Few questions for second time visit to Vegas

Hi all,

This is my second time to Vegas in four months but this time we are doing things a little different, i.e. funds are a little less plentiful!!! We’re flying in on the 19th Feb for 4 days.

Anyways I have a few questions that I hope you guys can help me with…

1. Weather – we’re be there from 19-22 Feb. What kind of weather can we expect? Is it very cold at night time? Last time we were there was in October and the weather was really nice, a light jacket/cardigan was all we needed at night.

2. We are staying in the Stratosphere and wondered if the $20 room upgrade trick works here and if so what type of upgrade should we look for? We stayed in Caesars last time and it worked a treat.

3. We are thinking of paying a visit to The Gun Store on Tropicana. I’ve read a few reports here but wondering if it really lives up to the hype. Neither of us has ever fired a gun and think it would be a fun experience to try it out. Any views??

4. What other things would ye recommend as must do’s? The last time we were there we visited all the major hotels and casinos, except the Rio and Palms and we hope to do that this time.

5. Good steakhouse, b/f loves steak and I’ve read a few reviews but wondered what is the best…don’t mind paying a little over the odds if the food is worth it.

6. The “top of the world” restaurant – is it worth a visit? The reviews are mixed on this and many say to avoid it and just go for a drink in the bar there.

Anyways I’d be glad to read any comments on any of the above and no doubt I’ll be on again with more questions before we go.

Thanks in advance,

C

1. Here was the weather for that date last year, and historical weather info for that date from past years: wunderground.com/history/…

2. Might as well give it a try - worst that happens is that they give the $20 back and not upgrade you. Also, my condolences on staying at the Stratosphere, especially after you've stayed at an awesome place like Caesars.

4. Don't bother with Rio and Palms unless you have specific things you want to do there.

Have fun!

1. try weatherunderground.com.

http://www.wunderground.com/travel/index.asp

It will give you historical temps for the dates you enter

2. Hard to say, you can try

3. I really enjoyed it although it can get expensive. They have some package deals which were cool (included: Firing 3 different guns, ammo, targets, and a t-shirt). Go as early as possible. The place is small and can fill up quick. We went at 10am and it wasn't bad at all

4. You visited most of the hotels so since you are close to Downtown I would suggest trying that out. Much different than the Strip

5. Do a search on the forum. You will find many responses

6. Read the reviews. Haven't experienced it but my guess is if the reviews are so-so that is probably a good expectation. Try a site like Yelp.com they have a lot of good restaurant reviews

Weather- it is hard to predict the weather so far in advance. Other people's experience at that time won't be much of a help to you since you may have different temps during your visit.

Average high- 64, but with a range from the 40s to the 80s. On the 22nd, 2004- the high was 50. On the 23rd, 2002 the high was....79! That is how much the temps can vary! If it is cloudy/windy- it can feel much cooler than the temps could indicate. Average low- 40s with a range from the 20s to the 50s. You are going to have to check a weather site just before leaving. However- the forecast can change while you are there so think layers. Bring tops -mostly long sleeves, a sweater and a lined jacket. This way you will be prepared for any kind of weather without having to bring a lot of different kinds of clothes.

There is always a discussion as to whether or not the $20 bribe worked or not. Many people get upgrades just by smiling and asking politely- then tipping afterwards. Many people swear by it, but since they didn't try it without showing the money there is no way of knowing if they would have gotten what they wanted without showing the money. It depends on how many rooms are avialable, how long you are staying and maybe which check-in person you are dealing with. You do realize that the Strat is at the very northern most part of the strip, don't you? It is away from the main parts of the strip.

I find it hard to believe that you were able to see everything in just one visit last time. Will you have a car? If so- you can visit some of the off strip casinos and attractions(or take the shuttles). Did you go to any of the shows? If not- I would recommend Mystere/Love for a Cirque show and Jersey Boys for a non-Crique show. You did not mention going downtown, so that would be something new to do at night. Most of CityCenter is now opened so be sure to visit all of the buildings- Mandarin Oriental, Aria, Vdara and Crystals. They also have a Chihuly Gallery and a Bronze Cirque Gallery which are very nice. There are scultures all over the area for you to seek out. I wasn't thrilled with parts of CCenter (expeically Aria and Crystals), but I do think everyone should see all parts of it and make up their own minds.

Prime is a great place for steaks.

I am not a big fan of TOW. The views are great, but I never felt the food lived up to the views. Nothing horrible about the food- just nothing special about it - the meals were just O.K. and nothing more. If you are going to pay for an expensive meal- I would go to Alize instead. The food is much, much better, the ambience and service are great and there is a view. I would only go TOW for a drink and the view- and eat elsewhere.
