Does anyone ever venture North?

I read and hear that North Vegas is a locals area geared toward cheap gaming, somewhat downbeat at best and unsafe at worst. I used to hear the same about downtown as well until I visited a few years ago and fell in love with the old Vegas feel. I truly think a trip to Vegas can be enhanced by visiting and/or staying in both Strip and downtown areas but what about the north?

I'd like to read some comments by those who have visited or frequent the North Vegas haunts, any gems up there or any bona fide warnings. I'm seeking facts rather than rumors. Can I get a witness?

I've gone North a bit with a friend of mine.... she drives.

I've been to the Silver Nugget, and that was an all right place. Also went to the Opera House, and I'd say avoid that one at all costs. Really not a nice place. Jerry's Nugget I understand is ok, Silverton is very nice, and both the Cannery and East Cannery I hear are good places.

I noticed that food for the most part was less expensive even, than Downtown, and they seemed to have better incentives for signing up for players cards. But they also did seem to be slanted more toward the locals, although everyone who comes is welcomed (Thats what I saw anyway)

Silverton is not North Vegas, although it is nice & Eastside Cannery is on Boulder Hwy (not north Vegas).

I believe I'm the person SS is talking about. Yes, avoid the Opera House. It's not worth anyone's time IMO. I've been back to the Silver Nugget a couple of times and enjoy playing bartop VP. We also ate at their diner which was not bad for the couple of dollars we paid for it.

Jerry's Nugget is the nicesest of all of them and the diner is pretty good also with friendly service. This casino is really geared towards the VP players so you'll be in VP heaven there.

Visited Poker Palace which is pretty small and not a very big selection of slots but another friend and myself played some $1 bj which was fun. I also had a steamed hotdog with all the fixings at their snack bar which was delicious and set me back a whole 50 cents! I will be going back to the PP.

Hi

Last year we visited the Rampart and the Cannery. Rampart was fairly smart, would never call that place rough. The Cannery was alright with some good cheap food options, clean but not "posh". Never felt unsafe at either place.

I assume you are talking about North on Las Vegas Blvd not about the entire city of North Las Vegas? Parts of NLV are the worst in the Las Vegas Valley the area I believe you are trying to refer to is bad crime ridden area and no locals I know hang out there but yes that area is locals. North LAs Vegas is a big and growing city and the new areas are nice neighborhoods. Aliante Station is in NLV and nowhere near the area that I think you are trying to discuss.

Agreed with S S and V V

Opera house is like the Gold Spike or Western back in the bad old days that I miss so much.

Silver Nugget , has a bowling alley and was far nicer.

Jerry's Nugget, with it's prime rib, is the best of all.

Note the 113 CAT bus out fo the DTC serves that area which includes the Lied Nature Museum, Cashman (Baseball) Field, the restored Mormom Fort , the Neon Museum and Boneyard and some busy homeless shelters..

I had no security issues but they may be some lurking.

We did a north run summer 2008.

Big Horn at 8AM on Monday my dad & DH refused to get out of the car...Mom & I said buck up (I wouldn't go at night...), but they treated us like royalty & my dad ended up loving it! (he liked that they would play blackjack slowly...he doesn't like the fast deals)

Cannery is quite nice & Santa Fe is gorgeous.

Rampart is dim, ugly & unfriendly. Too bad, the resort looks nice.

Thank you, GoodBeer. Yes, I meant north on Las Vegas Blvd from downtown but now you've intrigued me about the city of North LV. My thought was about taking the bus from the Downtown terminal up LVB and hopscotching some venues on the blvd to see if there are any worthwhile venues. I know little about either north las vegas blvd or the city of NLV. Since you seem well-versed on the subject and, considering what I have posed about riding the bus north, what do you suggest? Anyone who has done this please pipe in!

Downtown to Encore is less travelled--for a reason; typically old casinos w/ little reno (except Sahara). Strat...Sahara...Circus Circus...Slots of Fun...Riviera...BUT they do tend to have cheaper minimums...

I don't have time to look on mapquest right now, but it's Texas (or is it Santa Fe) Station just north of the downtown area...we've been to both but been a few years ago.
