Any Riviera lovers out there...

I like looking through the different hotel traveler photos on TA just to get an idea of what rooms are like from the vacationer's stand point - rather than the brochure pics - and I stumbled upon the Riviera (R)...

Does anyone here still visit or stay at the Riviera? I've read it'll be the next property to go (that or CC) and just wondered if anyone considers the R home. I would imagine a slot person would be able to find their fill of vintage machines? And at one point the R was a pretty happenin' place with it's neon featured in almost every Vegas-y movie... so just wondering how or if people even consider the R a good place anymore or if it's a must on people's places to visit when in town...

I'm a Riviera lover because of the history of the place and the fact that Casino, one of the greatest movies of all time, was filmed there. The remodeled rooms (stayed in the Monaco tower) are nice and clean albeit small (250 sq feet). Slots there, like everywhere else, are as tight as a drum. The check in counter features kiosks, which are very impersonal, but if you're lucky you'll get a real person to help you. Slots O Fun and Circus Circus are right across the street, and the Sahara is a 5 minute walk north, but other than that it's pretty bleak in that area.

Actually, not scary at all. I stayed at the Riviera back in August of 2009 and had a great, clean room with a king bed and nice bath. Only drawback was it was a bit of a walk from the street to the elevators and then to the room. I wouldn't hesitate to go back again.

Where else would they let a packed craps table sing to the rafters?

They just don't let that kind of fun rip at most joints on the Strip.

As for staying there, it remains high on my to do list.

I love the CASINO angle also.

As others have indicated, the rooms are actually fine. But...

The Riv is definitely on a downward slide. The ownership (Riviera Holdings Corp) was in technical default last March, delisted from Amex in June, shows and restaurants have shut down, even the buffet is only open for breakfast and lunch. As of last Nov. they were still trying to avoid Chapter 11.

With that section of the strip basically a wasteland of unfinished projects and empty lots, there's no real reason to stay there.

It you are going to stay there (or even just visit), be sure to stop in at the Fireside Lounge at the Peppemill. Cool/funky/retro/unique:

Yes there are still a few of us out there, Some of the rooms are fine,

Monaco tower is all non smoking & remodelled rooms - plasma T.V etc. We stayed twice last year in the Monte carlo tower,as we are both smokers huge rooms & bigger bathrooms.

The Buffet has always been dreadful, but Kady's coffe shop is open 24 hours.

Sorry cut of half way through.!!

Cont.

Casino has great old slots & new ones, Atmosphere is great, gamblers seem much friendlier, & C.W speedy service.

But with Stardust, Westwood Ho & Frontier all gone,it is in a wasteland now as another poster mentioned,.

Good value for money, & very generous with comps if you are a gambler.

Have a good trip wherever you decide to stay.

I haven't stayed there, but I have to give the bartendercredit. My husband and I were walking back to the strip from Sahara and I got very ill. I was lightheaded and it was extremely hot out. We stopped at the Riv so I could get some AC and ice water. The bartenders were extremely nice to me and were genuinely worried about me until my color returned and I felt better.

So many times the casino staff are really grumpy, but the Riv staff was very nice to me, and not in a fake way, either...
