1st timer to Vegas on a Budget, where to stay????

I know there've been several questions similar to this posted recently but wanted to get mine out here too..... My wife and I are starting to plan a trip in Mid May for our anniversary. We are on a budget, so not looking for top of the line, but something nice and clean and really just a place to sleep and shower. Prefer something close enough to walk or take mono rail. Been looking at Stratosphere, Imperial Palace, Sahara, among a few others more expensive, any input would be great!

The Sahara is right on the monorail. We stayed there a couple of years ago. It's clean and the service was good, but it is older and the casino is way smokier than normal (if that bothers you). With both the Sahara and the Stratosphere, you are at the very end of the strip....far away from all the mid-strip action, but that can be a plus or a minus. On the plus side, if you are going on a budget, the fun at that end of the strip can be a little cheaper. We enjoyed casino hopping from the Sahara, Stratosphere, Riviera, etc. and having a little "low roller fun". On the minus, if you want to do more mid-strip things, you have to get there...but the monorail is right there.

IP is a great location, but I've never stayed there. We actually booked it, but switched to the Sahara because we got a better rate.

If you are just looking for a place to sleep and shower, it will work. I liked the "old-school Vegas" vibe you get there that you don't get from the newer places!

What would you say your budget is?

Neither Stratosphere nor Sahara are very close to the most popular resorts and attractions. You would be making up your hotel savings in transit costs. Imperial Palace is more central would fit the bill as a "sleep and shower" place. So would Casino Royale and Bill's Gamblin' Hall. In fact, I (and many other reviewers here) would recommend Bill's as the best of the budget options. For a touch of "Vegas flash', consider upgrading to the Flamingo or Luxor.

I forgot to add this to my original post...If this is your first trip to Vegas, I'd recommend getting closer to mid-Strip. Bill's has some pretty sweet rates, and you would get access to the Flamingo pool, which is a huge plus.

We are planning on celebrating our 10th anniversary there this summer, and we're looking at the Flamingo. There are some pretty great rates for it, as well.

Hi,

I suggest you focus on the hotels between Harrahs- Ballys and a good guide is the site below to the various pros and cons of the hotels and locations....

To be honest, i have not stayed at most of them, but have been in and all will treat you well, I would thing that Flamingo and Ballys would be the "higher scale" of the collection.

I agree, the Strat and Sahara are too far north on the strip and I would agree the hotels between the IP and Bally would suit you best both for location and price. The monorail can get very expensive if you use it much at all.

Just avoid Circus Circus which is cheap for a reason - cheap and nasty. I had problems during my stay at IP (blood-stained sheets, peeling chrome in dirty bath and dirty sink etc) but others haven't.

Strat is not in a good location and, for a first visit, I wouldn't recommend Sahara because, whilst the monorail is handy, you really just want to walk out and have everything nearby.

Flamingo and Harrah's are fine. I haven't stayed at Bill's or Bally's but they are also central budget options. Bally's has a fun vibe to it these days and connects to the lovely Paris.

What is your budget? Also, are you flexible at all? I know mid-May for your anniversary but sometimes only a week either way can make a difference. Also, if you can avoid weekends if possible since prices can double.

For a first timer I would avoid most of the hotels you listed just because of the location. I would shoot for cental Strip as much as possible. Imperial Palace would meet your needs. There are some other places you might be able to do close to your price or for just a little more that would be a better choice. Look at Bills, Flamingo, Balley's. A little further down but still good location...Excalibur, NYNY, Monte Carlo

Go to the hotels website and look at the calendar in the reservation area. That will give you a great overview of prices which is great for looking for those cheaper days

Look out for deals on smartervegas.com too. Deals for May should be coming out soon.

If you can avoid staying on Friday or Saturday nights you will be able to stay in a much nicer place for less money. And in May the quality of hotel and ameneties makes a big difference in your Las Vegas experience.

maybe Monte Carlo - we stayed there and I have seen rooms around $50 lately (not sure about May). It is connected to the Bellagio by free tram. I enjoyed it very much - a beautiful hotel from the outside, nice rooms, good pool area, very nice buffet. I would highly recommend it.
