Things that surprised or still surprises you about Vegas?

1. Most standard hotel rooms do not have a microwave, refrigerator or coffee maker.

2. That you can check-in to your hotel way before the standard 3 or 4 pm check-in time. ( I love arriving in Vegas at 11 am and my room is ready).

3. No need to rent a car. (I love this since where I live you must drive everywhere)

4. The length of many hotel hallways. (I stayed in the last room at the end of the hall at Bally’s and I felt like I should pack a snack for my walk to my room) :)

5. That the strip is so c lose to the airport

6. That the shuttle from airport to strip is so cheap ($8 each way)

7. The size of the hotels and the difficulty of finding your way out at times can be an adventure.

8. That I would come to love Vegas so much

That no other hotel has built at least one tower comparable to THEhotel. It is the only true all-suite hotel in Las Vegas. I was so disappointed when Bellagio opened its Spa Tower and it was just more of the same old rooms. Same with Palazzo, Encore and the Augustus Tower at Caesars. You would think one of them could have built something comparable.

What initially surprised me on my FIRST visit to Las Vegas in the early 1990's:

1. That even McDonald's was flashy! LOL

2. That food was so cheap.

3. That the Strip was not really that long.

4. That this small-town girl could possibly view so many lights!

What surprises me about 20 years later:

1. That food has become so expensive.

2. That the city allows so much vagrancy in the street: beggers, guitar players, "homeless," etc.

3. That the city has not found a way to keep the smut peddlers off of the Strip.

4. That the city has grown so big!

My first trips years ago...

How seedy and dirty it seemed to me

How very cheap a good meal was

How Cheap Shows and drinks at bars were

How much money people gambled

How Cold it gets at night in fall/winter

Now..

Food is crazy expensive

Drinks are crazy expensive (when not gambling and at a club or restaurant)

How expensive show tickets are

How oppulent Vegas has become

How much I gamble when there now.

I rarely seem to win

How much I still love going after all these years, all the losses, and all the changes!

What surprises me now when compared to my first trip as a legal adult in 1973:

How expensive most food choices and shows are. Even as recent as 10 years ago, there were so many less expensive "2nd tier" shows around $25 or so.

How long it takes to figure out where everything is in a casino/hotel and how easily it is to get turned around in these huge places! (and it's not all related to my advanced age, LOL)

How much more walking an LV trip takes.

How much I appreciate some of the properties that are now gone.

How much music is being piped onto LV Boulevard and into the casinos and how LOUD it is, sometimes from 2 or 3 places at once playing different music. This is a big change from just a few years ago. While walking on the strip, there are some places where it's nearly impossible to carry on a conversation. A friend and I gave up our planned slot playing at PH in October, because we couldn't sit next to each other and talk while playing.

How much I enjoy just wandering through the various properties and looking over all of the architectural and decorating details.

How much faster my gambling budget disappears. Even 10 years ago I could play a LOT longer on $20. Small wins and more regular bonuses made for longer play.

karoleigh, just so you know. The strip is county, not city. The city of LV is downtown.

The city does control the things you lament. Due to much legal wrangling, some of the strip is a total free speech zone if you will.

Underpar,

Oh, yeah, I do remember that now. Also, I complained many years ago to the chamber of commerce of las Vegas about that and they cited the right of free speech. They said they tried, but nothing could b done. Sigh. Wish they could.

What surprises me--

Just how much time I spend here on TA, living vicariously through others dreaming of being in Vegas- until I can go again.

My other surprise is how far in advance people book. I mean I couldn't live with myself waiting 4-5 months. I book as close as possible while still getting a reasonable Air and Hotel rate. normally 5 maybe 6 weeks

What still surprises me....how much we walk. I go into it knowing how much we would walk, but I'm still surprised how tired I am every single trip....

How close the casinos look to each other when they are actually quite far apart. The thing that amazed me the most was how close the strip is to the airport. The first time we flew in I swear it looked like it was just a short stroll over to the Luxor.
