Always rent a car in Vegas!

Just a Tip for those who have been around at least a couple of times and still haven't done it yet. We knew of this for some time but this trip we stretched it for the whole trip. Eat Off-Strip!

Using your Players Cards, Breakfast buffets average $7-8 at places such as South Point, Orleans, Main Street and Gold Coast and as low as $4.99 at Palace Station. C'mon, breakfast is your staples of eggs, sausage, bacon & home fries of some type anyway so why pay Twice that On the Strip? When you eat plenty in the AM, it's Nothing to coast through the day without feeling hungry again until the evening. Then Dinner is even better, we stumbled across Steak nights at 3 places with Gold Coast being the Lowest at $12.99. We know that Dinner buffets on the Strip usually Start in the $24 range so we saved a bundle then as well. Gold Coast also has a Promo for anyone over 50 on Mondays that All Buffets are 1/2 price!

We weren't going to rent a car this time but the same day we printed out our boarding passes last week, just for the heck of it I looked up the rates one more time on Carrentalsavers.com and found a rate from Alamo for just under $85 when they had beeen hovering in the $120+ range the whole week. We got the choice of "Anything in that row" on arrival at the RAC center and snagged a Corolla.

Suffice it to say that saving roughly $10 a meal for 10 meals for 2 people paid for the car and then some and we got around More even to the Cosmo on the 2nd day without walking. We even splurged by tipping a few bucks for the Valet Parking wherever we went so we didn't even have to bother parking the car ourselves.

It's the Only way to Go!

BBman, we like to rent a car for at least the last part of our trip. I don't like being a prisoner of the strip and having a car gives you a lot of freedom. Also, I think that Silverton has a $5 dinner buffet for seniors.

The only reason I do not like to rent a car in Vegas is because my husband and I like to drink. 2 cocktails is enough for me not to want to drive. I do sometimes rent a car for one day to go somewhere planned but do not usually even end up doing that.

I agree with your philosphy. We always enjoy renting a car while in LV, as I hate waiting for a bus, and hate even more walking everywhere especially when it is 100 degrees outside. The place we always drive to at least once is Ellis Island for their steak special and to Firefly for the famous tapas style food. We love South Point for gambling and inexpensive food, and occasionally drive over to Red Rock for the scenery. Once you get used to using the roads paralleling the strip, such as Koval and Paradise as well as the highway during non-rush hour, it is a piece of cake maneuvering through traffic. I even drove all by myself to Caesars for Qua Spa last trip.

Oh I so agree. Of course not if you're going to drink, that would be dumbness but renting a car in Vegas gives you a lot of freedom to visit those "off the beaten path" restaurants and casinos.

I was initially concerned about drinking and driving too...but looking back, it seemed that I tended to use the car to go sightseeing during the day and kept drinking to The Strip and Downtown at night. Bus service on the Strip is frequent enough so I was able to go between the two without issue.

Worse case scenario, you can always take a cab back to your hotel and then go to get the car in the morning. Thank heaven for valet!

I loved having a car around though...I was able to go to Hoover Dam, Valley of Fire, a couple casinos in Boulder City, etc.

I've never even considered renting a car in LV, but you have me intrigued because we had already planned on eating off strip for 3 out of our 6 nights. We planned on taking a taxi each time, but I'm wondering if the cost of all our taxi's would equal the rental fee for the week?

Could you tell me the ins-and-outs of car useage in LV? Do you pay for parking at each of the resorts? Or is it free other than the tip for the valet?

Totally agree. We've rented a car our last 3 visits. It all started when a couple friends of mine took me out to dinner. I was kind of bummed that it was going to be dinner at Wynn where we were staying. Instead we jumped in their rental and drove 5 minutes to chinatown.

However, it was really neat to see that there is life off the strip. I have since found alot of go to eateries that are more bang for your buck within 10 minutes of the strip.

It is nice to take a break from the sensory overload of the strip here and there. Once we're ready to rev up the drinking the car stays in our home hotel parking lot.

Every major hotel has free parking. Car rental rates are reasonable.

Next trip in January we plan to drive out to eat and gamble at M resort which seems to be highly touted in this forum.

To each their own....But I totally disagree...I have never rented a car in Vegas even though I go about every 8 weeks..for the past 20 years....Vegas has the best transit system anywhere...I don't need the stress of driving, plus the fact that I would never drink and drive.and what fun is it if anyone doesn't have a few drinks? ..If I stay on the strip I take the free shuttle to Gold Coast, Orleans, Sams Town...all their lunch buffets are under 10 dollars...Downtown the same...

love having a car. Can go where ever you want and I don't like being stuck on the strip all day as well as all night. Always keep the drinking to late afternoon and evening anyway so has no impact on driving and I'm quite happy to forgo a few beers if we want to eat off strip at night. You can have fun without beer ! and it's not like anywhere closes at a certain time so plenty of time for a bevy !
