnite. Also, there are some very good entertainers on the street who play music. We stood and watched Carl Farris play his sax every nite we went there...another must. You can also get some great deals on dinners there, not the most fancy, but great value.

Do not miss the Fremont street experience.

If you are in Vegas for more than 3 nights you should visit downtown at least one night. You may love it or you may hate it but it is something everyone should experience for him/herself. It is very very different from the strip.
