My hubby and I just returned from Vegas! We had a ball. Here's what we did!
I have to post this now before I forget the names of everything!
Flight: Delta from Atlanta to LV, no problems ($289.20 x 2 round trip)
Car Rental: Alamo, $118 for 5 days. We loved checking in online, picking out our car and the speedy process of getting out of there pronto!
Hotel: Golden Nugget ($207.56 total for 4 nights), VIP check in $19.95) The check in was nice because we didn't have any line to stand in, but I don't know if it's worth the $20. We did get a room on the 10th floor which had a nice view, and didn't require any waiting for elevators. I don't know if that's coincidence or part of the VIP. Rooms are clean and seem larger than normal, a great location, maids cleaned nicely (left $5 each day). The A/C was noisy, but it might have helped to drown out any hall noises. We enjoyed it, especially for the price! We definitely will come back and prefer downtown over the strip.
We went to the Hoover Dam. What a great thing to see. It's an easy drive. Park on the Nevada side ($7) and walk around. We didn't do any tours but were glad we got there early (8:45am) to see it all before the tourists showed. That new bridge is going to be incredible!
Sam's Town was nice. We wanted to check it out because I hear so much about it. It was nice! We met some neat people downtown who were staying there. I think it's somewhere we might try again.
Gordie Brown: What a show!! We got tickets at the discount place for 1/2 off and 4th row. He is hilarious! I don't think I've ever laughed so much! His energy, singing, dancing, impersonations, etc. last for 2 hours straight. He even went into the audience because a WW2 POW was celebrating his 60th anniversary. Gordie was so sweet in singing "America" while standing beside the man. It brought tears to my eyes. I really think he would be a great host of the grammies or oscars one day!
Art Show at Bellagio: Warhol, Lichtenstein, and friends. I enjoyed this show even though there were only 16 pieces to see. The cost was $23 for my hubby and I (I had a teacher discount and hubby had the AAA discount). It was interesting and something different. My hubby wouldn't do it again. :)
Gambling: Everyone was so nice with teaching me how to play craps at the Golden Nugget. The guys working really wanted me to do well and they had great suggestions. It just didn't click with me, but my hubby loved playing! I played the slots. I would win and lose, and don't think I lost much this trip, like I have in the past. It was fun!
Downtown: The Summer of '69 theme is so much fun! It's right up my alley with bands depicting the Beatles and the Doors. I loved the shows! We met so many nice people. It's very laid back compared to the strip.
Food: We tried lots of places.
Binions downstairs for breakfast: good, not terrific, but hit the spot.
Triple 7 Restaurant at Main Street Station: great atmosphere and good food. We had the fried mushrooms and fish and chips. Lots of food and great service.
Magnolia's at 4 Queens: had a coupon for 2 for 1 and decided to try it. It was delicious! I was really impressed with the prices, the service, the watercolors on the wall. Not what I expected.
Carson Street Cafe in Golden Nugget: open 24 hours with great food and service. We couldn't believe how fast our food arrived, but it took a long while for our check/credit card to be taken. It's fun to people watch while eating there!
Hugo's Cellar in 4 Queens: expensive, but so worth it! We just decided to give it a try and we are so glad we did!! The ladies get a rose, the salads are made to your tasting at the table. The lobster and steak was perfect, the chocolate covered desserts were heavenly. I just can't say enough about the romantic atmosphere and careful service of this place. It was such a nice treat! We did eat expensive items and had a $175 bill. I have only ate somewhere as nice a few other times. I highly recommend it if you're willing to pay the price (so glad that my hubby suggested it!)
Anyway, we had a great time, as always!! Is there such thing as a bad LV trip?? The only complaint I had was the road construction downtown made it hard to find the Golden Nugget's parking garage. Also, we were asked a few times to give someone a dollar or two. We just said "no" and went on with things. I guess it comes with the territory!
I stayed at the GN over Halloween last year and had a blast downtown. I liked their cafe, too, and loved their pool. I'm booked for late Dec. and am staying at Harrah's only because I want to be close to my favorite LV attaraction; The Carnival Court's flair bartenders! Nice report and glad you had a good time.
Great TR, thanks!
You got a good rate @ the GN. I was wondering one thing about the vip check-in. I read somewhere on here there's a lounge for the vip check-in that has a cooler with complementary n/a beverages. My qusetion is if you pay the vip fee can you go the lounge & grab free beverages after check-in & throughout your stay.
Yes I confess I am a cheapo.
Sounds like you had a nice trip, and got to try some new things.
VIP checkin? Could you please describe what this included, and is it offered to everyone?
From what I understood (on here) is that there are limited VIP check-ins that anyone can purchase for $20. I heard about the free beverages, but forgot to ask. All I know is we skipped the long line waiting to check in. Supposedly we also get a "better"room. Ours was great, but I have nothing to compare it to. After a long travel day, it was nice to walk up and get our room immediately. We checked in early, too, around 11:45am, which they said on the phone would be more possible with VIP check-in.
I'm sorry I couldn't help anymore, but after reading about so many recommendations to get this, we decided to.
ktinca, just to add to what duncmelsmom said about the VIP check-in. When I booked my April stay, the clerk asked if I'd like to add it for $20. I said no, but asked if I could change my mind if the other person going with me decided to take them up on it.
He said that they had a certain amount of VIP spots per day and I could always add it later if it was still available.
What it includes is separate, quicker check-in area (w/ bev) and a guarantee of the room you requested. Since we had requested 2 beds anyway, and there are more of them, I opted to not go with the VIP check-in.
Sorry Duncmelsmom, meant to add: Thanks for the Downtown TR, and glad you had a good time.
Thanks for sharing a great downtown TR.
