Bikerbears 2011 Vegas trip report

So here it is. Work has got in the way as usual but ok, cant complain.

Some of this will probably go down as drunken ramblings or so, fine, dont really care. We had a good time and did our thing without encroaching on anyone else so if anyone wants to look down their nose at us then save it for someone who might give a hoot!

This report is closure on the holiday for me, lets me now get on with planning 2012 :-)

Enjoy.

1. Re: Bikerbears 2011 Vegas trip report

So here we go again. 8th trip to Vegas. Planning for this has been going on since I finished last years report but there was a small chance this trip might not happen given the economic climate. Owning a bar/small budget hotel weve had a pretty hard year all in all but the last few months have turned around somewhat so we stuck to the long term plan anyways. I wont say the trip was on a budget, far from it but me being me I do like to get as much value for money as I can.

Plan- fly continental, stay at Bills for the first 4 nights then off downtown to the Fitz for 6 nights, 2 of which a nice lady on the phone decided to comp-I wasn’t going to argue.

Monday 30th May 2011

The journey isn’t worth mentioning pure and simply cause nothing happened worth mentioning. Got on planes, all on time, in fact landed in Vegas 10 mins early. Bags got, walk outside and into taxi, driver told its not our first time so I don’t expect to see it all get dark outside en route to Bills, he got the idea and $15 and 10 mins later we are at Bills. Weve stayed all over the strip and love the location round there and hadn’t tried Bills yet so when they are offering rooms at round 40 bucks a night I snapped it up. What helped make the decision as well was a comment by someone on the msg board I use to describe the place- “a downtown hotel on the strip”. Well given we love downtown we had to give it a go. Check in was a breeze. What was amusing was for the first time I thought id try the $20 trick. Ive never seen the need before and just used my charm and good looks on whatever female receptionist weve encountered. Logic this time being I wanted to guarantee a good room as much as possible, hopefully with some sort of view. Was an old lady checking us in and when she took my passport and credit card she managed to drop the $20 on the counter. Thing being she had already allocated us our room so she picked it up and says “whats this for” I tells her its for her for hopefully giving us a nice (wink wink) room. She thanks us and really did seem grateful but I don’t think it actually made any difference to the room. Next year ill just go back to the charm thing  Up to room on the third floor-rooms as far away from the elevator as it could be, must be honest and say I was tempted to go ask for my 20 bucks back  Into room-nothing wrong with it at all. We have a view looking out over the entrance of the Flamingo. 2 huge queen beds which turned out to be very comfortable. Strange shape for a bathroom but it worked. All seemed clean and respectable so unpacked, shower and down to the bar. The moment weve been waiting for to compare with last year, 2 jack daniels and coke please, oh and 6 shots of jagermeister. This cost $73 at Encore last year, $63 it cost this year. The shots of jager are to make a couple of private toasts and obviously you need something to wash them down hence the jack cokes  Fat Elvis was strutting his stuff over in the corner so we kicked back and relaxed for a while. Remember weve now been on the go for over 24 hours. Had our drinks and feeling good so decide to set off for a walk with a view to eating whilst out and about. Strolled up to the Mirage and picked up our show tickets. This nearly didn’t happen- as we left Bills and were walking by the Flamingo I mentions to wifey that there’s no porn slappers. As the words come out my mouth my foot slips on something and im having a woosh moment and heading down. Manages to catch myself on 1 hand and almost breaks my wrist. Stands up and looks around-as you do. Seems everyone around thought I was entertaining as they are all laughing and wifeys got tears rolling down her face from laughing so much. Ironic thing being it was a porn card I slipped on!! 

Tickets sorted and we want food. We did BLT last year at the Mirage as we didn’t want a full meal after travelling, but thought it was gash so with a view to a burger being enough for us we headed for KGB at Harrah’s. This turns out to be great planning on my behalf as it was the best burger ive ever had, simple as that. Even wifey though it was good. Wish I could remember what it was though  We found the overall experience much better than at BLT. With bellies stuffed we walks back to Bills, have a drink and play a couple slots and head for bed, the tiredness is setting in. Oh its good to be back. 2 queen beds, wakes at 0130 to find us both in same bed?? No probs as it was her bed, I get 2 fresh beds in 1 night 

2. Re: Bikerbears 2011 Vegas trip report

Tue 31 May

Wakes and up at silly o’clock. Shave shower, gets wifey out her pit and heads off for coffee. Now you wouldn’t think twice normally about getting a coffee in Vegas. I wanted a Starbucks but any would do. Out of Bills heading for Aria., well for some reason or another it ended up being that fancy French bakery place (Jean-Paul?) inside Aria before we got a coffee. Everywhere we went was either closed or cleaning etc. No matter, sorted in the end.

