Grand Canyon South Rim in January?

We want to see the Grand Canyon and will be in Las Vegas for a couple of days mid January.

Because we only have a short time there we do not want a tour that leaves very early morning and gets back late night.

Do any of you have any suggestions as to how we can have a great experience and see the best parts in perhaps a half day trip?

I have read that the South rim is the best scenic area so we would like to go there. My husband fancies a helicoptor experience. Do we need to take a flight from LV to somewhere else to start a tour?

There are so many companies and different options that I am now totally confused so any help will be very much appreciated!

Thank you.

There really isn't any way that you can visit South Rim taking just half a day out of your Vegas time. Even if you fly there from LV you're really looking at a full day. There are helicopter rides that you can take once you've arrived at South Rim but I can't personally advise on which companies operate these.

But if it's your first time in Vegas and you only have two days I would forget all about Grand Canyon. You won't have time to see anything close to all Vegas has to offer in that short amount of time. You really need to treat GC as a destination in its own right in order to fully appreciate it so wait until you have the time to do it justice by staying overnight at South Rim.

Agreeing with Blagger. You need to understand that the Grand Canyon is not just a side trip from LV. While there are plenty of ways to access the GCNP from LV, you really need a full day of your itinerary at a minimum.

If you only have 2 days in LV, save the GCNP for another time when you can give it the time it deserves.

I will agree with the previous two posters and will add that a helicopter ride (Or plane ride) over the Grand Canyon would really be your only sensible option due to your limited time and short days in January. I believe Papillon is one of the companies that does it.

I have the exact same problem the original poster has. We too will be in Las Vegas for 4 days in January, and we ALL want to see the Grand Canyon. All of us have been to Las Vegas before, with the exception of my husband. And we need to know what part of the Grand Canyon would be the best to go to. We had thought about the Skywalk. however, it seemed rather expensive, costing 2 different fees per person. One fee of 40.95 per person to the Grand Canyon West, or Legacy Pass, and then another fee of 29.95 to enter the skywalk it's self. We are not pressed for time, because this trip would be an all day Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon Trip, but can anyone recommend anything a little cheaper?

Tiffany, The Grand Canyon is really not a "day trip" kind of thing, especially not coming from Las Vegas, and even less combining it with the Hoover Dam during the short winter months.

The place to see the GC from is the South Rim and preferably you could spend a night or two max at one of the Rim Lodges.

IMO the best and least expensive way to see the Grand Canyon during your LV vacation is to rent a car and drive there. Read the Top Questions on the right side of the LV forum page to get all the information you need, and then some. Just be sure that you are heading to the GCNP at the South Rim

Then rent a car and go. The car and fuel can cost as little as $100. Park entry is $25 (for the entire car load). Take a picnic meal or two. Spend a night at one of the park lodges if you can get a room.

The park hotels book as much as a year in advance, but cancellations do happen so you might luck out. Park hotel rooms are priced from about $75-$300 depending on hotel, room type and time of year.
