Rio Questions ???

WIll be staying at the Rio in October for a conference, DH likes to be at the conference hotel. Just a few questions about the Rio

1. Am I at risk of getting tunneled on the way from the airport?

2. Any convenience stores / liquor stores near Rio?

3. Best of the Rio restaurants?

Many Thanks!

We really liked the Rio on our last trip. We stayed in the Impanema Tower and the room was nice. There is a shuttle to the strip from the Rio and also next door at the Gold Coast.

1. I believe so, we just asked our cabbie to take surface streets to the Rio. No biggie.

2. Not really, but the shop next door at the Gold Coast was a little cheaper on drinks and snacks.

3. We really like the buffet at the Gold Coast next door for breakfast and it was like $6-7 if you had their players card. Also for Chinese Ping Pang Pong is in Gold Coast. It is really a short walk across the street if you go out the exit by the poker room. At the Rio, McFadden's was ok, bar food. They use to have a coupon on restaurant.com not sure if they still do, but if they do the 80% off code today is SAVE . We walked through VooDoo Steak house and it looked good, but we didn't dine there.

Have fun!

Rio has nice restaurants - The Carnival World Buffet is really good I also like the All American Bar & Grll. Voodoo lounge as well has good food and nightlife.

If you can, request the Ipenema Tower as it is newer.

The Gold Coast is right across the street and, you can get liquor really cheap!! They also have a really cheap buffet - Ports of Call, for breakfast I can't speak on their lunch/dinner.

Rio is one of the hotels where its probably quicker to take the tunnel, depending on time of day, the difference will only be a couple of dollars if that.

I have only had the standard buffet at Rio and it was good, there is also the Village Seafood Buffet. Second vote for GC breakfast buffet. One of the very best values in Las Vegas.

I can't say anything about the Gold Coast buffet, but Ping Pang Pong is a great restaurant as is Noodle Exchange. PPP has been listed in : Las Vegas:50 Essential Restaurants, written by three Vegas food critics. Noodle Exchange has a great deal for lunch (served until 4)- entree, soup, spring roll and rice- all for $7. It is not a fancy place, but the food is good (or you can order from the regular menu).

Just exit by the Rio buffet, cross Valley View (no heavy traffic so I don't bother walking to the traffic light), cut through the GC garage, take the escalator down and you will be near the GC lobby.

We usually stay at the Rio or the Gold Coast. Our conference is always at the Rio.

We always eat at GARDUNO’S at the Palms. Good Mexican food and yummy margaritas.

We have had breakfast at the buffet at the Rio and it is very good food... But the Gold Coast buffet was less expensive and the omelet station was fantastic. We aren't buffet people though.

Ping Pang Pong is an Authentic Chinese restaurant. I really liked it.. but hubby not so much.. then again, I'm more of a foodie than he is. It comes highly recommended from me:)

We have only been tunneled once to the Rio because I wasn't paying attention... Now we know to ask for surface roads. It may take two or three minutes longer but it's about $7 -$10 cheaper and much less nerve wracking.

Don't forget the shuttles at both the Rio and the Gold Coast that will take you to the strip.

This is one of those instances where you should pay attention to what is said, and also what isn't. Note that the regulars on this board all talk about going next door to Gold Coast, and don't talk about Rio. Pay attention.

I will also add the Cortez Room (now being renovated) is very good at Gold Coast. And as mentioned the liquor store there is 2nd only to Orleans in price of all hotel/casino shops.

Gold Coast is a hotel/casino that attracts more locals than tourists, and everything there reflects that. The casino is MUCH BETTER than that at Rio when it comes to paytables and minimums, again to attract locals.

BTW: If you want fine dining, Alize at Palms is the best restaurant in the area.

I'm sorry I can't help with Rio restaurants. The only reason we visit Rio is to go to VooDoo Lounge, which is a must see.

Have stayed at the Rio twice so far, and will be staying there again in October. The Carnival World Buffet is great for dinner. Have never had any other meals there. I really like the Sao Paulo Cafe for breakfast. The room service cheeseburgers are really good, too.

As stated before, ask for the Ipanema tower, since these rooms have been more recently renovated. One suggestion I would make is that if you have any intention of taking a nap during the day, be sure to ask for a room that is NOT overlooking the pool area. The booming music that starts at noon and goes into the evening will make it real hard to get a nap.

Hit up the voodoo lounge for drinks. I think the food was over priced and not worth half of what I paid for it.

A cabbie would be more inclined to use the tunnel to get to Rio, however, the time savings doesn't justify the additional cost. It's understandable if they want to use the I-15 but they don't have to use the tunnel to get there.

As for best restaurants there, I have had good experiences at Carnival World buffet and I like Sau Paulo Cafe. As for the rest, most don't appeal to me and they tend to close places I have liked there.