Aria- if you read last years report you will know we were here last year but were so blind drunk neither of us has any memory of it. All I remember was it was dark. This time we are stone cold sober so might actually be able to judge the place for ourselves. Well I was right, it is dark but we liked it. Almost intimate. We were going to have breakfast here but when we got to the buffet we both weren’t really in the mood for food, would have been a waste. So we explored all around, slung a couple bucks in a slot here and there but was never going to gamble there properly- someone’s got to pay for all that darkness  Thru Crystals which I remember from last year as coming across as an empty warehouse. Its all very nice in there now but the shopping is way out of our league. Worthy of a stroll thru tho. Finds our way, eventually into Mandarin Oriental and goes up to their sky reception thingie. Got there, quick look and left. All very very classy but place was deserted as it was so early and I didn’t really feel comfy in there dressed in our shorts/t-shirts. Saw what I wanted to see tho so was happy enough. Moved onto the Cosmopolitan. Now this place we liked. Remember it was early so it was empty as well, maybe when it is wall to wall yuppies it might be different but as it was we loved the place. Joined their players club and wifey immediately wins money-great place this 

Id read about a bloody mary that involved garlic infused something or another so went and found the Vesper bar. Barman knew exactly what I wanted and proceeded to create the best bloody mary ive ever had. My bloody mouths watering as I type this thinking of it.  Left Cosmo quite impressed and heads for Bellagio for a look at the conservatory. We’ve seen most of the bits in there before but still nice to look at and always good for a couple of happy snaps. Leaves there and crosses over heading for Bally’s. Idea being we will go get a sandwich from “Nosh” which weve had before and loved. Stood in a line for 15 mins only to be told they are only serving breakfast, wasn’t impressed but im not going to have a sense of humour failure 18 hours after arriving in my own happy place so I just walked away. No problem, if solids isn’t going to happen then liquids sure as hell are- lets go finally try the “Stage Door”. Well its 2 minutes from Ballys and sure enough about 3 minutes later we are sitting there drinking jack cokes at 2 for $6 which as it happened ended up being the cheapest drinks of the holiday. We got chatting with the barmaid and with a guy sitting at the bar who was a local and seemed a nice enough guy to chat with. Drinks flowed and it seems I might have actually arranged the barmaid to have a date with the guy. Just call me an old romantic  We left after a couple hours and headed back to Bills. Couple of slots and I though a hotdog might be good. Place as you enter Bills on the left hand side, just inside the door. Well given the drink from heaven I had earlier this was the hotdog from hell. It was the worst ive ever tasted in my life. I actually bought 2 for myself and threw 1.5 in the bucket. It was so bad I was scared to have a hotdog everywhere I went in case it was equally bad and put me off hot dogs for life. Yuk! Siesta time, rest up and get sorted for this evenings show.

