Reviews and how much influence they should have

I called up some reviews on several places I had considered staying. I was leaning towards Harrah's. My wife read the reviews and her first comment was "I sure don't want to stay at Harrah's". Now I don't know what to do. Any place my wife might think the reviews are accepatable and we can afford?

Don't know a thing about Harrah's but I second Orleans. GREAT reviews and great prices not only on the room but on drinks and food! Plus the shuttle is great for trips to the strip.

I didn't really do a good job on the original post. I called up the reviews of several properties. I included everything from Circus Circus to Wynn. She said she didn't think any of them were the place to stay based on the reviews.

It seems like any property in Vegas gets a share of negative reviews. I guess what I am wondering is how to sort the whiners from the legitimate complaints.

One thing to try is the overall ratings by the TA community. Everyone could have a really bad experience at any place depending on a rare confluence of events. However, maybe you could show her that on average people are pleased with any given hotel.

If you bring up the hotels one by one, you can see a preponderance of scores such as 4 star or 5 star, etc. Everyone has a bad day and you could be unlucky but also lucky with a much better than typical stay. By the way, if she reads a lot of articles about symptoms does she think she has a lot of new diseases? Just wondering.

What I do is remove all of the glowing reviews, and remove all of the worst reviews and believe the middle : ) What I do for us is to pick a hotel that is 'recommended' by at least 80% of the people on TA. I also prefer that a hotel have 4 circles on TA. as an 'overall' score.

I think you really have to set your own criteria. Others are willing to stay at lower rated hotels and others don't even read TA and just pick whatever is cheap like Circus Circus. LOL!

I don't think I'd like Harrah's myself but I'm not saying it's a bad hotel- it's just not the hotel for us. Also you have to take into account budget, location, likes, dislikes...

For example- the signature is ranked VERY high and yet lots of gamblers HATE it and would never stay there. WHY? B/c it doesn't have a casino. It's all about priorities. If TA says that a hotel is top notch- that might not work for you. You have to decide what your budget is and what you want in your hotel and then go from there.

I pay close attention if it is a regular poster here and send a PM if I have specific questions about something in the review. If it is a poster I am not familiar with and if the person doesn't have many posts, I am not very trusting sometimes. There are legitimate complaints too, but we usually hear about problems at a property from posters here when there are problems with the properties.

Topeka that is a valid point. CRACKS me up when a brand new poster with no comments and no reviews slanders a hotel UP and DOWN. I read those, LOL and move on.
