How far would these two hotels be from the strip, within walking distance?

Rio is walking distance, Golden Nugget is not.

Rio is 1km from the strip, also has shuttle buses which downtown does not. The sidewalk from Rio has a freeway overpass involved, and the sidewalk is right by the road, but still it is a fairly easy walk. Golden Nugget is miles away from the strip, on a seedy downtown street.

Neither are what I consider really walkable. Rio is about a mile West of the strip - on the other side of the highway. Some may make the walk, but it is not pedestrian friendly. Use the Rio shuttle bus if you stay here.

GN is located about 3 miles north of the northern part of the strip on Fremont street (along with about a dozen other casinos). If you stay at the GN, you can take the WAX, SDX, or Deuce buses to the strip.

I would take a cab from both spots.

I'm not sure why BingBang is calling Fremont street seedy. Downtown (Fremont street) is as safe, if not safer, than the strip. Fremont street is "owned" by the FSE, thus considered private property - thus no porn slappers. Also, it is patrolled by both security and Metro police. (Fremont street is also in Las Vegas city limits, the strip is not).

Rio to the strip is walkable in distance, but really not something that is a desirable walk

Why do you ask?

How many nights are you considering? For a first trip to Vegas and staying only a few nights I would pick Golden Nugget and have fun downtown - you can take a bus to the Strip easily. For longer, split the trip between 2 hotels - a few nights downtown and then a few nights on the strip - or Rio with their shuttle.

If you gamble downtown is great and easy walking distance to different machines and tables - if you don't gamble I think downtown would get old fast.

If you really just want to stay somewhere and head to the strip - then stay at Rio and use their shuttle.

What, did Johnny Appleseed's family plan a reunion on Fremont? Is the city planning to plant an urban garden under the canopy?

Fremont St "seedy"? What a ridiculously ignorant, uninformed comment.

I agree with Missika. I have stayed at both properties in the last 2 months. Nugget definitley not what I would consider walkable. $18 dollar cab ride to strip from GN. And GN is DEFINITELY NOT in anything remotely close to a seedy area!

Rio, is probably walkable, but you have to negotiate the freeway and is not a walk that is recommended. As others have stated, easy shuttle ride to Harrahs from Rio front door.

Good Luck, and IMO, save the walking for sightseeing while on the strip and on Fremont st.

I too, don't understand how someone could make a statement like that about Fremont St! You definitely see more "seedy" things on the strip, IMO.