Once relaxed and cleaned up etc we heads to the Imperial Palace aiming for “Embers”. Looks nice, close by, coupon for a bottle of wine-oh and closed on a Tuesday, grrrrrrr!! Not their fault their opening times don’t suit Dave I suppose . Next door to it is an Italian place. We decides to give it a go seeing as we hadn’t actually eaten all day. It was ok but I wouldn’t go back, to many other options. It put a lining on our stomachs tho so off we go to the Mirage to see Terry Fator. Now I read about this guy coming to Vegas when he first arrived. To a certain degree I had no interest in seeing him until on the way back to Vegas from Laughlin on the bus last year, the driver put a TF DVD on. Had the whole bus laughing and wifey an me decided then we would go see him. Good decision. Tickets $59 each or so, 3 rows from back but able to see everything fine. Show was wonderful. Well worth the money. 1 thing-turns out that nights show he had his 500,000th customer. Apparently the couple that bought that ticket then got moved from their room at the Mirage to a penthouse suite for rest of their stay. All food and drink for their 4 day stay paid for. Limo at their beck and call, we thought it was a nice touch. So left there quite happy and heads back to Bills to throw the bum gear on and head for Stage Door again to meet up with a guy called JNC who I know from the msg board we both frequent. Sits at bar, wifey to left of me, some guy to the right. Gets a drink and straight away gets talking to guy. Now this isn’t JNC, ive no idea what the guy looks like but this guy im talking to is an American. Talking for half an hour and he asks- are you Bikerbear? Wow, im stunned. How in the hell could he know that?? Turns out im talking to TCrawford who I knew JNC was meeting the day before. Small world. Anyways proceeds to sit and chat/drink until they closed the wee bar and we had to move over to the other one. Gets comfy and carries on  Drinks flowed and a nice period of time was had, enjoyed the good company and interesting conversation. TC left at some point so we drank up and called it a night. Staggers up the road and into our room, this one of the great things about Bills, rooms are so quick to get to from the street. It was reading 0330 on the bedside clock and then it all went dark. 

3. Re: Bikerbears 2011 Vegas trip report

Wednesday 1st June.

Sleeping was easy till 0730 which is a new record of lateness of getting up in Vegas for us. Went for coffee and found for the first time in my life ive got the shakes. Wifey thought I was kidding till she saw me stirring my coffee. Obviously a good night had been had  Stroll down to the Cosmopolitan aiming for the buffet. No line at all, straight in and seated. We weren’t starving but enjoyed what we had. Have to say we really liked the buffet lay out, personally I prefer it over the Bellagio and it could give the Wynn a run for its money. Once full up we set off for the Tropicana. Aim being have a look at how its turned out after the renovations and pick up a fridge magnet that they didn’t have any of last year. Well the place looks great now, inside and out. Ive a Trop lover anyways but it really is nice now. Still got no bloody magnet tho!! Ach theres always next year  Once done there we head for NYNY to see how the place that’s replaced the ESPN zone looks. ESPN zone we loved for a few drinks and a snack. It closed within days of us being in there last year so we wanted a look. NYNY has never been a casino with much interest for me but must admit its looking nicer now than before the changes. As for the sports bar thingie that’s replaced the ESPN, it just looks the same that we could see from the doorway except it now has bartop video poker machines. Decided we didn’t really want to go in, in fact im not even sure it was open as noone was there so we headed off back towards Bills. We were way ahead of our schedule so I decides to fit something else in-heads for Ballys and as we walk round the corner theres a shuttle waiting for us to go to the Rio. Something ive wanted to do, go look at the World Series of Poker. Nothing more boring than watching a hall full of people playing cards but it was 1 to cross off of the to do list. Shuttle there, has a walk round, couple of drinks, saw people playing poker, couple of slots and walked outside to find a shuttle back to Harrahs just about to leave so jumped on that. Quick walk and we are back at Bills via Subway for a wee snack. Aims for room. Gets to room and cant get in. Wifeys keycard wont work. Tries a few times and nothing so gets mine out, doesn’t work either. Im thinking ok, house phone and someone will call. As I look around I notice we are at room 207. Lovely except for our room is 307. Im so glad noone was in the room, bit of an oops moment . Time for a rest.

Original plan for this evening was 2 shows, Tournament of Kings then a hypnotist. Plan was to get the tickets on the cheap from the tickets booth places. When we had stopped by 1 in the morning the Tournament thing was coming up as sold out. I spoke to the girl who said theres no way is the actual show sold out, its just the allocation they are given by the Excalibur that’s sold out. This means going back down there to get the tickets then going back later for the actual show, neither of which either of us can be bothered with. Decides to go eat according to our plan and then see what happens. So off we go to Ellis Island and sticks our names down on the list for the BBQ place. 1 hour 20 mins the guy says which suits us fine. Gives us time to have a few drinks and play some slots, we like it there. 1 hour 18 mins later they call our number and lead us to a table outside in a tent thing. Don’t even bother looking at the menu, just asks for 2 combo meals. Short period of time goes by then all these plates/dishes landed in front of us. Bluddy hell, you get an amount of food! Anyways we found it great, really enjoyed it and will aim for there next year again for sure. Cost $24 for 2 people but you could probably feed 4 with the amount you get. Good stuff. Stuffed we decides we are knackered and not bothered about any show so we heads to Stage Door en route for Bills to see if anythings happening. Went in but no seats so we only had the 1 drink and headed back to home base. Gamble a wee bit and drink a bit and head for bed absolutely shattered. Things starting to catch up with us now.

