TR Mar 20-22, Four Seasons, Verandah, Prime, Beer Pong M&G

For me, this was somewhat of a randomly scheduled trip for no particular reason. I originally planned to go solo and join up throughout the weekend with fellow TAer NYGus and a girlfriend I hadn't seen in years who both had plans to be there at the same time. Another girlfriend was supposed to join me as well, but she backed out on the trip about six hours before our flight was scheduled to depart. So, I guess it was sort of a solo trip…but not really since I had plans to see people while I was there.

I get to Vegas about three or four times a year, sometimes with my kids (ages 11, 9 and 3) and their au pair in tow, sometimes with friends minus the kids. I try to balance the two. In December, I had the kids with me, so this was a much needed, without kids, trip from March 20 to March 22.

I'll post as replies throughout the day as my schedule allows - hopefully will have it all up this morning sometime.

As seems to be a pattern for me, once again I left Colorado in the middle of a winter storm. My flight was on time, and I arrived at Four Seasons about 8:30am. Due to my girlfriend cancelling late the night before, I was hoping to change from the previously booked room with two doubles to a single king room. While making this request, I explained to the very nice front desk guy that my “Girls’ Trip” had unexpectedly turned in to a solo trip, but that I was planning to just make the best of it and enjoy my time in Vegas (insert “poor little me” look) – then asked very nicely if he had any complimentary upgrades available – and found myself upgraded from a standard room to a Strip view deluxe. Not a bad start to the trip.

Four Seasons: Usually I stay at Signature if I’m traveling with my kids and the au pair since we can get two junior suites and spread out. If I’m by myself, I really love TheHotel, but this time, I thought I’d try FS. I’m glad I stayed there, but to be fully honest, I’ll probably go back to TH for future solo trips. If you’re looking for full on serenity and relaxation, FS is the place, but that’s not really why I go to Vegas. On the other hand, I don’t especially like to stay at a casino property, so I like TheHotel which is all suite/non-casino but has a better vibe, IMO. To compare the two – the room at FS made me want to sit and have a nice glass of wine while reading a good book…the room at TheHotel makes me want to invite friends over and throw a martini party. TheHotel just has more of a funky, hipster vibe, the FS makes me feel like I have to whisper a lot.

The rooms at FS are lovely, and the service is so good it borders on creepy – three times a day someone was in my room doing something while I wasn’t there. I’m not that messy…I don’t need that much cleaning. Pluses – the bed was probably the most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept in, and the pool was great for relaxing/napping in the afternoon. Minuses – hated the layout of the furniture and actually considered asking them to come up and rearrange the desk and the chair. Also, the robes were awful. I love a big, soft, fluffy hotel bathrobe – these didn’t fit the bill. Also considered asking to have a different robe sent up, but I was really working on being low maintenance on this trip, so it seemed I should start that little undertaking at the hotel.

After arriving in my room, I let NYGus know that I had arrived, so he could come meet me for brunch. We hadn’t seen each other since meeting at an October M&G and spending time together then, but we’ve been in touch via email/text/cell consistently – so I was totally excited to see him again. He took the Deuce (insert eye rolling, I’m not a big fan of the Deuce) down from Mirage where he was staying, and we headed to brunch at Verandah. Getting caught up was fun, and we picked up right where we’d left off five months previously.

Verandah: This was a last minute switch out from our originally planned brunch at Country Club. The switch was done so I didn’t have to schlep all the way to Wynn right after arriving. I’m glad we made the switch, because this was an excellent brunch. The tiny little donuts by themselves made it worthwhile, but all of the food was very, very good, as is the atmosphere and the service. Nice, upscale, but comfortable and relaxed as well. Food ranged from a cold bar of yogurts, fruits and cheeses to a hot bar of standard breakfast food, plus made to order omelets and the previously mentioned donuts.

After brunch, we walked back out towards Mandalay and said goodbyes. From there, I went back up to my room, but then decided to walk down and grab a bottle of wine at the little convenience store in MB. I usually do this because it annoys me to have to pay the huge upcharges to have wine delivered to my room. Maybe that’s stupid – if you’re paying for a 5 star hotel, you should pay for the overpriced wine, right? Meh…no reason for that…so I went to buy wine. I received a text from msavard who was staying in Mandalay, and was hanging out in the hotel. So, while down at the casino grabbing wine, I met him for a quick drink at Eye Candy and we watched some basketball and chatted a bit.

