Las Vegas w/kids ages 11, 16.

Would like some suggestions on what to do in LV w/kids ages 11, 16. I've looked over vegas.com on lodging possibilities and free attractions and am overwhelmed. Would appreciate suggestions.

We are traveling in August and planning on staying 2 nights in LV mid-week. I've looked at Mirage, TI, Carriage House, Tuscany Suites, Signature and can't decide. A quiet place after a day/night on town would be nice but the attractions in the megaresorts are tempting; though, I am put off by the surcharges: use of WiFi, resort fees, etc. I don't see us basking by the pool as there are free activities, shopping, and just plain gawking at the buildings that we could do.

I would suggest Mandalay Bay, MGM, or Luxor. MB and MGM have great pool areas for kids and while you may not spend the entire day there it is nice to be able to do it in the middle of the day in August when it will be 100+ degrees.

MB also has a shark reef that's cool, and MGM the Lions, and some cool IMAX stuff inside Luxor.

Also, I would recommend a trip to Red Rock Canyon about a 30 minute drive.

My 12 year-old son and I use Las Vegas as a gateway to hiking in the Grand Canyon and have stayed at various hotels on the strip, almost always in standard rooms. We like Mirage and Planet Hollywood best -- rooms are modern, functional, clean and comfortable. PH's bathrooms are better but, overall, we prefer Mirage for its location, restaurants and service.

Also, for what it's worth, we've always found it quiet and peaceful in the rooms. With kids, it's not like you're going to be hanging out in the casino and, regardless of the hustle and bustle in the public areas, it's never affected us in our room.

Even if you're not planning on a day by the pool, it's REALLY nice to be able to go in the late-afternoon to cool off and relax after a hot day. So, don't discount it all together.

Something you might want to do with the kids is gameworks. It right on the strip around M&m and coke stores. Right now Groupon on has a deal for the place.

for $18, you get an all-day video-game play pass to GameWorks (a $37 value).

You can also go to restaurant.com and pick up a coupon for 80% off (today is the last day) with code summer.

Thanks, All..Mirage may be the choice, but still looking at others. How is the pool like at Mirage, will it be too crowded that time of the year?

I just came back from a trip with my kids, ages 20, 15 &12. We had a two bedroom suite at MGM Signature rented through VRBO. I can't recommend it highly enough. Horseback riding at Red Rock Canyon Stables was great. Hiking the Historic Rail Trail to Hoover Dam was wonderful. We loved the MGM pool. My kids love Cirque du Soleil shows. Matsuri at Imperial Palace is a low cost alternative, and a very good show. Tickets can be found cheaply at TravelZoo. In six days with teens, we found there was more to do than we had time to do.

Will look into Matsuri. Cirque was cheaper when it came to our town so we won't be seeing their shows. Thanks for the tip, Bridgewater.

We decided to stay off the strip and stay at a family-oriented lodging. Any thoughts on Summer Bay Resort, Wyndham Grand Desert, Jockey Club, Carriage House, Wyndham Grand Resort.? These are our options. Matsuri is no longer showing and any suggestions of cheaper shows would be appreciated..

Thank you.

Do not stay off Strip, you will regret it. Go back to your idea of Mirage. Much more to see and do.

Listen to Norgetroll. You will be sorry you are not in the middle of things and have to walk/drive to get there. You are missing the main attractions you mentioned by not being on the Strip.

See previous posts....MGM would be my #1 recommendation, followed by MB and Luxor. Stay on the strip!
