Possible dumb Las Vegas question ;-)

Ok, here it goes! We are flying into Las Vegas in August at 10:00 pm. We've been to LV before and have no plans to do anything this time. HOWEVER, we'd love to take the kids for a drive through the city. Last time we were there, we didn't have a car, so I feel like we missed out on some of the sites. We stayed at the Monte Carlo and stayed only on the street that it was located. I never did see that famous "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas NV" sign. I'd like to see that, the street that Dan Tanna drive down in "Vegas" and also a drive down the street where the Bellagio hotel is.

So here is my dumb question: Do anyone have a drive itinerary that would take us down a few famous streets, but wouldn't take too long? We would probably drive around after we got off the plane and we'll probably be tired, so I don't want it to take too long.

Thanks in advance if you can help. ;-)

Here's a map of the strip.

Stevesgirl you do know that most hotels/casinos face Las Vegas Blvd and the streets along side the casinos only lead to the entrances and parking garages, right? Maybe I don't understand your question. Care to rephrase?

No, I guess I didn't know that. So everything that we'd want to see is on LV BLVD? Like I said, last time we were there we stayed on LV BLVD and we walked the entire time, so I know for sure that we didn't see everything (that's one long street!).

Thanks for the map info. ;-)

The Bellagio is on the same "street" as the Monte Carlo and is actually next door barring the City Center development.

The "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign is also on the strip, it's north. It's actually before all the hotels start up. You can just drive all the way down the strip and see the Bellagio fountains, the Mirage Volcano, etc., then turn around a little past Circus Circus, or at the Strat. If you continue down the Strip (which is LV Blvd.), you'll end up down town where the FSE and Golden Nugget and all those are. Whole different vibe down there, we really enjoy it.

The only draw back to this is the traffic. Depending on when you go, it'll be bumper to bumper, and the lights always seem to be red, for some reason. :) But the lights, sights and sounds are worth it.

Have a ball! :)

The Vegas sign area now has parking. If you come out of Monte Carlo go right, it is past Mandalay Bay. I would say about 5 to 10 minutes away.

If you don't want to drive, take the Deuce down the strip and get a seat on the second level. $7 for a 24 hour pass. You can take it at night and see the strip lit up. It goes all the way down downtown (Fremont Street), take in the light show, jump back on and return to your hotel.

This is a slow ride about 40 minutes (from MGM) due to strip traffic, but I like that it is slow because I like to people watch and take in the sights.

The Las Vegas sign is south- not north. If you went from the LV Sign to CC and then back again- it is going to be a long ride on the strip. If you take the Duece bus instead of driving- it is going to a really long ride because it makes stops at just about every hotel.

Do you have to take the "tour" as soon as you arrive? Couldn't you put if off until the next day since you don't have any plans this time?

Hi everyone, Thanks for answering my dumb question. ;-) I see on Wikipedia that it is on the south end, but it's not the original sign or it's one of two. Anyway, it looks like it'll be a long drive up the strip, but unfortunately it's our only chance to go see it as we do have plans for the next day -- heading to Hoover Dam and then onto the Grand Canyon. So, this is our only chance to take the kids to see the lights. Thanks again everyone for your help!

What day of the week are you going to be there? If it's a weeknight the traffic at 10:00 pm should be much less that if it were a Weekend Night.

Good luck and have a great trip!

Many movie and TV shows from years past, such as "Vegas," had shots of cars driving down Fremont Street (downtown), which is no longer open to traffic. It was closed and covered with the canopy as part of the creation of the Fremont Street experience. You can walk it on foot now.
