Anyone have any thoughts on Sun Country Airlines?

We are booked to fly Sun Country Nov 13th and 17th with credit cards miles and a voucher...they filed Chapter 11 today and gave notice that they could shut down as early as December 1st. I am not worried...yet. Should I be? Any thoughts?

Sorry but I would be worried. Are the miles you have and voucher only good on Sun Country? I would call and ask if you could transfer to another airline if they fold.

The voucher was a prize I won....some prize, huh? and the tickets are non refundable and non transferable, I am not sure what the stipulations are in a case like this...I will be wathcing the news to see what happens next. NWA was in chapter 11 for quite awhile and came out unscathed according to the news today, and now they are merging with Delta..

Daughter in Mpls area where Sun Country is headquartered said CEO was being acused of fraud. Don't know how this fits into Chapter 11, but it doesn't sound good.

Perhaps it's just blind hope, but I'm "hoping" they get restructured and will stay in business.

Yes, it is connected to Petter's fraud charges . . . I'm thinking the charges are freezing assets and otherwise tying things up within his companies.

I sure hope they stay in business, they're our favorite carrier to Vegas!

Even if they close up before November which depends if they can get DIP financing; it is likely someone will either honor their tickets outright or at a minimum offer cheap fares for their distresed passengers.

We love Sun Country too!

I would think for a Nov. flight, you will be fine.

I heard that this is related to the whole Petter's mess. They would under normal circumstances borrow $$ for payroll and expenses, but can't now they they are independed of Petter's. If he (Petter's) screwed up this whole thing and Sun Country folds, I hope he goes to prison for a long time.

I pulled this off Sun Country's website for anyone here who is interested, like me. So far all the local news channels here are saying "business as usual".

SUN COUNTRY AIRLINES BANKRUPTCY FILING – October 6, 2008

"Today, Petters Aviation, LLC and its subsidiaries, including MN Airlines, LLC, d.b.a. Sun Country Airlines filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code.

The decision to file for bankruptcy was based upon the adverse effects from recent events at Petters Group Worldwide Inc. This move affords us protection while we reorganize the business to be successful.

Sun Country will continue to operate business as usual. We will continue to fly our normal schedule. We will continue to operate under the same guidelines with regards to ticketing, refunds, changes and all other transactions.

We want to be clear that Sun Country customers have nothing to worry about if they have purchased a ticket on the airline. We are meeting our financial obligations and have every confidence we will continue to fly. Our credit card bank retains the funds until the passengers fly and would refund those funds if for some reason any flights were cancelled.

The management and employees feel very confident about the future of our great airline."

The whole financial situation according to what I have read states they would normally rely on Petters for a short term loan to get them through until the heavy winter travel season, and in light of the recent event with Tom Petters, that will not happen and have forced the drastic measures they have taken.

My family likes Sun Country Airlines and I hope it can pull through this.

Here's my own little Sun Country/Vegas story:

In July 2001 I started work with ATA Airlines, based in Chicago. I survived our 9/11 cutbacks (how, I still don't know!) and in December my best friend and I were looking at going on a little mid-week holiday shopping trip to the Mall of America just outside Minneapolis. A couple of days beforehand, though, Sun Country filed for their first bankruptcy and totally shut down at the time. ATA announced it would honor their tickets for a service fee. So, suddenly our 6 x a day flights between Chicago-MDW and MSP became very full. My friend and I brainstormed the night before where we should go, as it no longer looked like we'd get on any MSP flight stand-by. She suggested Vegas, and I reluctantly agreed, having never been before. I got a $40 a night airline employee rate at Monte Carlo and we got on the first flight out the next day. Obviously I hated it so much I only went back 15 more times, with #17 coming up next month!

Anyways, that's how Sun Country affected my life. Thank you so much! And yes, I would be very worried to have them as my means of transportation. Last time they shut down with NO notice, I wouldn't put it past them to do it again. Also, I believe I read

that Mr. Petters owes somewhere in the neighborhood of $10 million combined in markers at different Vegas casinos. I could just see Steve Wynn hiring a repo man to take a Boeing 737 as collateral!