4. Re: Bikerbears 2011 Vegas trip report

Thursday 2nd.

All that sleeps no good for you in Vegas so up at 0500. Picks up coffee at the Flamingo and head north. End game is when we reach downtown. First stop is Casino Royale just to keep our cards alive. Same thing at the Wynn. Then the Riviera for breakfast at the Brit pub in there, Queen Vic. Being a Brit who lives in Holland I don’t get the chance of a fry up very often so I was all for trying this place. Since it opened ive been sending people there instead of the Crown & Anchor cause I don’t like it there. Got our food which was what was expected/wanted and had a good chat with the waitress. The owner then turned up so she introduced us and we had a good chat with him. We will return. Heads off and now going to go thru the sad part of the trip, the Sahara. Never in my life have I had any sentimental attachment to any sort of building but since starting to go to Vegas 10 years ago I seem to have feelings for the old places. Some are hanging on in the face of the giant corporations and I find it a crying shame when 1 of them goes under. Maybe it will return in some form but itll never be the same again. Sahara RIP.

So, off we go, Stratosphere is next, again to keep the cards alive and play a little. We like the casino in there, well we did last year but they seem to have took the machine that made us laugh away so that kinda spoiled it. Played a few slots, couple of drinks and off we headed once again. Next stop is White Cross Drugs. In a perfect world with loads of mornings in Vegas id have liked to have had breakfast at Tiffanys. Coffee at Tiffanys will have to do. Great place, doesn’t get any more old school and from a Brits point of view it was is how we picture an American diner. Id go back there for something to eat for sure. Next up was “Dinos” . Now I knew upfront that the place would be dead at that time but it was another cross on the list. As it happens they had a leak behind the bar which kept us entertained while we had a drink and chatted with the night barman, funnily enough we chatted about Stage Door and some of the more, eh, “interesting” people that go in there.  Left after a while and walked on towards downtown. Lovely stroll, photos, chat with wifey, simple stuff but we enjoyed it. Ends up at El Cortez. Originally we didn’t want to go in anywhere downtown as we will be checking into the Fitz tomorrow but wifey was in dire need to a toilet hence the El Cortez. Sat at bar for a while and rested up then headed for the deuce to take us “home”. By now we are peckish and wifey wants nachos. I want wings so Margaritaville suits the bill so off bus and into there we go. Weve had the volcano nachos there before so knew whar was coming, and then wings on top of that, we gave it a good try but didn’t even make a decent dent in the amount of food. No probs as we enjoyed it anyways and its not hugely expensive there. Back to Bills for a siesta and rest of the legs.

Up and at em, down to the bar for pre show cocktails, well jack cokes actually but you get my drift. Heads once again to the Mirage, off to see “Love”. Weve only seen 1 Cirque show which was Mystere which we enjoyed so were looking forward to this. It did not disappoint at all, fantastic show. Almost visual overload but in a good way. Cant say much more than go see it if you can. The nodding dogs made a very brief appearance but that was nothing to do with the show, just our over indulgence of everything so far. Came out from show and heads straight back to our place to get changed. Heads to Stage Door for our last night on the strip drinkies. Turned out to be a great place to be, met loads of locals and had some good laughs. Our original first time in there barmaid was on and we had a good time with her. Obviously a few drinks were had and we headed home, bouncing of off each other all the way up the road to Bills. In the room it was something like 0430 and then it all went dark, again 

5. Re: Bikerbears 2011 Vegas trip report

Friday 3rd

0930 we got up. In my book looking back that’s a waste of a couple Vegas hours, just lying in bed sleeping, can do that at home. However at the time I was feeling like death with wifey right behind me so first things first, coffee. Sat in the sun outside the Flamingo and if I thought I had the shakes a couple of mornings ago then I think I was having some kinda fit.  The shakes big time. Coffee, smoke (yes im a bad person) and just chill and my limbs all calm down. Solids seem like a good idea so we try Bills own café place. Corned beef hash with eggs over it for me and a “haven’t a bluddy clue” for wifey and we are sorted out totally. Time to pack and move off downtown to the Fitz. Checkout was as easy as check in, walk outside and get in the second taxi of the trip. I say this cause we only got 3 taxis in 10 days, 3rd one being to the airport. That’s a statistic im proud of. 

