Please help!! IP or upgrade

Brief synopsis, last weekend was perusing the Harrahs website for hotel reservation pricing for a possible trip to Vegas. Live in Chicago and gamble weekly at the Ameristar casino, and have not frequented a Harrahs facility in over a year. With this in mind activated my Harrahs card along with "companions card" to find out that we would be comped three nights at the IP (November 9 -12), trip includes my Mom (70th birthday) wife, myself along with our 14 year old daughter.

In my excitement said what the heck decided to book it without any information regarding the IP (can't argue with free, my thought process was it is a Harrahs property so it must be ok, we have only visited LV once that being eight years ago)

With this in mind after reading the reviews regarding the IP was contemplating upgrading to a sister Harrahs property for a reduced room rate.

My main concern is my 14 year old and Mom, will the room at the IP be sufficient or should we upgrade our hotel?

About us, we do not need lavish marble flooring the only upgrade that we would thoroughly enjoy is 2 bathrooms.

After booking the room, sent two personalized emails thanking the customer service agent and received two very nice replys from the agent and her supervisor. Also contacted Ameristar were we frequent (Premier member) and was told sorry we don't have a property in Vegas but how about 2 free buffets! My response was I haven't visited Harrahs in a year and they are going to comp myself and family 3 nights and your facility where I drop on average 500 a week is going to comp myself a buffet??? No wonder Ameristar is up for sale. Sorry for that just built up frustration.

Therefore I have started gambling at the Harrahs locations here in Illinois/Indiana to build up my rewards points.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Free is Free, I'd stay with the IP. :)

I have stayed at the IP twice, once in the standard room and once in the Deluxe room. The IP is a basic hotel, but VERY clean. Both rooms had a balcony overlooking the strip, which was nice. I didn't like their buffet, but the cafe is ok. I loved the location, it can't be beat, center strip!

So if a basic clean room is acceptable, I'd stay put, I have not stayed at other Harrah's properties. I know IP is the lowest level, but I think it may depend on how much more the upgrade is to determine if its worth it.

After researching the reduced room rates, varies from 300 (Harrahs) to 700(Ceasars) with the other properties in between.

Hello from a fellow Harrah's and Ameristar card member!

I agree with your frustration about Ameristar (couldn't resist) LOL

We haven't stayed at IP in Vegas, but if it is free and as long as you have the frame of mind that it is NOT a 5 star property, you and the family will be fine!

Our friends have stayed at IP several times since it was comped and said the room was clean even though not as lavish as other strip properties, and I would also suggest asking politely when you check-in (and stress you haven't been to Vegas for almost 10 years) if the hotel can upgrade your rooms...never hurts to ask!

topeka ducky, I sent an email to Ameristar and not five minutes elapsed I received a return phone call, after explaining the situation the Casino Host stated verbatim " I can't blame you if your decision is to gamble at Harrahs." Needless to say I was flabbergasted.

blah, blah, blah...same old story! We also have an Argosy in Kansas City (one of our posters here named Gnejs works at their hotel), and it is a nice property, BUT we gamble at Harrah's in KC since we can accumulate and use out credits in Vegas and all other Harrah's locations.

AND...I just checked the other night and had 2 free nights at KC, but I'm saving for Vegas! LOL

I think even though the IP isn't one of the top notch hotels, it is a good bargain since it is in a perfect location on the strip for your whole family...and be sure to visit Harrah's, Flamingo, Bill's, Bally's, and Paris since they are all part of Total Rewards (and Rio if you make it out there)

I am a Harrah's Diamond but find myself liking Ameristar in East Chicago more, too. I sometimes wish Ameristar had ended up with the Tropicana instead of the morons who got it. I haven't really tried anything with the Players Club but I hope that they would at least be generous with offers for cities where they do have hotels. The casino in St. Louis is nice and the new hotel is supposed to be really cool, too.

I usually end up being able to get IP free and another Harrah's property for $40 a night casino rate for midweek. I would ask for a breakdown on the cost because I am wondering if they are charging you for an extra person. It looks like anyone can get a basic room at Harrah's for $300 for those dates. Otherwise the price may be so high because of the holiday. If it's really $300 for one room at Harrah's, I would have to think about staying at IP for free, as much as I dislike the place.

Thanks for the reply Leo, i was also wondering that since my rewards card point balance at Harrahs is now zero (after booking reservations) that if I were to cancel my reservations at IP would the points be reinstated on my card for a better hotel at a much lower rate?

Agree on Ameristar we enjoy gambling there but the return is terrible. Also viewed the casino in St. Louis the hotel looks beautiful.

They don't take points from your card when you book a reservation. They only take them at checkout if you choose to use them towards your bill. Are you sure they didn't expire?

I've never stayed at IP . . . just haven't enjoyed the vibe when I've visited. Normally wouldn't recommend it . . .

But hey . . . free is free . . . if it's clean and comfortable . . . what the heck! And the location is excellent!
