Driving Advice

We are heading to Las Vegas in a couple of weeks and have hired a car to drive to the Grand Canyon (we have reservations at El Tovar).

It is our 1st time driving in USA, are there any driving guides available - main things to watch out for etc or has anyone got any decent advice, apart from the obvious "they drive on the other side of the road".....lol

Any other guides or advice would be great.

There are stacks of sites addressing this question. If you type 'Driving in America' into Google you will see them and can work your way through the information.

Generally-speaking the other side of the road thing is pretty important. You have to get used to it and not accidentally get it wrong. It happens.

If you're a decent, confident driver you will have no problems at all driving in the U.S.

Stick to the speed limits, know your route and have everyone else in the car help you with directions and keep a general eye on your driving.

I've driven many times in the US - apart from the other side of the road issue I'd also suggest you keep the car topped up with gas.

In some areas the number of gas stations might be limited and in a strange car with unknown fuel consumption you don't want the risk/stress of running out of gas - it's nearly happened to me a couple of times.

When driving in cities I find it useful to explore streeet view on Google maps before I travel to give me an idea of landmarks etc to look for to reach my destination - I also use Google maps to get my online driving directions.

Thank you for that. We are driving from Vegas to South Rim Grand Canyon and so far people have said that the route is pretty straight forward.

I'll google driving tips before we go.

One major thing that you need to be aware of is that in the US you may make a right turn at a red light if it's safe to do so providing there isn't a sign saying "no turn on red" or a specific right turn red light arrow. When making a right, a red light is just a sign telling you to yield, or as you'd say in the UK, give way.

It's a bit of a scary rule for us Brits to get our heads around but once you have not only is it a doddle but you realise it's a great idea.
