Whats the Rio like??

Thought i wasnt going to be able to go next week to LV due to my car breaking, so i cancelled reservations at Ballys. Today the heavens opened and i can go i can go!!!! But when i called to make reservations, my options were pretty limited. Ended up booking at the Rio, since it was the only one that had openings/and give me comped rooms for all 4 nights. Am familiar with all the center strip hotel/casinos. But have never even been to the Rio! Is it awful?? :)

When my husband and I were married three years ago, we brought 15 members of our family. My in laws wanted to stay at the Rio, it was their favorite.

Frankly, I could not have stayed there- but I am a non-smoker. The entire place smelled like an ashtray- even the non-smoking room they were staying in.

Other than that, the room was nice and big and it seemed clean.

most of the casinos smell like smoke as people are allowed to smoke in them lol...But I have been to their buffett and it is great!!!! I have also did a bit of gambling there and one a couple of hundred. My friend just came back and pics dictate that the rooms are HUGE there...BUT it is so far off the strip that you need to shuttle cab or rent a car, to get to the strip..We rent a car so not a problem but it is a long way to the strip..

They have a great all you can eat seafood buffet! Lobster, crab, oysters, etc, etc.

It's a decent property, mid-range. Nice rooms, I've never noticed my room smelling of smoke. Plenty of dining options on site and more at the nearby (walkable) Gold Coast and Palms.

It's not "awful" by any means. It can skew to a (very!) young crowd sometimes.

There is a free shuttle to and from the Strip, or you can catch a cab for probably less than $10. It's not "that" far off the Strip, some choose to walk it, a subject of debate here on the forum. (I don't recommend the walk)

Does the free shuttle run 24/7?? And is it few and far between? Worried about feeling "out of the loop" being at Rio. But its only 4 days until i go, my accommadations are pretty limited as far as comps go. So i suppose ill just see what Rio brings!!

I like the big nice rooms and mini-refrig at Rio.

The buffet is good, and convenient. I had a choice of Flamingo or Rio for comps next week, took Rio. There is certainly just as much smoke plaguing you in strip hotels.

Stock your rio refrig. with adult beverages from the gift shop at Gold Coast across the street. The prices are good.

The shuttle runs long enough. If you are at Ballys very late to catch the shuttle and find there are no more shuttles that night, it is a short trip by cab

The walk to mid-strip is under a mile, but you have to be careful and alert at the pedestrian crossings as you go over I-15

I've stayed at the Rio several times and have always had a decent, non smoke smelling room. My most recent stay at Rio was 11/09. I will be there on my upcoming trip in November. As others have stated you can take a free shuttle to the strip. I also like that is is near the Palms and Gold Coast.

I love the Rio. We have stayed there a few times and play there every trip. Shuttle hours are a little crappy for us. First one is at 10 or 10:30 am...not positive on the last one 1 am maybe? Our problem is the early morning thats when we hike it due to no shuttle ( 7:30 am). Palms and GC are great next door also. Personally I find it more laid back and relaxing at Rio, especially early in the day. Not as manic as the strip. Then again we are in the over 50 range now and like it better that way. If you are concerned about transportation how about a rental car? Rio is the best place to park and get in and out of.

Shuttle info:

lasvegasadvisor.com/…

But things sometimes change rapidly in Vegas- even shuttle service- so do check once you get there.

You can also take the Coast shuttle ( runs a loop Gold Coast/Oreans/Bill's)- it starts at 9 AM . Just cross Valley View to go between the Gold Coast and the Rio.

I wouldn't walk to/from the strip at night.
