september trip on a budget

hello we have booked to go to vegas in september, we are looking at staying downtown, which hotels are the best value for money and doesnyone know roughly how much per night we will have to pay, ideally we do not wish to pay more than $50 a night ,but want the best room available for that price or even cheaper.

Also is there a site which gives you prices for a certain month in previous years.

thanks

A lot depends upon what you're looking for out of a hotel. If it's just a place to sleep and shower then there's no shortage of options Downtown, certainly for Sunday through Thursday, that fit into your budget. If you want something a little nicer then lots of people will say that Golden Nugget (easily the best Downtown hotel) offers the best value even though it may have rates that are double those of its neighbors. You may even find promo rates of $50 or so at the GN, but not at weekend.

Historical rates aren't of that much use as supply and demand may have been different in previous years but September is generally a good month for lower rates, especially if you avoid Labor Day (first Monday of the month) weekend.

Do you really want to stay Downtown as some areas look a bit rough? We have stayed at the Desert Rose Resort just off the strip where you actually get a suite of rooms including a fully fitted kitchen and lounge, seperate bedroom and bathroom and I think we paid about the £45 mark a couple of years ago and that was in September. Had a quick look at the website today out of interest and it was £50 per night midweek which was good as it includes breakfast and an evening managers reception. Have a look at the website just put in Desert Rose Resort Las Vegas.

Many people chose to stay downtown, if they dont wish to pay taxis and hire a car then downtown is a better option as everything is on their doorstep. If they were to stay off strip at desert rose then transfers would be an issue and would add to their cost.

$50.00 or less is very doable, though Friday and Saturday may run a bit more.

Fitzgeralds is coming up at $34.00 weekdays and $59.00 Fri - Sat

Main Street Station in Aug is at $31.00 weekdays and $39.00 Fri-Sat

Wait a bit before booking and make sure your reservation is changeable.

The two places NOT to book would be the Plaza and the Las Vegas Club - those rooms have not been updated in YEARS.

I think we must be talking at cross purposes! Desert Rose is only a few minutes walk from the Strip , it's right behind Hooters and the MGM is just across the road. It's easy to get anywhere from there. There are buses running up and down the strip which seem pretty popular so without a car on a strict budget should'nt be too much off a problem transport wise. I must say that we have had meals in the Victorian conservatory buffet at Main Street Station which were fine and thought the hotel itself inside was quite nice. Not my choice of area to stay but it's all personal choice when it comes down to it. I would do an awfull lot more research before booking and September prices after Labor Day are always reasonable.

I've stayed at 7 downtown properties but I always lean towards the Four Queens for many reasons. I like the rooms there, the gambling, the drink service and 2 of the restaurants, Magnolias and Chicago Brewing Co. You can find rooms as low a $25 and weekends at $59 ro $69 depending on the time of year or if the hotel needs to fill the rooms. It's too early to get what the true rates will be but you can always reserve and change them as needed. I also like the Fremont but their rooms aren't usually as cheap as the Queens plus they are a little smaller and dont' have in room coffee makers.

Of course, the Golden Gate is the most luxurious but it will also costs you more. My personal opinion is to stay away from the Plaza and the Vegas Club.

We have stayed downtown on our past 3 trips. The Golden Nugget and Four Queens were both great, but Vegas Club was just plain gross! I would probably lean towards Golden Nugget just because of the pool, especially in September.

We always stay at Fitzgerald's. Once you gamble there, you will get comp offers all the time. I like downtown and do not think it is rough. My mother and I walk around all hours of the night and don't have a problem. You have to be aware of your surroundings, just like on the strip, but there is security everywhere.

You might want to look into getting the American Casino Guide and/or the Las Vegas Advisor coupon book. There are a lot of coupons for buy one get one free meals downtown. I usually get both books and every meal we eat we use the coupons. You can also go on to the Fremont Experience website and download coupons right before you go.

thanks for all your replies, we have been to vegas 2 times and we love the cheap gambling downtown, we were thinking of the el cortez just because of the reviews on here, now I think we will take a look at the four queens too.
