Trip Report - Dec 6 - Dec 11

Ok, This if my first stab at a trip report. If you don't like misspelling, grammar mistakes, and runon sentences you're reading the wrong trip report. You have been warned. I'm going to post my TR as a reply and do it by category instead of chronologically.

Looking forward to it. If you can spell "chronologically" you can't be all that bad at spelling lol.

I'll start with my thoughts on the shows we saw

Big Elvis

I never would have gone to this show if not for all the talk of Big Elvis on this forum. This show was great. We got there 45 minutes before it started and got the last table which was right in the front. While we were waiting I asked my wife what she thought that giant chair was for in front of the stage. I was not prepared for how big, Big Elvis was. He mixed it up between old hits and his version of some semicurrent songs. This has to be one of the best bargains in all of Las Vegas. We got a $5 PITCHER of beer and watched the free show. Now that is value.

Absinthe

Ok, I'm probably in the minority here but I didn't really care for it. I was prepared for all the language but I was not prepared for the vulgarity. I wish I would have known before I went. I'm sure someone on here has talked about it but I guessed I missed it. There was talk of everything from swapping bodily fluids back and forth in people's mouth to sex acts. For me it all seemed really forced. Have you ever met someone who's self-confidence was so low they used the F word every 3rd word. That what I felt like. They still haven't replaced the roller skaters. There were some decent acrobats but overall it just didn't do for me.

Mac King

This show was great. You can get tickets for about $15/each at tix for tonight. He's a really funny guy and has some great Magic. This was my wife's favorite show we went to. Well worth the money and its nice for a change that it's in the afternoon. I highly recommend this show.

Mystere

I believe this was the first Cirque show in Vegas. We got tickets at tix 4 tonight for about $60/each. These were for tickets in the top 5 rows in the middle. When we got there, we showed an usher our tickets and she asked if we'd like to sit closer. We got tickets about 5 rows from the front. This must happen all the time as this process was very organized and they probably moved 50 to 100 people closer to the front. This a good, solid Cirque show. If you like Cirque, I'm sure you'll like this one.

The Venetian

We checked in at the Venetian at about 9:30pm. I was prepared to try the $50 trick/tip/bribe (gasp in horror at someone trying this). We were upgraded two suite levels to a piazza suite. It was a 1,400 sq feet suite which had just been remodeled. In fact, we were the first people to stay in it since the remodel. Other than a second bathroom, we didn't really use the extra space but it was very nice.

Overall I really enjoyed the Venetian. The maid service was good. You don't hear too much between the walls but it seemed like you could hear people in their rooms if you were in the hallway. One day I left our room to hear the neighbors (it must have a been a honeymoon). Another day I could hear another couple talking in their room.

I really thought drink service in the casino was just average and we played there at least some every day we were there. However, if you wanted to get drinks you could head over to LaScena Lounge. If you played one credit ($1) on video poker you could get drink service. They also served my wife who was not playing. Patrick was very good to us here.

There was a band that was fairly good that played there in the LaScena lounge but it was the same band that played there Thurs, Fri, and Saturday night. That was odd I thought.

Hotels, Gambling and more.....

Our 2nd day we drove to the M resort. This is a nice hotel and casino. We at at Hash House a Go Go and ate the obligatory sage fried chicken and waffles and it did not disappoint. You should split this $15 breakfast which makes it relative cheap as well as tasty. I wouldn't make a special trip to the M but if you want something different go for it.

Cosmo - My wife and I did the $100 promotion where if you lose $100 you can come back and they give you $100 in slot free play. This is an excellent way to play for a while. My wife and I did this and ended up down about $85 between the two of us. It gave us an opportunity to play some more expensive slots we may not have normally played. The hotel is modern and nice. Its not my style but I still enjoyed it. The drink service was great here and they give the mixed drinks in a good size tumbler.

City Center in general - This place was a little confusing to me. I may not have given it a fair chance but its big and how to get from one place to another was not always clear in my opinion.

NFR - For those of you who read my post about avoiding the rodeo crowds you will find this paragraph particular amusing. We found ourselves in the Mirage last Friday night and eating at the California pizza kitchen which sits kind of between the sports book and casino just in the middle of the building. There must have been 500 cowboys and cowgirls all cheering at the rodeo on the big screens in the sports book. After about 30 minutes I found myself cheering for the rodeo as we could see the TVs from our seats. Pizza was solid and reasonable priced.

Ethel M Chocolate Factory - We drove here and took a tour. Its pretty cool and a nice break from busy casinos. They have a gift shop where much M&M souvenirs are sold as well as a shop selling the chocolate. They have an enormous cactus garden that you can walk through at night that is decorated with over 1,000,000 lights.

Margaritaville Casino - We played in here for a little bit. If you like Jimmy Buffet you'll like the decor/dealers etc. Its not real big but fun. The coolest thing about Margaritavile is that you can be standing on the sidewalk on Las Vegas Blvd, walk two steps and open their door, walk another two steps inside and be standing at a craps table! No 10 minute walk to the hotel from the street.

Bellagio - We played a little bit here. WPT had a poker tournament going here and I saw Antonio Esfandiari and David Williams. Maybe not a celebrity sighting but cool nonetheless. OK, one gripe about Bellagio. I wasn't comped a drink while playing video poker? Maybe b/c I wasn't playing full credits. Also, at the Venetian sports book they only comp your first drink while playing video poker? We saw 3 fountain shows which I always enjoy. The conservatory looks awesome for Christmas.

Paris - We ate lunch at the eifel tower restaurant. At lunch it is all casual and jeans and a shirt are not a problem. I had this burger made of lamb with a spicy sauce on it and it was probably the best hamburger I've ever had. Lunch is a great way to do this restaurant if you don't feel like wearing a suit at night. It had a great view of the Bellagio.

They happened to be filming an episode of the Vegas Cops show and we saw the police talking to a guy on the strip while they were filming. Kind of cool. Also, We were considering to the helicopter tour to the grand canyon. After listening to the advice on here we decided no to go b/c we wouldn't get to see GCNP. The second day we were there a helicopter went down killing everyone inside. In addition, there was couple who were celebrating there 25th anniversary on board and their kids have given the helicopter trip to them as an anniversary gift. Sad. I'm glad we chose not to go.

One thing we did is bring $2 bills for tipping. This was very handy and I think that it may help you get remembered a bit more by the CW. In Vegas, you burn through so much tip money that it was nice to have a small stack of these set aside for tipping.

A couple of miscelaneous things.....Nevada now requires that you have a hands free device when using a cell phone and driving. Also, feel free to PM if you have questions about the Venetian or anything else.

If I think of more I'll post
