Children on planes and taxis

My husband & I love vegas. Before we had children we'd go 2 to 3 times a year. Now however, it's kind of difficult with two young toddlers to go anywhere. Last summer was the first time we left them both to get away. It was great. This summer however will be different. My husband has always dreamed of taking his parents to las vegas. This will be a dream trip for them since they have never been anywhere. However, they are our usual babysitters so one of our children will have to go with us while our other child stays with my mom. I suggested to my husband that we gift his parents this trip and send them on their way but he feels uncomfortable with this since his dad is sick and will be going to dialysis twice while there so we're doing with them. We will be taking our 3 year old daughter and leaving our 1 year old son with mom. We will be doing mostly sightseeing, eating, and shopping since his parents haven't ever gambled and don't seem interested in doing so. My Question----How do i handle my child while on the plane & taxis. Will she need a carseat and will I have to lug one back and forth? This will be our first big trip with her where we will travel by plane. Parents out there who have travelled with thier children--please advise--I'm very nervous about this but my husband is a great man and I want to make this trip as smooth as possile for him and his parents and our child. Thanks

TA - full of unsolicited advice, Unreal.

I would check the car seat since it is not necessary on the plan. Would use it for cabs or rental cars.

Your child will not need a car seat for the airplane. My son has travelled short and long haul since he was 6 months old. We travelled one time WITH the car seat and swore we would never do it again. I always make sure he has a neck pillow, a blanket and a snuggy (stuffed animal) with a variety of other things that others have mentioned and away we go. If you rent a car, you will need a car seat. But, as others said, check that seat in and not take it on the plane.

A car seat on the airplane is for THEIR comfort and safety. It will definitely be cumbersome for you. If its not needed in Vegas, check out the "Cares" harness. Fits in your pocket, keeps child sitting AND will prevent them from sliding out in case of severe turbulence. We have travelled 15 flights with our two year-old twins and wouldnt fly without them!

Have fun! Check out the M&M building as well. Lots of fun!

Check the carseat. Also, I'm sure you're aware you have to pay for a seat for your child on the plane.

I too, like some others, are wondering about your situation. Personally, I would either take both children, leave them both home, send hubby with his parents, or just let his parents go it alone (as his dad has had dialysis and knows what to expect). His dad is only having this treatment twice while there. If they are able to handle two toddlers while you and your husband go to Las Vegas (not an easy feat, trust me!), I can't imagine that they won't be able to handle Las Vegas without an escort.

Personally, I don't see the need for your husband to have to take care of his parents. If they're well enough to travel, I believe they'll be just fine taking care of themselves while there.

This seems like a major inconvenience all the way around. For your children, your mom and yourself.

I'm not criticizing, I'm just pointing out the obvious. I have grandchildren and I definately enjoy my freedom while on vacation. As much as your in laws love your children, I'm not sure that will be part of their "dream vacation."

Whatever you decide, I wish you luck in your travels.

I've taken children from 8 weeks to 5 year old on transport Atlantic flights for years and never had to have a car seat on a plane.

But a couple of tips- take a boaster seat for the plane very lights and easy to carry, take a small umbrella type stroller or buy a cheap one in Walmart when u get their and leave it.Take plenty of snacks for the flight and most importantly stop worrying.3 year old are quite portable and can go almost anywhere with you so just enjoy your holiday.

FIrst off......you are SO, SO fortunate that your in-laws are willing to watch your kids while you and your hubby go on trips!! So many grandparents would never do this if it meant watching the kids so YOU can go and have fun! "If you're going on a trip, take me with you!!"

When you're riding public transportation such as the bus, shuttles, cabs, etc......you're not required to have a carseat. As far as the plane, yes, it's more for their comfort and safety. But at 3 years old, your son might be big enough where he doesn't really need one for the plane, but only you can judge that. But yes, it definitely is a pain to travel if you have to lug one with you, as well as a stroller, diapers, etc. The joys of traveling with little ones!

In order to use a car seat on a plane in the US it must have this delectation on it in its approved uses section: "This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft".

Check out www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/ for more information.

We've flown with our 3 year old son out of the country and to other places in the US and did not bring a car seat. He actually did great on the plane without the car seat. I wouldn't worry about lugging it through the airport.

When we vacationed with our little guy, we rented a car and the car rental provided us with the car seat. It was quite convenient!

Good luck and have fun! :)

Yes, if you rent a car, most rental car places will have carseats too. But, heaven forbid, my wife would NEVER do this!! "Who know if the carseat is safe or not!" "Do the car rental places even inspect them for safety and recalls??" "Is the carseat up to date with the latest safety features??" "Do you know how many other kids have used that carseat?????"
