What to do and where to stay with kids in Las Vegas

We are thinking of taking our 8 & 11 year olds to Las Vegas for a couple of days? What would be some fun things to do with them & where would you recommend we stay. Not interested in Circus Circus.

Hi

Before you get inundated with replies saying that kids should'nt be taken to LV - her is a positive reply.

We stayed at the MGM in July last year with our 8 year old son and he loved the hotel mainly because of the great pools. We walked the strip and saw the Bellagio Fountain show and waited for the Pirate show at Treasure Island however it was cancelled due to a storm.

We went to Hoover Dam and Red Rock Canyon, and Hoover Dam was a highlight of our stay.

We went into a few casinos, Paris, Ceasars Palace, NYNY and Planet Hollywood and he thought they were all fun.

The pirate show is no longer. It is now a Siren show that is supposed to appeal to an older male audience, not kids.

There is a sticky at the top of the forum with 125 things to do.

I'll be there in April with my 12 year old son. I didnt think you could go into casinos with a youngster (like in Aust??) but have read something else about a child can go in as long as they dont play??? is that right??? My son would certainly be interested in seeing inside one of the Las Vegas actual casino area, i reckon so he could just tell his mates !!!

He is also looking forward to the big M&M shop.

If you're under 21 you are only allowed in gaming areas if you're moving through in order to get from Point A to Point B. If you stop and "loiter" at any stage you'll be breaking the law and will be asked to move by security.

Not sure but maybe Excalibur Hotel would be a good choice. I think they still cater to families. Plus there are some good fast food choices across the street in NY NY Hotel.

My older kids are 9 and 11. I always stay at non-smoking, non-casino properties with my kids, but if you want to stay in a big casino hotel, I think Excalibur is fine with kids that age. They are the perfect age for the Tournament of Kings show, and there is an arcade in the basement. If you want a nicer hotel, you may want to look at Mandalay Bay. A great pool if you'll be there during pool season, and connected to Excalibur by tram.

Also, although these won't all apply to you based on the age of your children (they mostly apply to younger children), here are Law_Girl's Rules for Taking Your Kids to Vegas:

1) Don't try and pretend Vegas is the perfect family vacation spot. I consider it a compromise - my kids enjoy it, and so do I.

2) Kids are not allowed in the casinos EVER. You may walk through and stay on the outlined path, but you can not pause even briefly near the gaming. I learned that you can’t even stop by a Player’s Club booth with a child.

3) Travel with a nanny/au pair/babysitter. If you think you can’t afford it, then rethink your travel plans and figure whether you can downgrade on lodging or meals to cover the cost. Consider whether you have a trusted cousin, niece, neighbor, friend’s teen, etc…that might be perfectly happy to babysit in exchange for an all expense paid trip to Vegas. I travel with an au pair, and wouldn't consider going without childcare so that I can enjoy Vegas after the kids go to bed.

4) Stay off the Strip at a non-casino property. I prefer Signature or TheHotel, but if you’re on a tight budget, Desert Rose works, too. Vegas is overstimulating for anyone – staying at a non-casino property allows you to get away from the chaos of the Strip and means you don’t have to walk through the casino every time you come and go.

5) Go at your child’s pace. If your child needs a nap/break, by all means give them that nap/break. Don’t drag a tired child up and down the Strip because YOU want to see the Venetian. Relax, take it slow, don’t push a child to see and do more than they can handle. Cranky children in Vegas are a nightmare for everyone.

6) Enforce bedtime. My kids go to bed at 8pm. That applies on vacation in Vegas as well. I’m always shocked when I see people pushing an exhausted child through a casino at midnight. Would you let your child be up that late at home? Then why would you do it in Vegas?

7) Be prepared for the adult nature of Vegas. Yes, your children will see pictures of naked women. That is almost unavoidable, and it is worth discussing with your children in an age appropriate manner before you leave.

Have a wonderful trip! Vegas is fine with kids as long as you're prepared for what it is and isn't in a vacation spot. :-)

They might enjoy the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay. A good kids show would be Mac King at Harrah's.

We have always enjoyed the Spearmint Rhino and this last trip took our first tour of Glitter Gulch. I'm sure I kids would have remembered it. Enjoy!!

It is true that in Australian casinos children are not allowed in the door but in Vegas it is often required to walk through a casino to get to restaurants and lifts to your hotel rooms.

Children are allowed to follow the path through the casino floor to get to where they need to go (accompanied by an adult of course) but they cannot stop or even pause near any tables, cash booths, member club booths or machines.

I first visited Las Vegas as a 12 year old and when we stayed at Circus Circus and walked through the casino to the hotel lifts. I thought it was the most exciting thing I had ever seen (strangely enough, I am not a gambler now but still love the sounds and atmosphere in a casino)
