TR - Shows, Food, $20 Trick etc

Just returned from our Vegas trip yesterday. Wife and I went out Saturday via Allegiant and returned Wednesday.

This trip was different than my normal trip, which is going with a couple of buddies. I used to go a lot and was always comped rooms, but this year since I haven't been out in three years, I had to pay for a room. Normally, I pull an all-nighter or two and gamble for at least 12 hours per day. This trip, I was tired from work and wanted to rest so I was in bed by midnight every night but one and only stayed out til 2:30am.

We started off with check in at Bally's on Saturday around 5 pm. Bally's was sold out that Saturday night. I found a promo code on smartervegas that made the room $202 for four nights, South Tower regular Deluxe room. Well, I thought I would try the $20 trick even though I heard a guy in front of me ask for an upgrade and he was declined. Well, the young lady said "let me see what I can do for you". I told her I didn't care what floor we were on or if we had a good view, so she came up with a Jr. Suite in the North Tower. She said it was the last one she had available. The room was pretty standard but it did have a sofa and a separate dressing room with an extra vanity that my wife loved. She could get ready while I had the bathroom to myself. So for me, I think the $20 trick worked out well. The room was clean, big, decent view of the Bellagio fountains even though we were on the 6th floor which I liked because the elevator rides were really short. I have stayed in quite a few hotels on the strip, including Bally's, but after this trip, I think I am going to stay at Bally's more often. I like the staff and dealers, always friendly, and I like the location, center strip. I also like the casino because it is so easy to navigate. You do not have to wade through endless slot machines trying to find an exit. I will be choosing Bally's more in the future.

The saw three shows, Mystere, Le Reve, and Mac King in that order. We were going to see Gordie Brown the last night but he canceled. We both absolutely loved Mystere. We had never seen any of the Cirque shows so I wanted to start with the first. The acts were awesome. We will see this show again for sure in the future. Le Reve was good, and we enjoyed it but I am not sure I will see it again. I will probably see O next time so I can compare. We were glad we saw it, but we liked Mystere quite a bit better. The theater was amazing and there is not a bad seat in the house. We were 5 rows up right on the aisle where the performers come out the most. For Mystere, we were dead center in about the middle, not too low or too high. I used travelszoo and another site I cannot remember for promo codes and saved quite a bit. I got Level 3 seats for Mystere for $60 each, and Premium seats to Le Reve for $99 each. Mac King was next, and he was great too. Very funny and good magician. I used the Total Rewards coupon that I learned about from this site and got two tix for $26, the price of two drinks that came with the deal. We will go see him again for sure. We enjoyed it.

The wife loves to shop so we sent to the South Outlet mall one day. We were really disappointed as the selection was not very good and the prices were pretty much the same as the regular malls. The second day we shopped at the Fashion Show mall and enjoyed it much more.

Food was good as usual with one exception. The first night, I wanted to go to the Bellagio Buffett but the line was 4.66 miles long. So we ventured over to Ceasars and tried Rao. It was terrible. The service was slow, the food was bland, and the price was high. It cost us $130 and we each had 2 beers, no wine. We order Bruchetta, and it was 4 extremely hard pieces of bread with some sliced tomatoes on top. $17. REally? It was pitiful. I ordered the Veal for $49 thinking it will be good. It was terrible. I have had better Veal at Olive Garden sadly enough. I hate having a bad meal in Vegas because there are so many great places it should never happen. But this meal was terrible.

After that, we did Spice Market Buffet for breakfast and liked it. We did Wicked Spoon for dinner that night. We liked it pretty well too. Then we did Paris' breakfast buffet. I loved the crepes. Service was terrible there though. We had to flag down a different waitress to get us another OJ. We did Wynn buffet and loved it. I have had it at least 5 times in the past but it was better this time. The crab legs were awesome. Our favorite meal though was The Range Steakhouse at Harrahs. I bought the $3 coupons from Tix4Tonight and was disappointed when we arrived and they gave me a separate Tix4 Tonight menu. They didn't have a fourth of the steaks on that menu. My wife did use that menu to order a 10 oz Filet, so I saved $22 on that steak, but I went with the Bone-in Ribeye which was not on the "special" menu. Our steaks were perfect. I have had dozens of incredible steaks in my lifetime, to the point that I cannot recall "the best" one. But this steak was way up there. I don' recall having one any better really. It was a great steak.

