Trip report - 10 COLD days in Vegas!

I'm going to start my trip report and post as replies. (I've been distracted by the New York forum since we've come back as my husband is bringing me there in Feb for my 30th, hence the delay! :-))

A few things - I'm super lazy when it comes to these things so, it might take a while. Also, please forgive spelling mistakes and typos. It might be long too... Hope you enjoy and don't find it too boring! Here goes...

1. Re: Trip report - 10 COLD days in Vegas!

After a fun Saturday getting a fake tan, packing and watching x factor, we finally woke up on Sunday the 21st of November at 4.30am. We had forgotten to put the immersion on so had pretty cold showers. Oh well, we were too excited to care! After a quick breakfast, my dad picked us up at 5.45. Dad's a taxi river and i asked him to drive us to the airport as we may as well give him the fare as anyone else. I know he feels funny bout taking the money off me tho. Tough!

I had asked him to pick us up a little earlier than was needed as i was afraid he would be late - he was early for once and not only that, but we got to the airport in super quick time!

Ah well, not to worry, there's bound to be a queue at security - NO! What?? So we have 2 hours in dublin airport til our flight to Heathrow where we would have a really horrible wait of almost 6 hours. The time passed surprisingly quickly and soon we were boarding our BMI flight to London. It was our first time flying with them and we were struck at the difference between them and Ryanair who we usually fly with - the organised way of boarding the plane, the free news paper, being allowed a handbag as well as a carryon bag (WOW!), comfy seats, a pocket in the seat in front of you for your free newspaper (double wow!).

No delays and by 9.30 we were in London. We had to ask the best way to get to T5 and the staff in Heathrow were very helpful. After a bit of a wait, we got the train over, got re ticketed so we could sit together (the lovely lady gave us 3 seats between us), breezed thru security and then had 4 and a half hour in T5.

2. Re: Trip report - 10 COLD days in Vegas!

I just remembered I never said who "we" are - Me (29) and my husband L, also 29. Sorry!

T5 is LOVELY! The nicest airport terminal we've been in. We mooched around the shops for a bit and bought a litre of Spiced Rum to get us thru the week - that was the plan anyway... We looked around at the menus in the vast array of restaurants and decided upon Wagamama, which was a good choice - cheap, good service and lovely food. Tasty and filling. L was super heathy and got a smoothie and I was bold and had a glass of wine - start as you mean to go on i say!

We then did a bit more exploring before sitting down for a bit. We didnt get to sit in one of those amazing huge red lip-shaped leather couches tho - they were all full of ppl sleeping! We went for another little drink in one of the pubs before getting a tram over to T5. The time passed really quickly which we were thrilled about!

When we got onto the BA plane and got ourselves organised with our supply of books, magazines, portable DVD player (God forbid we actually have to talk to each other!), we were delighted with our seats. They were next ot the bathroom which might bother some but we didnt care as our backs were to a wall so we could recline wothout feeling like we were imposing on other people. I really liked this as I always feel bad about relcining and never do it. The people sitting in front of us had no such issues however! Lol! We were also delighted to note we had Video on Demand so we had our choice of movies, tv shows etc. I didnt watch any movies, just comedy shows and a few other random things...

The food was fine, completely edible and the free drinks service was pretty good. (A couple more glasses of wine were had!)

I should mention that L had had a cold the few days previous to this so he was a bit miserable on the plane and just tried to take tablets to kill the cold ASAP! Still, he was pretty excited too. Also, not as much as me - I got tearful when we finally landed after 10 and a half hours on seeing the hotels in the distance. How silly! ;-)

We werent waiting long at all to get thru immigration in Vegas and our bags came out safe and sound. When we stepped outside, the cold hit us! I was prepared but I think L was convinced i was lying about the weather reports in Vegas as he really seemed shocked!

There was a bit of a wait for a taxi but we got one after about 15 mins. Our taxi driver was HORRIBLE! No hello or anything. Fine, but I stupidly decided not to mention the tunnel and the fact we didnt want to go thru it. I assumed he wouldnt take the tunnel as we were going to Vdara for our first 4 nights. WRONG!!! When I saw the signs for the tunnel, I said i didnt think this was the best way. He ignored me so I said again, I dont think we should go thru the tunnel. He was like, yeah this is the best way, you want to go the quickest way? I replied no, I want to go the cheapest way. This was 7pm on a Sunday - I knew the Strip would be fine. Of course at this stage it was too late to turn back wehich he had no intention of doing. I was fuming!

When we got to Vdara the fare was $26. Ridiculous! We got our cases out and then gave out to him, saying he had ripped us off, long hauling us. He knew it too cos he said pay me what you want then. L wanted to give him $15 but luckily for the taxi man, i had the money and I gave him $20. I know we might sound really petty giving out about a few dollars but he wasn't one bit nice and it was the principal of the thing. He wasnt happy about $20 either.

The whole incident upset me as I was freaked out we'd get him again during the holiday. L assured me we wouldnt - he was right! We checked in really quickly. Tried the $20 trick but no joy as we were staying more than one night, at least that's what we were told. Ah well, the room on the 42nd floor was still lovely. Lovely kitchenette, huge TV, AMAZING bed and pillows! (Sorry, only capitals will do). Lovely big bathroom with jacuzzi bath and big shower.

We unpacked quickly and had a quick shower. By this time it was about 8pm so wtill far ttoo early to sleep even though that's all we wanted to do! We went over to the Aria - a really quick walk, prob 3 mins from our hotel room. Nice casino but v quiet, no real atmosphere and we saw no cocktail waitresses! We went on to Monte Carlo for food as we just wanted something cheap. We both ate in the Mexican in the food court. It was tasty and for $16 between us, it did the job! We sat down at a machine (can't remember which one, poss WOZ) and got a beer. Lost about $30 and did a bit more wandering, looking at menus etc. At 10.30, we gave in to the sleep - we could hear the AMAZING bed calling us!

I can validate and verify that Nov 26 thru Dec 2 of that period in Vegas was colder than a well-diggers testicles...

End of November to December what temps did you expect? 80*? It' is cold in Vegas now. I am really curious. Did you plan on tanning by the pool like in Hawaii?

It was freezing in Arizona at that time too. One night got as cold as 28, and for someone in the desert, that is brutal. Enjoying your TR so far.