Anyways we check in at the Fitz. I saw a wee tip on the Fitz on the msg board about asking for a corner room (thank you that person) and even tho we stayed there last year it had never occurred to me. So I asked nicely and received. 31st floor looking out over just about everything. More than happy with room, unpack and head for bar which is about 10 feet away when you come out the elevator. Now, to explain a wee bit. Neither of us are big drinkers. We own a pub so if we were we wouldn’t need to go far for 1. Wifey actually drinks more than I do cause of the timings she is at work but that doesn’t amount to much. Maybe 1 time a week I will have a couple and that’s it. Vegas is our blow out. We can relax and let loose. We’ve never hindered or got in the way of anyone elses holiday, we just have fun ourselves. That’s aside from getting thrown out of McDonalds last year of course  So at the bar I orders the jack cokes at same time wifey has announced she is feeling rough. No surprise given last night but “hair of the dog” will help. Especially jagermeister. Now we drank gallons of the stuff, almost literally, sat in the same stools last year so was shocked when barman says they don’t have it. Oh! But. “we do have this” he says and introduces us to a stuff called “Harlem”. Its almost exactly the same as Jager but just a little sweeter and fruitier as it burns your guts out going down  It just happened to be on special offer. So we partook. 10 mins later wifey feels like brand new again. Now this could be the magical powers of this new wonder drink, or just topping up, ill let you figure that 1 out .

Suitably refreshed we headed out for a look around. W were heading towards the Western as ive never been in there, another tick off of the list. Goes in, sits behind a Queen machine, sticks 5 bucks in, 3 spins and I win 35 bucks, cashout and go find wifey. After spin 1 a cocktail waitress appeared orders 2 jack cokes, she tells us we can only have 1 as wifey isn’t gambling. Wifey points out that’s her $20 in the machine over yonder which the waitress seem to reluctantly accept. We drank our drink and left. Headed for the wee gyros place we go to usually. Been getting gyros from this place for years now and it never fails to satisfy. For us its 1 of downtowns hidden treasures, cheap as chips and great food, can ask no more. Head back to room for a rest and get sorted out. Start of the evening and I want meat so after a couple of wee “pick me ups” we head off for the El Cortez aiming for prime rib. Queue was too long so we abandoned that and headed for the Gold Spike for their prime rib instead. Walked straight in, seated, ordered, eating all within the space of 10 mins. Great prime rib special. Id rate the EC one better by a touch but this 1 will do  2 prime rib and a couple cokes and less than $20, hard to beat. There was all sorts of plans for all the evenings we were going to be there but when that lazy mood comes over you then nothings going to change it. For the rest of the evening we casino hopped, played slots here and there, watched some band on the stage and just generally chilled out till the bodies were calling out for sleep. No idea what time it was, it was dark! 

6. Re: Bikerbears 2011 Vegas trip report

Sat 4th June.

Our first Starbucks sitting outside the Golden Nugget. Best people watching place in the world imho. This was the 3rd year in a row where the custom car show (Vegas cruise) is happening at the same time as us being there. Love watching them all come in and setting the cars up, the noise and smells, hard not to get caught up in it all.

Mission for the morning was suss out the poker tournaments for me to play in. So we bounced slowly from 1 casino to the next picking up flyers. Ended up at the last moment playing in the Fitz’s own tournament. 34 or so started and I came 6th over the course of the next couple hours. Didn’t win but I was happy enough. For most of the game I had an old lady dealer, she was terrific fun, and took no crap. She was worth paying the rebuy just for entertainment  Once knocked out aim for room for a rest then time for solids again. A place we love which isn’t a hidden treasure but if you don’t know about it then you would easily pass the place up, the wee café in Binions, on the casino floor. Make a wonderful chillie. Can walk away from there with a belly full of tasty food for less than $10.

