Choosing among hotels in Vegas...need help, please!

We will be in Vegas in August, a family of 4, with kids ages 10 & 14, for 2 nights before heading to Arizona, and for 2 nights on our way back. I've been monitoring specials on hotels. The whole trip is costing us a fortune, so I'm trying to save a little where I can...and there are great deals right now in Vegas....

We have the opportunity to stay in 2 different places...that is, 2 nights when we arrive, and 2 nights before we depart. I have it "narrowed down" to 4 places...although I may have thrown a 5th into the mix, but not sure. Now I am in a quandary!

The choices:

Excalibur

Luxor (seems the pool, while beautiful, is not very deep, and I want a place the kids can really have fun in the water, so I'm on the fence....)

Bally's

Palace Station (off strip)

Palace Station includes breakfast, which is a nice bonus. I stayed there once, for a wedding, and it was fine, and I'm thinking maybe Palace Station before we leave to go home, and on the strip when we arrive...???

Help! Any thoughts are appreicated.

Friends of ours just returned from Vegas, and they said the problem with the strip/casino hotels was that there was smoke everywhere, and so their kids didn't even like walking into the hotels...which would be a reason to stay off strip or in a non-casino hotel.

(I've seen reasonable rates at some of the non-casino hotels and time shares, but the ones around our price range tend to be 1 bed and a pull-out, which my family doesn't love... We like 2 beds with a roll-away option.)

Also, Planet Hollywood, though a little more expensive, has some nice deals now...wondering if it's worth going there....

I'm interested in your opinions! THANKS!

Nothing wrong with two hotels, but on your list it's probably Excalibur as the best choice. All casinos will be smokey to a degree, I'm not sure there's a difference between on- and off-Strip.

Best combination of little-kid friendly and economical on the Strip. Note that none of the hotels' pools will be very deep, though, and Excal will have the most other kids in the pool for your's to play with.

You should consider one of the off-strip properties with some additional family amenities, e.g. South Point is usually reasonably priced and has a bowling alley and movie theater on-site.

For your situation, I would go with whatever is cheaper between Excalibur or Luxor. They are right next to each other. Excalibur is probably more kid-friendly.

There's absolutely no reason for you to spend the money to stay on the Strip. The choices off-strip are much more family-friendly.

My top choice would be South Point. Larger rooms than your other choices. A great family pool, movie theatre and bowling alley. Many reasonable dining choices.

My second recommendation would be Orleans.

These hotels attract families and provide a better environment. And being off-strip also provide much greater value.

It would be the older low end Hotels such as Palace Station that would be smokier then the newer ones, plus places like Palace Station and Orleans are where many LV locals hang out.

My choices would be Escalibur or Luxor..

Also as one poster said South Point if you dont mind being miles away from the action of the strip.

Thank you, all! Good info all around, and I just knocked Palace Station off. Last thing we need is MORE smoke, especially off the strip! I am leaning towards Excalibur when we arrive (an dmaybe the dinenr theater show one night, if I get 2-for-1 tkts), and maybe Luxor before we leave.

Bally's didn't seem to wow anyone who responded....

I did look into Southpoint, but the rooms are about 3 times the prices I have for the Luxor and Escalibur, and more than twice the rates at Bally's...but I just signed on for their e-mails, so I'll see what their specials are. (Truthfully, I don't see us spending time bowling or seeing movies in Vegas, when we can do that at home, but I appreciate the info.)

I do get the Orleans e-mails, but I guess nothing has come by to knock my socks off, but I'll keep my eyes open.

As always, thank you to all you great TripAdvisor readers!

What activities are you planning on doing with the kids while in Vegas? I would think Luxor or Excaliber would be good choices, but it depends on what you are planning on doing....

Ballys is a good hotel with large rooms but there is absolutely nothing to do there for kids.

Orleans would be my choice. They have a free shuttle to the strip and lots more things for kids to do.

Steph124NY, you ask what we're planning to do while in LV. I appreciate the question, and opinions are welcome...

I'm still collecting info, and then will sit down and make a list of "must do" or "must see" things, and then a list of "if we have time but not so important" things. Our kids are good travelers, and we tend to do a lot involving nature and history on our vacations; Vegas will be a bit different, as just being on the Strip is part of the experience.

So, some things I'm considering:

Bellagio fountain, and the pirate show at treasure Island...and maybe the statues at Caesar...maybe Mandalay Bay shark reef...maybe Mirage Volcano. I know things are not as close as they seem, so I'll have to map things out to see what we do...haven't gotten to that yet.

At least 1 evening show, which may be the Excalibur dinner theater, or something else, depending on prices at the time (looking for discounts at the booths on the Strip).

Just taking in the Disneyland-esque look of the Strip...and wandering into some hotels.

Atomic museum (off strip).

Possibly Ethel Chocolate factory...more for the cactus garden than for the factory tour. (We've been to a couple of chocolate factories...love to see factory tours, but not a priority in Vegas!)

Cooling off at the pool.

Hoover Dam (plan on spending 1/2 a day here)

MAYBE Liberace museum...I have great memories of watching him when I was a little kid, with my grandmother...again, not a must, and I understand it is small and doesn't take a lot of time, and it may be a kick for our kids, depending on what else we're doing.

MAYBE Titanic exhibit...my son loves history and has read a lot about the Titanic, so that would be neat for him/us

If it were not so hot, and if we were not going to AZ, then we might go to Red Rocks Canyon, but we'll probably pass on that this visit.

We will arrive in the afternoon, have a full day, and then leave sometime the morning of the 3rd day.

Coming back, we'll get back from Arizona one afternoon, then have another full day, and then just have the morning before a mid-afternoon flight.

We will have a rental car...and be traveling for 10 nights...

Thanks!