So, in summary, liked Bally's, loved Mystere, and loved the Range, really liked Mc King. We will do all of those again.

Short and sweet, enjoyable read. I like the Range as well. Sounds like they changed up the T4T thing a bit. Any gambling?

Thanks for posting.

Oops, yep did quite a bit of gambling though not as much as usual. I got killed on the tables for the most part, playing BJ, Craps, Three Card poker, and Ultimate Texas Hold'em. I gambled at Paris, TI, Wynn, and obviously Bally's. I would lose several hundred on the tables first each night and then finish in the Bally's poker room. There were a lot of "local regulars" playing as well as some newbie tourists. Fortunately, I caught great cards and hit many flops. I played 6 sessions and won the first 5 and lost the last. The most I won was $700 and the one time I lost I gave $300 back. I was happy with my play as I did not lose a hand the first four days where I called a river bet. I had the best if I called. Now the last two days, I took a couple of bad beats and I played two hands poorly where I shouldn't have been in them. I also bluffed quite a bit which obviously no one knew. They all thought I was playing really tight because I was catching good cards and hitting flops therefore I was always showing big hands. But, I made it a point to not show my cards unless called on the river. I showed two hands in six sessions. ONce was a bluff that I couldn't help myself because the player was a jerk, and the other was a pair of QQ after I had caught AK, AK , AA the previous three hands. I was jamming the crap out of those pots and won all three before the river so I showed the QQ so they wouldn't think I was stealing every pot.

Overall, with the poker, I lost over a grand on tables and won a little over $2000 playing poker so it was a good trip. We shopped alot, eat alot, took a lot of cabs, and I came back with $500 less than I started with. We spent over $600 shopping, $600 or so on food, $150 on cabs, etc and came back with more than I hoped for.

Great TR!! Thanks for posting, very enjoyable read.

Nice score on the upgrade at Ballys. Same thing happened to me last time. Jr Suite, very nice. We didn't have a good view, but I didn't care. Very nice room.

And, let me get this straight, the guy in front of you just asked nicely and they told him no upgrades, but you asked nicely with a 20 dollar bill and got "the last one"? hmmmmmmmmm ;-)

Do you feel for the average diner that the Tix menu for the Range still has a good amount of choices? I normally eat a sirloin or a smaller steak of some sort. Sometimes shrimp. I would probably be looking at something like your spouse had.

Yeah, there were at least 10 entrees or so on the Tix4Tonight menu including the 10 oz Filet. If you want a smaller steak, that one is great. One thing I liked, when they said 10 oz or 20 oz etc, it was at least that large. My wife's 10 oz steak was bigger than a lot of so called "14 oz" steaks I have seen. It was a nice size piece of meat. She couldn't finish it. I know there was a 6 oz Filet with a 4 oz Lobster tail on the Tix4Tonight menu too. I almost went with it but I wanted a bigger steak.

I'm not trying to talk you out of it, but O is a lot closer to Le Reve than it is to Mystere. But even more swimming than La Reve, and certainly less acrobatics than Mystere.

I'll take a trip with the wife over one with the boys anytime. Outside of being better company, I also do and see more things instead of just gambling. Thanks for the report.

Thanks. I forgot to mention this was my favorite trip to date. I enjoyed being with the wife. We went at a much slower pace. I really do not like shopping, but while she did, I sat in benches and relaxed. I have a feeling one of the reasons I played better poker was that I was focused and not tired. I played short sessions, 2 or 3 hours vs my normal 12 lol.
