Vegas Virgin TR ~10/15-10/22~ Vegas, Valley of Fire and GCNP

So it’s official! My Husband Chris (26) and I (24) are no longer Vegas virgins! We got back from our trip about a week ago and we had an amazing time. We visited Vegas, Valley of Fire and the Grand Canyon. I will include both VOF and GC for those of you that are interested (I will make them as brief as possible)

A little background – C and I celebrated our 1 year anniversary on October 23rd and decided to plan a pretty big trip for it. We have both always wanted to visit Vegas. Since we would be in the area we also decided to extend our vacation and spend a few days at the Grand Canyon. We stayed at NYNY and saw Penn and Teller, Mystere and Ka. Oh and we are also low rollers so some of our gambling wins and losses might seem a little pathetic to some of you high rollers. haha!

Here is a link to our pictures. I hope you enjoy!

Day One (10/15)

It is finally here! After countless hours stalking the TA forums we were actually leaving for LV! We flew out of ATL around 10 am. My dad works for the airport so he surprised us by having someone escort us to the front of the security lines (we felt very important!).

Normally I wouldn’t even mention the flight but this one started off strange… First of all I was a little annoyed with Delta (more of that to come on our return flight) because I think they changed our seats. I booked two seats next to each other with one of them being the window seat, but that was not the case. When we go to our seats there was someone sitting in mine. I politely told the gentleman that it was my seat and he just stared at me. I repeated my self and his wife rudely stood up and said “What do you want him to do about it?” I said, “um, I would like him to give me my seat.” They then argued with me that it wasn’t my seat that it was theirs. Another passenger behind them backed me up and also told the guy to move. Once they finally scooted over I asked the single rider that was sitting next to my husband if she would be ok with switching because she would still have an aisle seat and my husband and I could sit together. She said “Sure!” but also informed us there was a HUGE bag of blankets stuffed on the floor board of the window seat. I went over to try and pull it out and she wasn’t joking. This bag had to of held over 100 of the crappy airplane blankets. We caught the attention of the flight attendant to give them to her and she just looked annoyed, grabbed them and walked away. Seriously, not even an apology???

The rest of the flight went smoothly. We had those monitors in the head rests which helped the 4 hour flight go by quickly. We found the trivia game about half way through the flight and played that for the remaining time. I was getting REALLY lucky with my guesses and won a few times. I was hoping that this meant I would have a lot of luck gambling 

There are slot machines in the airport??? Haha we were obviously in Vegas. Once we landed we immediately headed toward baggage claim. While we were waiting I headed to the bathroom. I was surprised to see a SHARPS container next to the sink. Haha! This is something new to me. I’m sure there was a medical reason behind it but the first thing that came to my mind was “Man, people in Vegas really know how to party!!!” After grabbing our bags we took the bus to the car rental area. We decided to rent a car only because we were visiting VOF and GC. C works for Enterprise so we were able to get a pretty good deal. He had his mind set on getting a convertible. When we got there the only type they had left was a Sebring. Those aren’t my favorite but he was sooo excited and would be doing all the driving so we took the $10 per day upgrade. It was worth it!

Next we began our drive to NYNY. We put the top down, turned the music up and enjoyed the ride. Boy it was HOT. Way different then the Ga heat though so we actually grew to appreciate it. It was nice to not be dripping in sweat for once lol. Some how we got a little lost (damn GPS) but we made it to the hotel. We opted for the self parking and headed into NYNY. Check in went smoothly. I was very polite to the guy at the front desk but when I asked about upgrades he said there were none available unless we wanted to pay $30 more per night. We decided to save our money and head up to our Park Avenue Deluxe room. We both felt like big kids walking to the elevator. All the lights and sounds were getting us so excited! We couldn’t wait to unpack and get back downstairs to start having some fun! The room was nothing special. It was nicely decorated but wasn’t too big. Perfect for us, since we knew we would not be spending much time in it any way. We decided to go ahead and divide up our gambling money and put it in the safe. We are (very) low rollers and decided on $100 per day per person. With the time change it was about 6 pm when we headed downstairs. We wandered around downstairs for a while taking it all in. I LOVE the way they made it look like you are walking through a city. We decided to eat at America because I wanted to check out the relief that they had on the ceiling. I was not impressed with the food. C got the country fried steak and mashed potatoes and I got some Italian dish (I think lasagna, I can’t remember). Both were way too greasy. You could see the butter and grease pooling underneath and next to the food. Yuck. Either way the service was good and the drinks were strong so we still left a decent tip. Hey, It wasn’t the waitress’s fault the food wasn’t good!

