TR May 5-9 Cinco De Mayo, Birthday & Margaritas!

Day 1 – Cinco de Mayo

Thursday May 5th finally came! Four of us headed to Vegas to celebrate my BFF’s birthday and have a girls weekend away. Three of us were on the same flight and the other had a flight that got in about an hour after we did. We had an uneventful trip to the airport and a speedy Alaska Airlines flight into Vegas. We landed at 12:20 as expected, got our luggage and headed to the offsite car rental compound. I typically rent from Avis but got a good deal through Advantage this trip so we opted for them. I felt like we got the beat down at the counter, no I didn’t want to upgrade for 40 more dollars a day, no I didn’t want a less of an upgrade for 10 more dollars a day and no I didn’t want to upgrade for 10% off. No I didn’t want a GPS, no I didn’t want extra insurance. She finally gave me my paperwork and we were off to get our car. The lady checking us out did a really good job marking all of the dings on the car. We finally headed out to check in at Caesar’s Palace!

Check in was a breeze, walked right up to the counter. I asked nicely if it would be possible to upgrade from my Palace Deluxe to the Palace Premium Room with the bidet. She said no problem, worked her magic and gave me the keys. I had back to back reservations due to an offer I had received and she made sure I would have the same room for the whole time. The room was perfect!

We had 4:00 reservations at Qua Spa for the Tops and Tails special through spafinders.com using our certificates we bought at Costco (99.00 worth for 75.00). We checked in and were given a tour of the roman bath, heated closet for your robe, tea room, whirlpool, herbal steam room, ice room and cedar steam room. We tried the herbal stream room first since I had a horrible cold. It was so refreshing and helped my breathing quite a bit. We then went to the tea room to wait to get called. We had wonderful treatments and would definitely do them again! Then we spent the next hour and a half floating around the spa trying all the different things. It was so relaxing I never wanted to leave. But we had to eat at some point!

Off to the Palazzo for dinner at Dos Caminos based on recommendations from the forum. Before we went to dinner we gambled for the first time since arriving. I won 500 on the second machine I played, too bad that was my one and only big win! The food at Dos Caminos was so good! We were there to celebrate my BFF’s birthday which happens to be Cinco de Mayo and the club music from the bar was so loud we couldn’t even have a conversation. But we all agreed though that the food was fabulous so it was worth it. We had the trio of guacamoles; our favorite was the Jumbo Lump Crab-Chipotle! Two of us had the Camarones tacos, one had Carnitas and the other had Arroz con Pollo. Also tried their house margarita which was good. Back out to the casino floor to lose our money! We then headed to bed.

Day 2 – Casino Crawl

We wanted to check out other areas around LV so we headed out to Red Rock Casino & Resort. What an amazing place! It was huge, had a movie theatre, bowling alley, etc. We gambled a bit there – won a bit, lost a bit. We headed back down the road to Green Valley Ranch. I had wanted to check it out since I had seen their reality show awhile back. It too looked like its own little town. We played there for a bit, no one really won anything at all so we headed out to the M Resort down the road. Not quite as impressive as the other two for sure but we had Restaurant.com coupons for dinner at Hash House A Go Go. Oh my gosh saying their portions are huge is an understatement! They start you off with these super yummy thick biscuits with honey butter oozing on and around them. Two of us shared the chicken pot pie and we didn’t even look like we made a dent. The other had stuffed Hash House meatloaf and then we had the crumbled blue cheese one pound stuffed burger. Really just one of these meals would have been more than enough to feed all four of us. I had read a comment that someone had made regarding how hard it is to eat here knowing how much food is wasted and I tend to agree. I’m not sure what the draw is for making those portions so big. It seems like a waste of money on their part and food. But I will say it was delicious and the service was above par to most restaurants we went to. We piled our full bellied selves back in the car and headed back to LV.

Know some of you will think I’m crazy but I had two offers this time for Vegas. One was for Caesar’s with 300.00 of free play and the other was for the Monte Carlo with 150.00 of free play. So I decided to book both since they were different companies. We checked into the Monte Carlo on Friday after HHAGG. I must say that I was truly disappointed. MC had been my favorite hotel many years ago although I have stayed at other properties since staying there I had fond memories and was excited to be going back. The check in was busy but we didn’t wait too long. Asked for an upgrade based on the original offer that they had said was unavailable when I booked and they said no go – still nothing available, which was fine since we had Caesar’s anyways. We headed up to the room. The elevators look like they’ve seen better days; the carpet in the foyer of the floor we were staying on (28) was dirty. The hallways looked dingy. We got in the room and it looked clean but old. They definitely should be doing some updating. We hung out there for a bit and decided to head back to Caesar’s. Played for a bit and then headed to bed.

Day 3 – The best day!