Its “Summer of the 80’s” downtown. We did the 60/70’s the last 2 years and last year the corresponding Saturday goes down as 1 of the best days of my life so in the planning for the holiday I was keeping an eye on who was headlining whilst we were there. Turns out it’s a group called “Missing Persons”. I had googled them and gave them a listen whilst still at home and hoped they would sound better live. Obviously an American group as I and noone I know have ever heard of them. Anyways id like to be nice but cant be, they were terrible. That’s for us anyways, other people seemed to be enjoying so they couldn’t be that bad I suppose. Horses for courses. American football full of jack coke we wandered around just taking it all in, theres something very special about a Saturday evening in downtown Vegas, we love it. Refilled 1 of the footballs and split it, by which time we were a bit worse for wear so made it back to the Fitz, boosted the economy for a while and hit the beds hard. Theres a McDonalds in the Fitz, id said before the trip that we should avoid it and make the effort to go get something more tasty from wherever. That’s easy said sitting in Europe sober, sat night downtown Vegas whilst steaming is another thing so obviously that’s where we got our supper from .

7. Re: Bikerbears 2011 Vegas trip report

Sunday 5th June.

If you’ve been downtown youll know in a sense theres not a lot to do outside of drink and gamble. I plan the holiday this way, a few days on the strip running round like headless chickens seeing whatever we haven’t seen, the shows etc etc then when we get downtown we slow down big time and actually have time to relax properly. I wont keep repeating things here except over the next few days the majority of time is/was spent casino hopping. Coffee at GN and watch the cars again and then we decided to bin it and go back to bed. Lunch was more chilly at Binions. A nice guy moved over to let us sit at the counter and I got talking to him. He had just got a bag of food and recommended the jalapeno buttons or something like that. Opened his bag of food up and tells me to take some, oh my god, wonderful stuff. Im starting to get concerned that im not going to be able to fit a meal of these to myself in  As it happens we didn’t get them, im sure they will be there next year.

Whilst bouncing around we ended up at the El Cortez, id wanted to play to $1 roulette. That’s another “wasn’t to be” thing this trip. Every time we passed it was busy. Im sure roulette will be in Vegas next year too. Anyway I sticks $10 in a video poker machine and 2 hands into it it gives me 4 aces, I takes my money and runs, $171. That money soon departed between the El Cortez and the Fitz as wifey decides it’s a good time to shop in the Indian shop-she isn’t daft  Couple of shirts and pressies later oh and drinks of course we heads to room to drop off everything. Solids would be good so we heads to the California to go to the “Redwood grill”. Id seen someone mention this place doing a porterhouse special on the msg board I read, (thank you that man), so fancied giving that a go. No reservations we walks in. Seated straight away. Asks about the special which we duly order. Seems like we weren’t the only ones tho going by what everyone was eating. Anyways what a fantastic place. Its hidden away and you wouldn’t think to look at it from the outside but it’s a lovely place to eat. Service, ambiance, food, all great. Id happily eat here again with no specials. The meat, it was almost scary it was so big but so tender and tasty. Soup, potato, bread, pudding, all very tasty. This cost $22 each, that’s just a silly price. Had 2 glasses of wine which equated to another meal in price. Very hard to beat this for value. Rest of evening was just bimbling about, totally stuffed with food. Couldn’t even drink much as we were so stuffed but quite happy. Slots, listen to band on stage and bed.

Monday 6th June.

Coffee at GN as usual but no cars to watch. Watched the pan handlers instead. 1 thing of note, there seemed a lot of “down and outs” hanging around. Lot more than normal. Doesn’t bother me in slightest as they usually leave me alone but the numbers were noticeable. In fact if you want to talk to 1 just leave your cigarettes on the table whilst sitting outside the Golden Nugget, you’ll have 1 close by within seconds of that im sure 

Heads to the Fremont for their buffet which we like. Annoyed with myself as ive left the 2 for 1 coupon in the room and cant be bothered going and getting it. Having to spend a whole 7 bucks extra was a killer 

