Overwhelmed First Timer !!

So hubby said lets go to Las Vegas for a cheap 3 day getaway without the kids. We have never been, how hard can that be? Well we are totally confused, so many hotels to choose from. Of course i am drawn to the Bellagio but its not as cheap as we want it. Right now we can get the Bellagio for 2 people with flights and two free show tickets for $1200. There are a lot of hotels for $700-800 but with no free show tickets. I want to arrive and say "omg this is amazing" I want to be able to walk everywhere and be centrally located. Whats the deal with the 24 hour buffet pass, do you have to stay in those hotels? Do they all offer that ? Are there any casinos that we shouldnt miss? So many questions, whats the deal with the good walking shoes? We just did disneyworld and dont know if im up for another walking vacation ! Thanks for any tips you can give me.

I'm not one of the Vegas experts that will reply but I can address the 24hr buffet issue. I stay at CET properties (Paris, Bally's, Planet Hollywood, Caesar's) & you just have to have one of their rewards cards to get the lowest price for the 24 hr buffet. BUT, I say don't do it. We did it last year & regretted it & will never do it again. Long line-ups for sure & the quality of the food has gone downhill, I think, due to this great deal. It's pretty hard to maintain quality food when the price is so low. We ate at 4 different hotels that day. Way too much mediocre food!! Paris is good & the Spice Market at Planet Hollywood as well. All the others I say skip.

It will also definitely be a walking trip as the hotels are all massive, but all in proportion so seeing the pics is very deceptive. Caesar's Palace especially can take hours to navigate.

Be prepared to be wowed almost everywhere & have a great trip!

Your right too many questions but, if you have a number of excellent hotels to stay at that are mid strip and in the heart of all the action, Bellagio being one, but for less expensive places try Mirage, Paris and check out the Venetian prices.

Dont get too worked up over free tickets, depending on the show many tickets can be bought at a discount, and many cannot because they are popular and are top LV shows.

I would skip the 24 buffet thing, too many restaurants to be wasting your time at buffets.

Casinos you should not miss

Bellagio

Caesars

Wynn/Encore

Venetian/Palazzo

Mirage

MGM

Mandalay

City Center

No deal with good walking shoes, just take a very comfortable pair with you.

Las Vegas does have its must see's plus other things to do and see given the time.

First timers should ay least see.

The Bellagio Fountains

The Bellagio Conservatory

The Forum shops at Caesars Palace.

The Mirage Volcano show.

The Upper level of the Venetian, shops, shows, restaurants and Gondola ride.

The Sirens show at Treasure Island.

City Center

Downtown light show if you have time, go at night

Other things to do if you have time.

Go for drinks at MIX located at THEHotel, go in early evening.

Check out the Big name Hotels, Wynn, Bellagio, Caesars, Palazzo, Encore, MGM, Mirage, Venetian and Mandalay Bay.

Check out the shops at Planet Hollywood Hotel.

Have a drink atop the Stratosphere Tower at sunset.

Of course this is just a small list but it will introduce you to the sights and sounds of LV.

Please do yourself a favor and don't consider the 24 hour buffet deal. In the 1st place they are all cheaper (lower quality) buffets. But even if they were top buffets the last thing you need on a 2 night trip is having to plan your mealtime.

"Cheap 3 day getaway" You do realize that the hotel portion will be literally twice as much for a Fri/Sat night getaway as it would be for Sun/Mon nights?

I agree not to give consideration to the show tickets. If you want to see a show you can easily get tickets when you arrive.

Bellagio is a fine choice, but with a little research you may decide on other options. With only 2 nights you aren't going to have time to do much except see the sights on the Strip.

I'm sorry I can't help with the price of packages, but if you will break out airfare, and include your exact dates, we will be happy to give input on hotel prices.

Thanks for the replies, im busy looking at dicemans photos, wow the Venetian looks nice, i love the gondolas!! Actually its 3 nights 26-29 although if it was substansially cheaper might consider sunday 27-30th.

The airline prices right now on southwest are $300 return from Austin non stop. Well i guess the 24 hour buffet is out, i thought that maybe the Bellagio and bigger hotels did it as well? Thanks for all your help..

First of all, try not to stress too much. Vegas is huge, you will never be able to fit everything in to one trip. We have been 6 times and still have things to see!

This very well could be a "walking trip". You do a ton of walking in Vegas, but you can also space it out with spending more time in one area.

If this is a once in a lifetime trip, stay at the Bellagio or Venetian. But if you will be coming back over and over (like most of us here), I would stay mid-priced and spend the money on all the wonderful food and drinks!

Unless you are big eaters, I would only do a buffet once to try it. Vegas is a food lovers dream, with wonderful restaurants.

The Venetian is very nice, combined with the Palazzo it's the largest hotel in the world. That said, they put a perfume in the air that can bother some people. I can't spend more then a couple minutes inside without my nose burning, eyes watering, and a headache kicking in.

If you are sensitive to odors (a woman with a lot of perfume on, walking past the perfume section in Sears etc.) this isn't the place for you.

The Venetian is a great place, but this is something you should be aware of. MANY people have no problem with it but if you're in the minority that does it'll make your stay hellish. From what I hear the smell is NOT pumped into the rooms, just the common areas.

TheDiceMan has some good advice there.

I am with others and while the Bellagio is very nice there are some other hotels that are still nice and will probably meet your needs.

We walk A LOT in Vegas but that is what we choose to do and enjoy doing. There is so many things to see just walking around. You can limit some of the walking but people recommend having good shoes for a reason since you will probably end up walking further than you think you would.

What I suggest to newbies is to choose a block of hotels each day to pop in and out of. For instance choose a block of hotels in the South...start at Mandalay Bay, to Luxor, to Excaliber, to Tropicana, across to MGM, and then across to NYNY. Then the next day start in the middle and hit Planet Hollywood, Paris, Flamingo, Caesars, etc. Some of these you probably just walk through to get to the other but almost all have something you will find interesting. It can be an attraction, bar, restaurant, store, etc. Of course what makes it even better is when you have your favorite adult beverage to walk around with. Also, you can always take the monorail or cab to one end if you want to avoid a some walking. There are many variations on how to "tour" the Strip but just grab a good map, get a general plan, and then go have fun!

I see everyone mention the monorail. Is it very expensive?

Not at all. It is rather cheap. A one day pass will cost you $12 or you can get a three day pass for $28.
