Change Booking To Downtown Hotel?

We are counting down the days to our trip to Vegas next month. We are booked into the MGM for 7 nights. Having missed out on the whole downtown thing last time I was thinking about booking into a hotel Downtown for a couple of nights. Is it worth it or sould we stay where we are and get a cab or a bus back to the Strip?

I would recommend just spending a night Downtown this trip. It isn't for everyone, especially during the daytime. Then next trip if you think you would enjoy it you can split your trip.

If this is your 1st trip downtown you may want to go down for a day and check it out. We like downtown. Every trip we split the time between the strip and downtown. Main Street Station is our favorite for all casino / hotels. It is a beautiful place with a great atmosphere. The rooms are big and comfortable. The casino is laid back, friendly, and great service. They also have a micro brew with superb beer. There is not much to do downtown during the day except gamble. At night there is a lot of action. If you like to gamble give it a shot. The slots are a little looser and table limits are much lower and the rooms are cheaper. I hope this helps.

Downtown is not for everyone. I would just go down for a day the first time to see if you like it.

It kind of depends on what you like to do. If you tend to spend your time gambling, then DT is great. If you are more the "see-the-sights" and clubbing types, then the strip is more like it. I would personally do 5/2, especially since DT usually has better week-end rates. Many more value food options there too. Take a look at the Golden Nugget for the nicest place to stay DT.

"Downtown is not for everyone." - And the point is...???

Do it. Downtown might be for you. You're spending 7 nights in Las Vegas and have stated you "missed out on the whole downtown thing last time," so you're already curious. Don't miss it this time. Experience downtown for yourself - no need or use in living vicariously. You only live once. When you get back, tell us all about your trip.

Just outside of MGM to the right is a deuce/ace bus stop, $7 for 24 hour pass. It will take you downtown, and to many other places. Downside is that it takes a while to get there and back. Also next to the MGM is another bus with open seating on top $35 for a 48 hour pass, it also makes many stops. I would recommend checking out DT before staying there. Some love it, some don't. Again, it also depends on what you like to do in Vegas, not much to do DT during the day except gamble, but it is a blast at night. I have stayed at Golden Nugget and Fitzgeralds numerous times each. GN is the best, and Fitz not bad at all for the price. Have fun. I just got home from staying a week at the MGM.

Just curious about those who advocate checking something out before one stays - how did they "check out" Las Vegas before their first visits? Las Vegas isn't for everyone.

No place is for everyone.

Good point. My first time ever in Vegas was on the strip. I went DT for a day trip to see what it was like and fell in love. I stay there probablly as often as I do the strip. It is more down to earth there, and historic, which I love.

If you have seven nights in Vegas, I would spend at least one night downtown, probably at the end of my trip. Visiting for an evening is a fine strategy but to fully enjoy it and get a good sense of the area takes an overnight.

I enjoy winding down from my Vegas trip downtown before I hit the plane home. To me, it's much more relaxing than the strip because things are in closer proximity to each other with a less pretentious, more interactive crowd.

Probably the best transition from the strip is a stay at the Golden Nugget, which is arguably the best property downtown overall. Other properties are certainly suitable depending on what you're after.

More people are including downtown in their Vegas itineraries for more than just a "drop-in" and increasingly using it as a base of operation as they have become less enamoured of the hype, hustle and higher prices on the strip. Many will travel to the strip and elsewhere then return to relax downtown. Certainly not the majority but more and more of those who have already "been there, done that".

Whatever avenue you choose, do plan to visit on your next Vegas trip.