Bellies full we set about our task for the day, walk to Sams Town. To explain my crazy line of logic here. I got this idea off of the same msg board ive referred to a couple times. Saw what I thought was a report of someone having done this same walk. Week or so before we left Europe I was in contact with the guy for any tips etc. He sent me a wonderful reply but it turns out he had got the bus. This I took to be even more of a challenge  Now, wifey doesn’t have the best circulation in her legs, they get tired quicker than normal. She loved the walk to downtown as it was a real casual stroll and we stopped for drinkies on the way. She herself was looking forward to this without knowing the full distance. I just told her it was “a bit” further than Bills to El Cortez and that we would stop a million times if need be. Well we stopped once between the Fremont and Boulder Station and that was just to sit on a wall and drink water and smoke. As it happens we had a great time, was a great walk. You see things your never going to see if you stay within the tourist zones. And to anyone thinking the word danger, don’t let the double murder that happened on 15th and Fremont a couple hours after we passed put you off (that did happen really). I made a mistake and expected Sams Town to be the first big casino we would come across, ooops. Boulder Station was first but no matter, gave us somewhere else to explore. Casino is nice but the stained glass stretching across the casino is impressive. Big place but virtually empty when we were there. Couple of drinks and we left to carry on our trek. Arizona Charlies was next, not as impressive as Boulder Station but nice enough. Last bit of walking and we were at our end point, Sams Town. Never been here before but were impressed with the place. Its bluddy huge, bigger than I expected anyways. Sat at bar and got chatting with the most interesting barmaid of the trip. She was stunned we had walked there as were everyone else when it was mentioned. Had a good intelligent conversation with her for a while and then we played a few slots before time came around for the shuttle. Walked outside and theres the shuttle waiting to go, 10 mins later we are dropped at the side of Binions. We were impressed enough to mention going back next year, no trouble at all. Using the shuttle you could go from downtown to Sams Town quicker than walking from Bills to the Casino Royale. So we are back downtown, want food but not a meal, hey lets get a gyros. Nope too far, done enough walking for now so Binions café it was then. Given the nightmare thing I had at Bills claiming to be a hotdog I hesitated before ordering a chillydog. No need, it was great. We took them back to the room so we could put our feet up and relax at the same time, just before passing out 

Rested, cleaned up and off out to play. Big football full of some concoction from El Bayou and off we go. Casino hop for a while but end up at Binions. She is playing the 50 hand draw poker machine and im playing the 100 hand machine 2 seats along. 20 bucks in and that was us for the next 3 hours. That’s what I call gambling for entertainment which is what we do. Made friends with the cocktail waitress even tho we didn’t need drinks as we had the slushies. Chatted to her whilst we played. I turned at 1 point and had a surreal situation happening in front of me, I thought I must be drunk to see a cocktail waitress arguing with wifey cause she didn’t want to take the 5 bucks wifey was trying to shove in her tip glass on her tray. Wifeys thinking was the waitress must have lost out on loads of tips whilst standing with us. Waitress is saying no no need, I chose to spend time with you 2…… Wasn’t serious stuff, just ive never seen anyone refuse a tip anywhere let alone a Vegas casino floor. Nice woman tho.

Leaves Binions and a light show is starting. Now to bring this into perspective, we are drunk now. Quite drunk. If I hadn’t notice what I did we would have been in bed not long after the lightshow. But, standing there looking upwards I happen to notice something in corner of eye—Hogs & Heiffers. This place has been on the to do list for a couple of years now and im thinking if we don’t go now we will end up not going. So steers wifey in the general direction and off we go. Doorman with no humour gives us a wristband and we are in. Well it’s a biker bar. Wooden floors, rock music, you know the rest. Gets a couple drinks and sits at bar. Keep remembering we are well drunk by now! So, looking up and down and around I notices all the bra’s hanging behind the bar. Turns to wifey and says “give me your bra”. Wifey doesn’t blink and 3 seconds later she hands me her bra. Barmaid comes down bar and I says to her “heres a bra for your collection” and throws her the bra. She replies “if your gonna do it your gonna do it properly and throws wifey the bra back with instructions to put it back on. Wifey does so. Barmaid then leads her down bar and up onto bar where wifey the proceeds to strip and donate bra “properly”. Ive dived across the room to get a better angle for the pictures  and am getting comments like, “shes a good 1” and “she is game for a laugh”. Aside from being drunk I was very proud  When the bra was removed the barmaid put 2 H&H stickers on her sticky out bits. Ill come back to them in the morning. So sitting at bar in silence now and wifey nudges me, I turns to hear what she says and she says “hey, that was my good bra!!!”. I nearly wet myself there and then. It was 1 of them you had to be there moments but it was probably the funniest moment of the trip. For her efforts she was given a free shot of whatever she wanted. She asked for jagermeister which obviously sounds like Jameson. So wifeys there downing straight whisky, even thru the drunken haze I guessed what was coming later. So entertainment had we left in search of our beds, um, via McDonalds  Wifey didn’t want anything but still stuffed a cheeseburger down her gullet. Im sitting in chair in the room watching tv, eatng my burger and noticed wifeys in the toilet a long time. Sure enough the nights fun is coming back on her and shes using the big white telephone. Im drunk too but manages to get her sorted and in turn manages to throw her on the bed. I lies on the bed and eh, it all went dark 

