Rent a car for the week or not

Wife and I are going the 3rd week in August, so it will be hot (so limited walking). Already going to rent for 1 day to go to Hoover Dam and VOF. Going from a 1 day rental to a 7 day rental is +$182. Renting for the week removes costs for airport transfer ($30), monorail ($70 for two 10 ride tickets) and cab fees to go to Fremont and a couple of shows but adds a bit for valet tips. Basically a wash $$$ wise. How much traffic on the strip during the day or evening on Mon-Fri? From everything I've read, the Deuce is not an option if you want to get somewhere in a reasonable amount of time. What do others who have been to LV think.

Thanks.

We stay downtown and always rent a car. Sometimes the traffic is backed up on Las Vegas Blvd. but it does move. It also depends on construction. We were there last week and after a show at the Luxor one part of the road was down to one lane on the way back. Other than that, it wasn't too bad. Just allow extra time as you never know. It's way to hot in the summer for me to do much walking in that heat!!

Strip traffic doesn't really come into it if you want to drive around. Using the streets that run parallel to the Strip (Koval to the east and Dean Martin to the west) makes getting around in bearable traffic quite easy. A quick look at a map should help you with this.

I/we have a car in Vegas on every trip and I personally couldn't be without one.

I personally always rent a car, yes the traffic can at times be heavy and yes the new city center is causing more of a traffic problem than usual.

Having a car at your disposal is convenient and allows you to come and go as you want.

A few things I did notice last week, a few times some of the valets were a bit slower than usual and once the Venetian valet told me they were full.

Other then that the cost of a car can well pay for itself if your doing cabs back and forth to the airport and along the strip. In the scheme of things renting a car is cheap.

IMO I would never recommend taking busses let alone waiting for one in 105 temps.

If your going to drinking a lot then renting a car might not be the way for you to go.

Many do not rent cars because of the cost and the traffic. They prefer to walk, take busses, and use the monorail.

Renting a car gives you the opportunity to get out and see what LV is really like other then just the strip....

I would never be in Vegas without a rental car. The first two times I went I did not get one and did not really enjoy Vegas. There is so much to see outside of Vegas that You need a car to see.

We will be there the same time as you and i have found the rates to be very high this year. The rental for 4 days is $140.

Since we are not going anywhere farther than downtown (maybe) we have decided not to rent a car. As I posted in another place, between the added cost of valet tips, the ability to drink and other minor issues with car rentals, we are just going to take that money for the rental and help support the cab drivers in Vegas.

We don't go to Vegas to go off the strip very often (usually just for Rosemary's) so it doesn't pay for us to do it.

If that $182 is in addition to the one day off the strip, I would just do it for the one day. Maybe you can combine it with arriving or departing to add the savings of one airport cab trip.

I don't bother with a car, it's just a hassle on the strip. We usually walk or if need be taxi. That's also because i like to have a drink or two in the casino or restaurant and don't like the restrictions that cars place on me. If you are not on a particular timetable you could however plan your day so that you aren't driving on the strip at the busiest times. You would also be able to drive to in and out

We rented a car last year for the first time. It worked out great, especially since we were staying off of the strip. We were able to see much more and find our way around pretty well. We are planning on renting a car for our trip this year as well.

I too like having a car at my disposal. I’ve been to Vegas many, many times and I feel trapped if I don’t have the ability to get in a car and go somewhere. If you have plans to see and do lots of different things, I’d go for the car rental. If on the other hand you planned on sticking by the hotel and doing most things within walking distance, then I’d forgo the car.