We had signed up for the Neon Museum sign tour. Now mind you we are not museum people but for some reason this sounded really fun to me. I have fond memories of the downtown area, especially Binion’s Horseshoe which was one of the first casino’s I had stayed at with my grandparents after I was 21. My grandfather who is no longer with us loved playing at Binon’s. My mom and I had hung out at the pool on the rooftop with the water misting on us back in the day. So I was a little nostalgic when we toured those signs…thankfully I held it together so the others on the tour wouldn’t think I was nuts!! We took lots of pictures which will hopefully come out so that I can frame some of them for my office. The tour was about an hour and they recommend you bring water…definitely bring water. It gets hot. They’re trying to do some good things with this important history so if you get a chance and want to do something different in Vegas I’d highly recommend it.

Then we headed to Gold & Silver Pawn (Pawn Stars). We had to buy souvenir t-shirts for kids, hubby’s and co-workers! What a business concept that was to do a reality show at a pawn shop…wish I could think of something to do that on! They’re probably making more money off merchandising than pawning. It was fun to see though.

Then off to Golden Nugget to hit the downtown area. I spent a lot of money at GN and won absolutely nothing! My friend won a bit and the other two sat in the bar watching the pool action. Once I was out of money I joined them and we had quite a few margaritas! We walked around outside under the canopy, some impulse purchases were made…most likely due to the margaritas  we also had some drunk food at Mermaids. Who knew deep fried Oreos were SO good?! We had the Oreos, White Castle Sliders, Chicken Sliders and taquitos. They were all tasty. The cocktail waitresses were so funny there as well. We were just kind of standing around looking at the slots and they kept bringing us drinks. Must have been a slow day! We weren’t complaining.

Then my BFF and her sister decided to do the zip line. Now my BFF is not a thrill seeker, actually quite the opposite so I was like, yeah right…you’re not going to do it. But she had some margarita courage going and did it! She said it was fun too! I was pretty impressed.

We ended up heading back to Caesar’s to get ready for the Jeff Dunham show. We ate at the food court in Caesar’s which was good filler food. The Jeff Dunham show was awesome. He is so funny and he had new material which was great. The show lasted about 2.5 hours which was more than I thought we’d get. We came out with sore bellies from laughing. More gambling and one of my friends won 1000.00 on the multiplayer WOZ slots. She said everyone was up that was playing…I was wondering why I hadn’t stuck with her!

Day 4 – the nothing day

We had no plans on Sunday. We wanted it to be our pool day but it was super windy and the sun was not shining. We headed down to Mandalay Bay where two of us wanted to go. We had a restaurant.com coupon for Hussong's Cantina. We ordered a pitcher of original margaritas, yum. We had the crispy shrimp stuffed avocado salad which was so good I’m going to have to figure out how to make it myself at home! The Tres Tacos, the Shrimp Baja Tacos and Devil Style Shrimp were all also really good. It was a cute little place. They were a little weird on the coupon, making sure we were going to hit the minimum balance on it which was a little odd since the bill was over 100.00 and we only needed a minimum of 35.00 but it worked out in the end. We played at Mandalay Bay for a bit then headed to Monte Carlo.

At Monte Carlo we decided to head up to our room (which we hadn’t been in since Friday – today was Sunday). The room hadn’t been cleaned at all (we had laid on the beds and took a little snooze when we had been there on Friday so the covers were pulled back). I thought that was pretty odd but not really a big deal BUT I had we been staying there I for sure would have had a problem with it not being cleaned on a daily basis. I went down to play my free play while the others rested up in the room. When I got done we decided we would check out early since we didn’t want to come back I the morning. I checked out and paid the resort fee. In hindsight I wouldn’t do this again. The 150.00 in free play was down to 100.00 based on the 50.00 resort fee (16.00 +taxes), the room not being cleaned and just not as friendly of a casino anymore. Back to Caesar’s!

We headed back to Caesar’s and one of our group was not feeling well so she headed to the room. We got ready and went to Margaritaville and had pomegranate margaritas, shrimp and crab dip and chicken quesadillas. We listened to the band, watched crazy drunk people with a rubber man doll dance by themselves on the floor then headed over to O’Sheas to try to frozen bailey’s…YUM really good and a must stop for now on! We headed down the road to Harrah’s and played for a bit more. Then back to the room.

Day 5 – It’s over

Took one of our party (the sick one) to the airport in the morning then went and picked up the others. Checked out of our fab room in Caesar’s and went to the Aria to check it out since we hadn’t been there. Had lunch at their café, food was ok nothing out of the ordinary. We had a French dip, a turkey burger and grilled chicken sandwich. We did have bloody mary’s and a mimosa too. We played a bit at the Aria and I finally won a bit back not much but at least I had money in my wallet again. We walked through Crystal’s and took the tram to Bellagio to see what the botanical gardens looked like. It was pretty cool, looked like a spring carnival with a Ferris wheel and all. Then we headed back to the Aria to get our car and head to the rental car return. It was sad to leave but at least it was raining. Made coming home to the rain a little easier to take!