After dinner we started hitting up some slots. My friend swears by Goldfish so we found those first thing. Right away we were approached by a CW and ordered a diet and rum for me and C ordered a Grand Marnier on the rocks. We handed her $5 right away and she looked a little shocked and thanked us a few times. When she came back she apologized to C about how small his glass was and said she would be right back. She then brought him another full glass without ice. I must say, C was pretty excited about this. Our excitement then died as we each lost all of our $20 that we put into the machine. C then wanted to go try out Black jack. I watched while he played because I wanted to learn a little more about the game. C told the dealer that he had never played before but the dealer still seemed rude when C did something wrong. Luckily some of the other players helped him out and explained some of the rules to him. We were grateful for this, but C still lost everything he put down lol.

We both left the table, grabbed one of those huge frozen drinks and headed out to find the taxi line to catch a cab to Rio for Penn & Teller. The strip at night is beautiful! We love their show BS and were pretty excited about seeing their magic show. The cab fare was around $10 before tip. We headed into Rio, picked up our tickets and then I decided to give roulette a shot. I found a $10 buy in table and cashed out at $136 a few turns later! From that point on I played the same 4 spots on the table. They seemed to treat me well.

After cashing out we headed back to the Penn & Teller theater, bought some drinks and headed in. We had amazing seats in the 3rd row. There was a box on stage as well and a sheet you could sign. We opted to not go up and check them out, but instead just sip on our drinks and people watch. Off to the right of the stage Penn and someone else were playing music. I wonder how many people knew it was him up there! We both really enjoyed the show. I would suggest watching some of their show BS before purchasing tickets to see if you like their humor. Some of their jokes/tricks were political, rude and crude. Just what we wanted! We had a great time. Penn and Teller also hung out after the show to sign autographs and pose for pictures. We got our picture with Penn. He called everyone, no matter who they were “boss”. I found this rather amusing in my state of slight intoxication.

After the show we hopped back in a cab to NYNY, played (and lost) at a few more slots, grabbed a few more drinks and then headed up to bed. I think it was about 1am at this point but we were exhausted. We wanted to rest up for our first full day in Vegas!

Day two (10/16)

They next day we woke up, showered and headed downstairs for breakfast. At check in we were handed a coupon book for drinks and restaurants in the hotel and decided to check out the BOGO breakfast on the patio of Il Forniao. I ordered the strawberry and banana waffle and C had an omlette. Mmmm they were good. The patio was cool because it was actually indoors and we were overlooking the casino. Nice for some early morning people watching. We sat there guessing if some of the people were still at the slots from the night before or just enjoyed early morning gambling lol. After breakfast C decided to place a bet on one of the Sunday football games. He headed to the Sports Book while I played (and lost) at a few slots, explored the hotel a little more and then headed back to the room to relax and plan out the day. While in the room I also did a little secret planning for one the anniversary presents I was going to surprise C with the following day. I reconfirmed the couples massage appointment I made for Monday and then also called and ordered room service for before the massage. He had no idea :)

When I knew the game was wrapping up I left the room and headed to the sports book to meet him. He was pretty excited that his team won. We both did a little more gambling, had a few drinks and then headed upstairs so I could grab a slice a pizza. The pizza hit the spot! Once I was done stuffing my face we decided to hit the strip. The only plans we had for the day was to see Mystere at TI at 9:30pm. We figured that instead of getting a cab we could just spend the day getting to TI and take a cab back afterwards. We stopped in almost every hotel on the way that was on that side of the strip. I must say we were pretty impressed by the outdoor escalators (oh, the little things). After buying one $8 16oz beer at a bar we decided to check and see if the drugstore we passed had beer. Oh and they did! We picked up two 24oz beers each for $4 a peice. Such a better deal.