Tue 7th June.

Needless to say wifey isn’t feeling on top of the world so I decide to go for coffee anyways. Take her 1 back so I can wake her and laugh at her about the night before. Her answer, roll over and go back to sleep . The big payback was getting the stickers from the night before off of her bits. Watching her peel them off gently was amusing and she didn’t seem to want my help for some reason  Rest of the day was spent just chilling out, bit of casino hopping, yet another gyros. El Cortez café for their prime rib special which has to be the best value all round meal downtown. Really good. Drinks , slots and a feeling of dread that tomorrow is our last day meaning reality is heading our way. Oh well.

Wed 8th June.

The day ive been dreading for a year but I suppose it’s a better day than tomorrow as at least we are still there. So, coffee and we notice on the big neon sign above entrance of the Fremont an advert for $2 jager shots so off we go. Sod it all , its our last day  Somehow we makes it to Main Street Station and even more somehow ive a coupon for 2 for 1 buffet in my pocket. We like this place as a buffet. Some say its gone downhill, we saw no evidence of it and at those kind of prices whos to complain? Casino hop, sleep, music, slots. One thing wifey did whilst downtown, saved all the tifo win coupons as we went along. We went round cashing them in and saying goodbye and it ended up a nice sum for our last evening.

Bed. For 5 nights the music from under the canopy hasn’t bothered us in the slightest, in fact a couple of night we haven’t even been aware of music thru, eh, sleepyness . Anyways sods law says there will be a band playing and the music was driving us nuts. Not their fault I suppose, can hardly expect them to turn it down cause we are getting a wake up call at 0330. Pretty rubbishy few hours trying to sleep, up, out, checkout, 3rd taxi of the trip and we are checking in. Airport is busy for that time of the day but all passes quickly and we are by the gate. Starbucks try to rip me off as a way of saying goodbye. Tried to short change me and denied it. When I told them to check the camera was told they need the manager for that and gave me the correct change. Aye right!!! 

1 noticeable thing about the airport, the smoking room is back. Wifey noticed it when we arrived but I wasn’t paying much attention at the time but its there for sure. Good for them. Amsterdam airport has smoking places again so waiting for the bags was bearable.  Trip home was as uneventful as the trip there. All on time and returned home via our pub, all fine and the kennel to pick up our wee boy who also seemed fine tho glad to see us.

A few random notes in no particular order at all.

Weather. Was plenty warm enough but has to be the coolest trip weve had. Made me smile all the morning weather forecasters being chuffed cause its not as hot as normal.

Theres a piece of land up by the Sahara which has a banner round it saying 10,000 new jobs which I took a pic of last year, this year theres a few what look like accommodating portokabins standing there. This was supposed to be some sports complex which was announced since the economy went crazy so I wondered what is happening there??

Sahara- very sad.

Putting keycards in machines and players cards in your door locks probably isn’t best. Wynn has the right idea.

Poor darkness. Wifey get up for wc during the night at Bills, bangs head off of door and blames the darkness. Glad it was dark, she couldn’t see me smiling 

Bills, who the hell decided on the height of the showerhead, a schoolkid?? I had to stoop to get wet. I knew upfront there was no safe in the room but it was sometimes a pain opening up the case etc. Wouldn’t let it put us off staying there again, was great value for money.

Bills and the Fitz, neither has a keycheck for people going upstairs which I always think is a good thing.

Most entertaining machine- “Rocking Olives” . Best laughs as it steals your cash .

So there you go, that was 2011. Now starts the planning for 2012.

Loving your report - I'm pretty sure it was my post on corner rooms at Fitz, we always request one and so far have always gotten one :)
