Helicopter/airplane tours of the Grand Canyon from Vegas

Hi everyone

Sorry to post another topic on this old chestnut but hopefully my query is slightly different!

I've only got a short stay in Vegas I dont have time to stay at the Grand Canyon. I've read other posts which say that the South Rim is the best place to start from.

So, having looked around it looks as if the "Grand Canyon Odyssey" on the Scenic.com website fits the bill - they pick you up, fly you to the helicopter and then take you back again.

But does anyone have any opinion on this tour? There's 5 of us so it'll total over $1500 so I want to make sure I'm getting a decent tour!

Are there any alternatives from Vegas? (ie without hiring an RV and driving for hours!)

Thanks in advance for any advice!

To see the South Rim, you can still drive it in one day...just rent a minivan for the 5 of you. Plan on a 5 hour trip each way. If you leave at 6 am and spend four hours at the South Rim, you can be back in Vegas by 8 pm. It's a lot of driving but it's really not that bad. You'll save a lot of money too!

You could also take a bus tour to the South Rim.

Not exactly sure what you meant by "any alternatives".

The only way to see the South Rim is drive there yourself, take a bus, plane, or helicopter.

Sorry to be unclear - by alternatives I meant are there any alternative tours of this kind departing from Vegas?

I take your point about the driving option but dont want to spend so long driving - I drive for a living so spend far too much time doing this! Also 5hrs each way is almost as much as you can do in the UK so to us its a long, long time!

The Grand Canyon is almost as big as the UK so that's why the drive takes so long.

The South Rim is the only place where you will see what you expect to see at the GC. I'd also advise driving so you can have some meaningful time there. The flight tour not only is costly, but it is literally a fly by.

mattdUK,

I looked at scenic.com. That is a huge chunk of change to see the Grand Canyon but I understand the "Odyssey" package has all the buzzers and bells, Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, etc. I am sure the sights you see will be nothing less than amazing. If you are comfortable with spending that kind of money then it sounds great. My feeling is that you are in for a long day, you will not be the only ones on the tour, and you will have a confining schedule and must leave an attraction whether you are ready to or not. I think if the Grand Canyon is a priority for you, I would book a ground tour when you get to Vegas. It will be much less expensive. Happy planning. You will have a wonderful time no doubt.

A lot comes down to just what your priorities are. A lot of people look upon GC as just another thing to check off of a list whilst in Vegas, much like the Bellagio fountains or Fremont Street Experience. In reality it's a destination in its own right.

I don't know how long you actually have in Vegas but if an American visitor asked you for advice saying they only had a short time in London but really wanted to see the Lake District, I'd like to think you'd tell them to concentrate on seeing as much of London as they could, making the most of their time there and saving the Lakes for another time when they could do it the justice it deserves. I'd personally suggest you think along similar lines.

I take your point blagger and everyone - I would certainly like to spend time there but the main purpose of the trip is for me and my gf to get married and we are bringing the kids along (hence 5 people).

We are only planning to stay 4 nights in total so dont even have a window to overnight at the GC and the flight was a way of showing the kids who've never been in a helicopter either.

Maybe I have to think about a separate trip for just the two of us??!!

Hi Matt

The cost for the trip isn't too bad for 5 considering what you get but..............

I agree with Blagger, 4 nights in LV is a short trip from the UK, and jet lag will cover 2 of those unless you have already been in the states for a while before visiting LV.

We spent $980 on a sunset helicopter trip (west rim) with Sundance and whilst it was very enjoyable it was not the experience I wanted from a trip to the GC. I will at some time do the South rim thing.

Put it on the list for another time and enjoy LV.

Congratulations by the way.

I guess I'll chime in too, disagreeing with the other posters. We are not big hikers, and not very outdoorsy either. In addition, we have been to Vegas a few times so already saw most of the Vegas sites. Therefore we decided to devote one day of our Vegas vacation to a helicopter tour to the Grand Canyon about 2 years ago. It was amazing.

The tour that we took touched down on the canyon floor long enough to have a glass of champagne and a croissant. It was a surreal experience to be walking in the GC, even if we were not in the deepest part. Also, the helicopter flight itself was amazing.

Since you will be in Vegas with kids, I assume the majority of your time cannot be spent in the casino, so why not take the whole family to the Grand Canyon in a helicopter? Your kids will never forget it.

My only concern is that it is a very long day. I think we got picked up at 4:30 am. If you decide against the GC, you might consider a helicopter ride over the strip at dusk as a shorter alternative.

Happy travels and congratulations on your upcoming Vegas wedding.