Oh, the porn slappers! After reading about them on TA they were actually a little underwhelming. Maybe it was just porn slapper off season but we didn’t see that many or think that they were rude. They were at every major corner but as long as we didn’t make eye contact they didn’t bother us.

We absolutely LOVED Cosmo. We checked out the Chandelier bar and took the elevator to a few of the different floors to check it out. Everything there is so elegant a creative. I was also impressed with the light up roulette tables! We decided not to gamble there and headed back out to the strip.

Once we go to Bellagio we check out the gardens. How amazing! They smelled great and we loved the fall theme. We were blown away by the fact that everything was made out of flowers and plants. So cool! We also caught a fountain show which was great. One regret I have is that we didn’t make it to another show during our trip.

Once we made it to TI we were starving. I didn’t think their selection of restaurants was very impressive. We stopped at the bar/grill they had but found out the wait was almost an hour and skipped it. We found a 50s diner type place and I grabbed and patty melt and C had a burger. The food was ok, but pretty over priced for the quality. After eating we gambled and drank a little until it was time for the show. Oh, I almost forgot... I HATED the smell they were pumping into that place. It gave me a headache but I got used to it after a while.

Holy crap was the line long to get into the show! It wrapped almost all the way around the casino! Once the doors opened it moved quickly. We grabbed a drink inside the show ($7 for a mini bottle of wine and $8 for a mini bottle of vodka. Oh boy…) and then found our seats. We also had 3rd row seats to this show that were AMAZING. There was some pre-show entertainment that was pretty hilarious and made the time fly by. Mystere was breathtaking. It is quite possibly the best show I have ever seen. I loved how most of the skits were short and intense. They would follow up each very intense section with a little bit of comedy. I highly recommend this show!

After the show we headed to the huge cab line to catch a ride to Strip Burger (I had purchased a restaurant.com GC). I’m not sure if it was just the drinks or what but those burgers were fantastic. I ordered the regular cheeseburger and onion rings while C ordered the bacon cheeseburger and fries. Both of our eyes were bigger than our stomachs and we were barely able to finish our burger. Since we didn’t have a fridge in the room we had to abandon most of our fries and my onion rings. Oh well. We had the grand idea of walking back to the hotel but soon decided that we were too drunk and walked, or more like stumbled, to the nearest hotel’s cab line. On the walk over I was shocked by how many children we passed. I’m not talking about 10+ year olds, but babies and children in strollers… it must have been sometime after midnight at this point. In my opinion, Vegas is not a place for children that age, especially at that time of night. But, to each his own I guess.

Once at the hotel we both split up to do a little more gambling. At one point I tried out Blackjack with C and we had an awesome dealer who was funny and gave us a lot of helpful tips. We also met a couple from Australia who we hung out and gambled with for a while. The CW was very attentive and after many many drinks, some loosing and some winning we decided to head back up to the room around 3 or 4 am.

At this point I was regretting the 9am room service that we were getting, but luckily I remembered to set my alarm. If not, I might have slept right through room service knocking on the door.

On the agenda for tomorrow: Couples massages, Hash House A Go Go, Valley of Fire, The Strat and Fremont Street.

I love reading Vegas virgin reports. Some of us don't even see the slots at the airport anymore or notice how cool it is that a restaurant "patio" is inside because we go so often. Reading reports like yours brings the magic back into it. ;) Thanks for sharing. I'll look forward to reading more.

Day Three (10/17)

Oops…I just realized I got some of my days jumbled. The room service and massage were actually Tuesday, not Monday. I missed my chance to edit my previous post. I’ll just blame the confusion on the drinking ;)

Alright so Monday morning I had an alarm set for 9 am and boy were we dragging! We got up, showered and then headed out to HHAGG at IP. GPS took us behind the strip instead of on it and then we missed IP completely because we were just in awe of everything. We had seen most of the strip the previous night but it does look different during the day. We turned around and made our way into IP…what a confusing hotel. You can tell it is a lot older and it felt like we were following signs forever for HHAGG. Also, the smell of smoke in that place was a little overwhelming. C pointed out that most of the newer hotels had very high ceilings in the casinos so the smoke rose. This was the first time I felt like I was walking into a wall of smoke when we entered the casino. Once we got through the maze that is IP we put down our names for a table. Hmm we were probably not going to be seated until after breakfast was done being served at 11am but the hostess told us they did have a limited breakfast menu during lunch. When we got seated I ordered the fresh squeezed apple juice and the Tractor Driver with a brown sugar and banana pancake. This was the best pancake that I have ever had! C ordered the 1 lb mashed potato and bacon stuffed burger. He opted to not get a side due to the fact that it was a ONE POUND burger lol. Everyone is not lying when they say the portions are huge. I was only able to eat 1/3rd of my pancake. The meal was fantastic and so was the restaurant.com GC I had.

