January advice with 2 teenagers

We will be in LV for 2 nights 3 days in January. We generally stay in Super 8 type hotels. 2 queens, clean and breakfast. We like to walk but will have a car. We will likely drive out to Hoover dam. I want the kids to experience the lights and glitz of LV. None of us are interested in gambling. We don't want to spend alot.

1. Am i right that we can't go into any casinos? Is it worth it to park and look around outside?

2. I am willing to pay a little more than the absolute cheapest hotel if it is worth it for the experience/location. Any suggestions?

3. From what i can tell the rides at circus circus are too juvenile for our kids. Any other fun night activities?

Here's a link that has some ideas for teenagers...

To answer your questions...

1) You can go into the casinos with the kids, they just cannot gamble or go into any of the bars. Just stay on the main paths through the casino and you will be fine.

2) I would suggest Mirage, TI, Planet Hollywood. For a little more, I would consider Bellagio, Aria, and/or Cosmo.

3) Look into the roller coaster at NYNY and the rides at The Stratosphere.

Also, they will love Hoover Dam.

What is the most you want to spend per night? That would give us a guideline for hotel recommendations? BTW, you won't find places that provide breakfast with the room cost.

1. Wrong. You can all enter and walk through the casinos. You can not stop and watch or linger.

2. Las Vegas is unlike other venues in that the hotel/casinos actually cost less than places such as Holiday Inn Express. And you don't want to consider Super 8.

Your rates, and possibly your options, will greatly depend on which two nights in January you choose. Then your biggest decision will be whether to stay on the Strip or choose a more family-friendly option away from the Strip such as Orleans or South Point.

3. There is plenty to do and see, although weather might be a limiting factor. I can't recommend much without knowing age and interests.

As others have said, you and your kids can walk all over the hotels and through their casinos, the kids just cannot enter the actual gaming table and machine areas. There are plenty of things to see inside each property.

There's not a lot to do at night for teenagers, but your whole family will enjoy seeing the Bellagio fountains lit up at night and that costs nothing at all.

I cannot agree with the previous poster's hotel suggestions for you. You should certainly stay on the Strip in one of the major properties to get the "feel" of Vegas but I might suggest Luxor or MGM Grand which are both reasonably priced and not too fancy.

One of the largest conventions (CES-Consumer Electronics Show) takes place from Jan 10-13. Expect rates from Jan 7 to 15 to be high. Avoid this time if possible. When your exact dates and budget folks can help with your search. Remember weekends in Vegas can be twice as expensive as weekdays.

The circus circus has a couple of rides that the teens will like. also have the nyny roller coaster. Near downtown, there are go-kart tracks too. The free shows seen from the Strip should also be seen att least once (Bellagio fountains, Mirage Volcano). The LV Speedway might have something for the teenagers too.

I would recommend staying near Flamingo and the Strip just for the convenience and 'feel'. Caesars Forum shops, Miracle Mile, are also something to see. Spend a night on Fremont St too.

If you're from Manitoba, you may not want to go to a place with snow.

But if the weather cooperates, there should be good skiing and snowboarding at Mt Charleston. It's been a while since I was there. But the last time I was there, the terrain was just as challenging as a Utah resort. But Mt Charleston is smaller.

You could also rent mountain bikes or take a guided mountain bike tour. The River Mountain Trail is fun because you can see Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam and it's fairly flat. Out at Blue Diamond and Red Rock, there are also good trails, but I have not been out there to ride yet.

If you go mountain biking in Las Vegas in January, you also get to laugh at the locals and the Californians wearing tights, balaclavas, jackets and shoe covers because the temperature has dropped down to a bone-chilling +15 C.

If you are going to be in town on a weeknight, might as well just stay in one of the big casino-resorts, as they will be cheaper than the chains.

If you are coming on the weekend, it might make sense to stay in one of the chain places. Very easy to park, free breakfast etc. are nice when feeding a family.

Great suggestions thus far. thankyou.

Jan 4-7 are the dates.

Hotel price wise I can find hotels for $70/avg for 3 nights which would be my benchmark. I would pay more if i get substantially more.

I assume swimming is not a possibility in Jan. It will be -30 for us at home.

When surveying the strip do we drive from resort to resort and pay for parking? or are they close enough to walk.

Sounds like one night on the strip and one on Fremont will be fine.
