Is this your first trip to Las Vegas? How many days will you be in Las Vegas? Some background info will help people give you advice which best fits your situation.

Most people will recommend staying on the strip for your first time. Although it is more expensive it is possible to stay on the strip pretty cheap.

I think a lot has to do with your age. If your 25 you will probably have more fun on the strip but if your 65 you might find that downtown is a better fit.

I highly recommend that you stay on the strip your first time to Las Vegas. There are hotels that vary from basic and cheap (Imperial Palace, Bill's) to mid range pricing (Harrah's, Bally's, Monte Carlo, NY NY, etc.) to luxurious and more expensive (Bellagio, Venetian/Palazzo, Wynn/Encore) to very upscale properties that do not have a casino (Mandarin Oriental, THEhotel).

Use smartervegas for access to discount codes for each property. Look over a few properties with those codes and determine which are in your price range. Come back to the forum if you have any questions about location, property, etc.

It depends on your style and desires.

First timer - I can only vote for the strip

IMHO there is nothing wrong with downtown by any means. In fact, one of my most wonderful memories came from a downtown stay. But, the strip is where you want to be!

Rhonda- just my opinion; but that's what you asked for.

Staying off the strip on your first visit is like going to Hawaii and not going to the beach..

It is sensory overload and your brain begs for more. You will not be disappointed choosing a strip hotel- if you get any sort of view all the better

Doesn't Downtown get busy and rowdy on the weekends with the Fremont experience going on?

vegasfan1, I would say it gets busy on the weekends when I've been there. But I wouldn't describe any of the weekends I have been downtown as rowdy. It's sometimes crowded, always fun.