We then left and headed out toward Valley of Fire. This was a very enjoyable 1 hour ride from the Strip. We had the top down the entire way (which led to a burnt scalp and a sunglass tan for the both of us. Oops!) and really enjoyed the scenery. Who knew the desert could be so beautiful! We hit up every spot inside VOF and took a ton of pictures. There is not a lot of hiking to be done as most of the views can be seen from a short walk from your car. We opted out of any of the short hiking trails because we knew we had a long night ahead of us. At one point there was a cop blocking the road. When we pulled up he told us there was a VW commercial being filmed and that we could pass in about 10 mins. Once he let us go we passed a completely covered car with a bunch of people standing around it. It was pretty neat. Later on we actually caught a glimpse of it! I highly recommend VOF to anyone looking for a day trip while in Vegas. The landscape looks like Mars and it truly is breathtaking. The pictures I took do not do it justice. We were also exited to see a lot of petroglyphs (cave drawings) that were still on some of the rock facings. Oh, and on a side note about the desert heat… after sitting in the car with the top down waiting for the commercial shoot to be done we got pretty sweaty (it was in the 90s). Once we got out at the next vantage point we were shocked to notice that all of our sweat was completely gone! This may be a little TMI but like I said, we are used the intense humidity of GA summers.

After getting back to the hotel we both showered, changed and then headed back to the 24hr pizza place in our hotel to grab a bite. We spent a little time gambling and drinking and then caught a cab to the Stratosphere to check out the ride. We were a little shocked that you had to pay just to get to the observation deck but oh well. We had planned on getting some drinks at the bar but realized the views were just as good with out paying for a $12 drink. Once at the top we took some pictures, watched a few bungee jumpers and then rode a few of the rides. We rode X-scream once and Big Shot twice. They were a blast! There is nothing like dangling 109 stories off the ground lol.

After we had enough of the rides we grabbed another frozen drink at Fat Tuesday’s and caught a cab to Fremont Street. I must say, we LOVED that place. Oh, the people watching was fabulous. We caught a light show almost immediately after stepping out of the cab. After watching that we headed toward the end of the street where there was a cover band. Oh boy, the people dancing in the crowd were hilarious! It is definitely a different crown down on Fremont. C and I, along with another couple spent, the good part of an hour just watching, laughing and drinking. I feel wrong saying it, but you could tell some of these people were a lot more then drunk. Oh, and then we spotted a BABY! In the middle of the dance floor! People were jumping around and dancing like crazy people while a baby just sat in a stroller in the middle of it all. The very, um, classy parents would stop the drink and drug infused dancing every so often to bend over and touch the baby. I was very blown away by this. But once again, to each his own. Once YMCA came on and everyone went crazy with excitement I decided I had had enough and we grabbed another Blue Moon (which is my favorite beer, and is everywhere in Vegas and Arizona) and headed towards the other end of Fremont. We stopped in a few of the casinos but did no gambling. I was starting to only feel comfortable playing the tables at NYNY for some reason. We spent the rest of the time watching a few zipliners, some street performers, a possible hooker try and pick up some guys and a spray paint artist. The hooker and I later met in the bathroom when she asked me for some money…. Yea, I got out of there fast. We found a gift shop that sold cheap 24oz beers, picked up some extremely tacky souvenirs for friends and then grabbed a cab back to NYNY.

Once back at NYNY we met up with our Austrailian friends from the pervious night and enjoyed a few vodka red bulls and some winnings at roulette. I cashed out up about $150 and then we headed up stairs to crash.

It may be a little while until I can post the rest of our TR. Grocery shopping and house cleaning are calling my name…. oh to be on vacation again! Stay tuned for our last day in Vegas and our trip to the Grand Canyon.