Coming up...the much anticipated March Madness/Beer Pong M&G....

Great start! We're going to the Verandah brunch this Sunday so I'm very excited to hear another review of it. Was it warm enough for you to sit outside?

The few times I've taken solo trips I've actually requested a 2-bedded room (if they had them and didn't mind giving one to a solo) - I love having the extra horizontal surface to lay out my clothes, pile stuff, etc. (I guess I must be messier than you :(

Looking forward to reading about the food and your adventures. I also love Verandah, it's so stylish but also relaxing and they put a heater over my table so I could eat outside in November - so different to wet, miserable home!

Meet & Greet:

I had big plans to take a pre-M&G nap, but never got around to it, so about 2:30pm, I headed towards Planet Hollywood for the scheduled March Madness M&G. Once there, I found my friend T who was in town with her dad, then met up with NYGus, VegasGatorFan and msavard. After not long, we also found mike38 and qui923.

I think to start I need to say that I absolutely love M&Gs. I’ve met some great friends on TA, and it is always fun to get together will fellow travelers. If you’ve never been to a M&G, I highly recommend it. This one didn’t disappoint – we had such a fun group of people, and I’m so glad that I got to meet everyone.

We had a bit of a wait to get a beer pong table, but once we did, the fun started immediately. I’d never played beer pong, so this was a totally new experience for me, and so far out of my comfort zone, I can’t even describe it. Plus, I don’t like beer…and I was being asked to drink A LOT of beer. I understand this is reflective of how bad my beer pong skills are, but hey, it was my first time.

As a beer pong virgin, I have to say that the thing that shocked me the most was how completely gross the whole thing is. For anyone who hasn’t played, the entire concept is to throw a ping pong ball across a table in to a plastic cup of beer. But 90% of the time, the ball ends up on the floor, and then you’re supposed to dip it in to a cup of water to “clean” it. Because that lukewarm tap water really helped get the nasty floor scum off the ball, I’m sure. At one point GatorFan pointed out that the water we were dipping the balls in was probably even nastier than the floor itself. Maybe in some places this isn’t as bad as others, but Blondie’s doesn’t seem to pride itself on cleanliness. Of course, it was March Madness during the games, so the place was packed, and the beer pong area was wall to wall tables of people all doing the same thing, passing ping pong balls around, dipping them in each other’s water…you get the picture. I’m not a freaky germ person or anything, but this was gross. It’s probably good I had so much beer…I stopped thinking about the germs after awhile…

We rotated around teams, and played for a couple hours until I started whining about getting a mojito at Rhumbar. After all, they all owed it to me after all the beer drinking I’d suffered through. ;-)

From Blondie’s, we walked down to Mirage and Rhumbar. NYGus had promised everyone that I would whine the entire walk, and I’m pretty sure I didn’t disappoint. I’m not a walker, and the whole Vegas thing of walking so much doesn’t please me. We got a round of mojitos at Rhumbar, and after staying there for awhile decided we could all use some food. Since it was close, we walked down to BLT Burger.

BLT Burger: I often recommend BLT Burger to people looking for a good, but affordable meal. Casual environment, family friendly, affordable…and in my opinion, the best burgers in Vegas.

By the time we finished dinner, I was definitely hitting a wall. I’d been up since 3am, barely slept the night before, been traveling, had mimosas, margaritas, wine, an insane amount of bad beer, and a small percentage of my mojito…then more beer…so I was done. About 10:30pm, I called it a night and grabbed a taxi back to FS. That super comfy bed was calling my name, and it did not disappoint me.

Coming up: Day 2, Simon, Prime

We did sit outside, and it was absolutely beautiful. They had heaters, although we didn't have one at our table, and we were fine without it. I was in a tank top, and the temp was about 65 degrees, maybe?

Don't miss the donuts. Have several - at least one of each kind. The eggs benedict was also one of the best I've had.

More TR! As always a good read, law_girl.

I agree, beer pong is gross. But sometimes gross can be very entertaining...LOL

Quite the contradiction. Beer Pong and Four Seasons. Can't say I have seen them in the same trip report before.

Turns out I'm more of a FS girl then I am a beer pong girl. But I really did give it a try...and actually managed to win a game with the help of one of GatorFan's friends. If only I could have talked them in to wine pong, instead....
