Stay in Vegas or outside of Vegas

Arriving in Vegas in the afternoon. Want to do 2 nights stay - but not necessarily on the strip (we have a 9 yr old). Plan to drive to Hoover Dam the next day - might do the whole big tour or not - haven't decided yet. For the 2 nights we are there we just want to shop around, swim, and eat. Nothing too terribly fancy as my son is a picky eater. Should we stay in Vegas or outside like at Lowes Lake Las Vegas? We'll have a car so driving is not an issue. If I stay at Lowes Las Vegas will I find a McDonald's close by if we need one (not for me - the 9 yr old)?

if you want to stay off strip Id look at either Green VAlley Ranch which has shopping and restaurants at The District, as well as many fast food spots real close or Sunset Station which also has shopping, the galleria MAll across the street, a movie theatre and every fast food place you'd want right there including In N Out. Lake Las Vegas is pretty isolated.

According to recent posts, the Lake Las Vegas area is not only at a standstill from a development standpoint but also several shops and a hotel out there have closed.

Agree with GB that the GVR area would be a good option.

That's what I thought about Lake Las Vegas. How do I find hotels at Green Valley Ranch or Sunset Station - do I check for these under the Vegas heading?

Well I meant just check the major chains...like Choice Hotels, Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, etc. The sites usually have a map of the city, and GVR is east of the Las Vegas strip out in the Henderson area.

They are all classified as "off-strip" Vegas properties. It's a catch-all that includes nice properties like Green Valley Ranch, Red Rock Station, M Resort, South Point, along with many other places that cater to frugal travelers and locals. Many of them are more family friendly with arcades, movie theatres and bowling. A few even have drop-in child care.

Ok, I found both Green Valley Ranch and Sunset Station by checking Las Vegas Henderson area. They both look really nice and the reviews on both are pretty good. Does anyone like one over the other? I'm thinking my husband & son might like Sunset better because it has the Galleria across the street & in a review it mentioned a Walmart close by (for them not me).

Green Valley Ranch is an excellent property, much better than Sunset Station. However, the clientele is generally 20-30 somethings with parties high on their "to do" list.

Stay at the JW Marriott in Henderson.

You will find on this forum that people give you alot of incorrect info especially when it comes to anything not on the strip.

There is no JW Marriott in Henderson, it is all the way across the Valley from Henderson in Summerlin. While the JW MArriott is a great property it would add 45 minutes to your drive to the dam.

The areas that GVR and Sunset are in are very nice suburbs of Las Vegas (Green VAlley and Green Valley Ranch) within the city of Henderson.

GVR is much nicer than Sunset but that is not a knock on Sunset, its just that GVR is that nice. On the weekends the bars, and casino is a local night spot where there are alot of 20-30 somethings but there are also many people there of all ages all of the time, it should not keep you from choosing that property.

Sunset is also a good choice otherwise I wouldnt have mentioned it in my above post. You will pay less to stay at Sunset than GVR and there is the mall and gasp a place you'll never catch me in WalMart right there.

If cost plays no factor choose GVR, if cost is a factor then choose Susnet with no regrets.

Any other questions let me know, I lived in that area for many years ans when Im back in town each month or so that is the area I spend all of my time in.

Yes, GoodBeer, Summerlin, not Henderson for JWM. But the main point is that it is geared more towards a family stay than GVR is, and I have stayed at both.
