Rio-give it to me straight

We have never stayed at the Rio, but visited during the WSOP 2 years ago. They have sent me a comp 4 nights stay (during the the WSOP---woo hoo, more poker watching, I know I enjoy it, I'm weird) and I needs some help.

How's the pool? How early do you need to get there to get 2 loungers together?

Any good places to eat?

Has anyone used the shuttle to the strip? I heard it runs every half hour, but is it pretty regular? Does it go straight to Harrah's?

I've read the rooms are a touch dated, but our two most recent stays were at Flamingo and the rooms were fine (1 deluxe, 1 go)...will we be ok?

Any other tips you have to share?

Thanks!!

I used the shuttle to get from the strip to Rio. I caught it at Paris. Honestly....I hated it. It was around 8-9ish at night. We pulled into heavy traffic on the strip and waited and waited....It winds you in through Caesars Palace back entrance etc. etc.....It felt like it took forever to get there. Bottom line, I'd go with a cab.

I will say that the vibe in the Rio casino was cool and the Voodoo Lounge is a great time!!

Its too far to walk to the strip, and you dont want to walk it after dark. Plus on two visits, could never win on the slots.

I like the rooms. The ones in Masquerade Tower seem to be "fresher" than in Impanema, but both towers offer huge rooms with good amenities.

I always rent a car, so can't comment on the shuttle.

Pools are nice, not crazy crowded. You shouldn't have a hard time getting 2 loungers together. I like Cafe Maturano's for Italian. Fresh, made to order pasta, great service. Very good drink service in the Masquerade casino, especially at night.

I've stayed there 4 times and have always enjoyed it.

I just got back from a week at Rio and I was pleasantly surprised.

Can't comment about the pool, but there were plenty of restaurants running the spectrum, none of which I tried, to the detriment of my equilibrium. I did get room service one night, which arrived on time and was perfectly good.

I had a room in the Masquerade Tower, which seems like a hike from the lobby area and table games when you're drunk, but really isn't that bad.

Room was quite spacious, if not luxurious. A fridge in the room was handy.

Well stocked sundries store right by the elevators. All the staff I dealt with were friendly and helpful. I'll definitely go back.

Didn't try the shuttle, but it just sounds inconvenient. It was only a $12 cab ride from Mandalay Bay to Rio, so it's probably worth taking a cab if you're not doing it several times a day.

It's been a number of years since I've stayed there, like almost 5 years so I don't have up to date info on the rooms for you. What I can tell you is that when we stayed there, we rented a cabana at the pool and had a great time.

The pool area is pretty nice and the rooms are quite large. I believe that the shuttle only does one stop now on the strip instead of stopping here and there as the other poster stated, you'll need to check the website for up to date info on that. We never had a problem with the shuttle at all.

My favorite part about the Rio is The Voodoo Lounge on the top of the hotel. We go there almost every time we're in Vegas. Check out this link to some pics of the Rio.. I'll see if I can find some of my photos of the pool area & post here later.

Stayed there a few years ago. Room was fine. Nothing fancy but clean and comfortable. The Rio is just too far from everywhere else you might want to be. I imagine if you call the CET/HET number they'll comp you on the strip somewhere and you can then go to the Rio once or twice if you really want to. Big drawback (for me anyway) was the working girls that take over the casino at night. They were everywhere and pretty pushy.

It gets bad reviews on here but the Indian resturanr, Gaylord, is pretty good. My wife and I both enjoyed it and the prices are good. If you poke Indian it's worth it.

The Voodoo Lounge is great too, have a Witch Doctor, their signature drink. It's huge too.

I stayed for a convention so can"t comment on food or pool, but ditto everything Swearingen said. I was dreading going to the Rio but was very satisfied. I'd easily go for low rates, or a comp.

i stayed there about a year ago. if i was getting it comped, i'd go again but if i had to pay, i'd probably stay on the strip. not that rio was bad per se, but i just like being on the strip and walking everywhere.

when i stayed at the rio i used the shuttle and it was pretty much on time....short waits except at night when you might have a line longer then the capacity of the shuttle so that might be an issue. however it got to kinda be a pain taking shuttle back and forth all the time.....also the shuttle doesnt run 24/7 so one night had to take a cab back.

as a fellow poker player oddly enough i never played in their poker room. dont really know why i think maybe because they were running 1/3 nl instead of 1/2 and in my mind i envisioned it playing much bigger then 1/2....

i had no problems with my room it was quite large with a sofa, coffee table. i'm easy to please when it comes to rooms though not like those types that complain about a speck of dust being found on a picture frame.

i say go for it since its comped........
