Where will I be happy staying downtown?

My husband and I are going to Vegas 3/27-31/06. We are in our early 40's, not heavy into gambling, but we love Vegas, this is our 4th trip. We would really like to stay downtown this time. I agreed to go if we did it on a budget. I want our room and bathroom to be clean and well maintained. This is not our honeymoon, but it is our time alone without our 3 wonderful kids, so I would like a room that doesn't feel like a Super 8 or worse. I know, I want everything for nothing! *sigh*

I know I would like GN and we can stay for $98 a night that week which is good, but would I be ok with 4 Queens or the Plaza too?

Your opinions please...be kind! ;0) Thanks!

I've yet to stay at the GN but the 4 queens was ok it was a little small, the plaza was pretty good, the room I stayed in was very big and they were ok but the price was good for both of them i would have to say the Plaza was better than the 4 queens

It's a VACATION. GN at that price would be more enjoyable for you folks than ANY other hotel downtown for $25 a night.

I would NOT stay there the entire trip though. You might want to drive down to Laughlin for a couple nights. Golden Nugget, Flamingo and Harrahs are all nice places in Laughlin and cost about $30 a night. Thats right, Laughlin is CHEAP. Its also kinda fun since all the casinos are right on the Colorado River.

If you want to be pampered 4 star style for $98 bucks, stay at the Nugget. Nothing else downtown compares.

That said, I have stayed at Fitzgerald's many times with no complaints. It is a basic, clean Holiday Inn type hotel. It's the only other hotel downtown I would stay at, but it cannot hold a candle to GN.

I don't think I have to tell you what I suggest. :-)

My husband and I are in our late 40's and visit Vegas 2 - 3 times yearly. We are far too young in our opinion to be staying downtown. We by no means are partiers, drinkers or big time gamblers but just prefer to see the fast life and excitement of the strip. Frankly, I would be rather bored staying downtown. Check some of the hotels on the strip...who knows you might find something just as affordable. We usually do. Have a great time.

the Gold Nugget or The Fitzgerald are probably the better of the ones mentioned. Ive stayed at both.

Golden Nugget = 4 star

Fitz = 2 star

Fitz is much more like 4Queens, Binion's, and Fremont than GN. Just walk into all four and you will see what I mean.

You can't tell any difference between any of those EXCEPT GN, which is nicer than MOST strip hotels.

Has anyone stayed at Main Street Station or the California? I have stayed at neither but they appear to be cleaner and more well maintained than the non-GNs mentioned.
