If you don't know what "comps" are, why do you want to know how to get them?

Unless you are high rollers you are unlikely to be getting any comps on your first trip. "Comps" is short for "complimentary" and refers to free hotel nights, meals or other items that are taken off your bill ("comped"). In order to get comps you must sign up for a player's card and use the card when you gamble so that the casinos can track your play.

Most first-time visitors don't gamble enough to earn any comps for their first stay, but you can easily qualify for discount offers for your next visit to Las Vegas.

Comps are like prizes the casinos give you for playing their games. You can look on the Harrahs website, and it explains their Total Rewards system. That will give you a good idea. For example, Harrahs might offer you a dollar amount toward a meal based on the amount you've played--say at the slot machines. Or, they might send you an "offer" for a free hotel room for a couple or more nights based on the amount you've played at one or more of their casinos. If you play a whole lot, using a lot of money, you might get lots of offers. If you don't play too much or spend too much money, you might get some offers, too, but they won't be valued at as high a dollar amount. Have fun!

There are a couple different "flavors" of comps in my view;

1. Comps everyone gets: these include things like free drinks while gambling, free valet parking, etc.

2. Comps you earn from your gambling volume. Slots or table games, these are formulaic, based on "rebating" a certain percentage of the theoretical house win on your volume of play. These "points" can be redeemed for meals, etc, via the Player's Card system that tracks your play.

3. Offers for future visits, usually discounted or free rooms, food, show tickets, free slot machine play, etc. Sometimes there is no direct relationship to the amount of play on your last visit, so these can be somewhat of a wild card... So be sure to always use your Player's Card when playing so they can see what your action is.

RE: #2 & 3, the more you play the more generous your comps are, but it's never worth it to gamble more than you otherwise would just to get the comps; this is called "chasing comps," and most often ends up costing you more in gambling losses than you receive in the form of increased comps.

Play at the level you're comfortable at, take whatever comps that come your way, and enjoy your trip!

There will be a Player's Club desk in every hotel. The different resort chains have different names for them (eg Harrah's properties call it "Total Rewards").

Ask any employee on the casino floor where the Player's Club desk is and they'll direct you.

Also, you can use one card for all the properties in that family; one card for all the Harrah's properties, one for all the MGM Mirage properties, one for Venetian/Palazzo, one for Wynn/Encore, etc, so you don't need separate cards for Mandalay Bay, Luxor, NYNY, Bellagio, etc...

all the casinos will have a fairly prominent desk area where you can sign up for the Players card. Usually they will provide some free stuff when you sign up as well.

Just remember to insert the card in each machine when you play. (Oops, don't forget to take the card when you leave a machine)

If you are going to gamble a lot, try to stick to 1 casino group. Make sure you have a players card inserted at every machine and presented to the dealer at table games. Ask a pit boss or players club if you are due any comps. Even cheap places like Casino Royale will comp you a meal in Denny's for a few hours $5 BJ play.

My best advice is, don't be afraid to ask. Have a great time!
