First trip back to Vegas in 22 years, what to expect!

Or not expect.

First visit we were travelling USA from Australia and was on a tight budget,we lived on 99c shrimp cocktails,2 for one buffets and free drinks by playing slots slowly..

We drove into Vegas and was handed piles of coupon books at the visitors centre and made our first and only win,a trinket from the free spin chocolate wheel.

We stayed at The Shalamar 2 couples in one room lol, didnt even ask room prices on the strip as we thought they would be way too expensive.but always wished I had stayed at Flamingos.

Almost got married in The Little White chapel next door to Shalamar but come to my senses as the beer wore off.

22 years later we are coming back,Flamingos is booked The Little white Chapel is booked and we will be there Saturday 2nd June :)

I take it we wont be getting 99c shrimp and free drinks all night or the hoards of free cards hats mugs keychains like we still have from all those years ago.

We might also be disappointed in Flamingos but when we booked this trip we didnt even really consider any other hotel,i should have just stayed there 22 years ago.

Will we still enjoy it how it is now or will we love it as it is now?

Gday

How long will you be in Vegas for?

I watched a video from my first trip the other night in 1999 and gee it has changed since then which I struggled to remember..

I love the place but just dont enjoy the 15 hour flight..

I cant say I was there 22 years ago but I watched a video of 1988 not long ago as well as my 1999 video

..

Just by the looks of it there is so many more hotels or should I say bigger hotels... Alot more hotels on top of each other..

Only 18 months ago I picked up a $1 hot dog at the Sahara and survived but that is now closed.. There is some places that are cheap to eat so if your on a budget you will find them..

I cant see you being disappointed with the Flamingo good location and the rooms get good reports on here.. The only problem that could be an issue is there is a little construction going on around the flamingo at the moment.

You can still get free drinks while you gamble with a $1 tip to the waitress of course..

Not on such a budget this time,i have had 22 years to save up lol.

22 years ago they hadnt even built Excalibur!

Is the construction really bad around flamingos? I dont think it will affect us too much unless there is a sky crane connected to our Go room.

We are there from 2nd June until 8th June then a cruise to mexico from Long Beach then back to Vegas for 3 nights in Harrahs then 8 days to drive around SoCal a bit.

I got the room at Harrahs for almost nothing so i suppose there is a lot of construction around that area.

Head downtown to Fremont street where you can still get $.99 shrimp cocktails and 2 for 1 buffets (with FSE coupons).

Well at least we can get a bus or monorail this time to Downtown, last trip it was cab or walk everywhere.

Any must not miss places?

I want to go to Ellis Island for some cheap beer, casino Royal for some cheap beer and Fremont hotel for some cheap beer :)

The wedding is sort of a bit of fun given we have been engaged for 31 years lol

We have a few guests flying over and want to treat them to the cheapest possible buffet close by just for fun, maybe a cab to Terrible s for a $7.50 buffet

for the reception lol.

My first trip was 22 years ago too. We stayed off strip at he sheffield inn. I remember playing black jack with the guy who played mack on the tv show night court.

Check out cheapvegas , it is a cool site with a bunch of cheap stuff to do, see and eat in Vegas.

You will love the pools at the flamingo. I think they still have an estuary for live flamingos, or at least they did.

Definitely check out the bellagio fountain show, the mirage volcano and the sirens show at treasure island. They are all free and within walking distance of your hotel.

Congrats on the marriage.

The best thing is to read all you can on this forum so you can pick whats important to you to see.

Don't think there is much construction at Harrah's presently.

Staying at the Flamingo and Harrahs will put you in a decent location to see some of everything. From the Flamingo, your close to Caesars, Bellagio, Aria and City Center, Paris. Panet Hollywood.

From Harrah's the mirage is across the blvd, The TI(Treasure Island) north of harrahs is the Venetian /Palazzo, and the Wynn/Encore. These hotels are worth a walk thru. For shopping, the Forum Shoppes at Caesars, Miracle Mile Mall surrounding Planet Hollywood, and the Fashion Show Mall north of the TI, across from the Wynn Encore.

You might want to save Downtown for another visit. Same for Off strip casinos like the Rio, Palms, Gold Coast.

There is a free tram from the Bellagio thru City Center to the Monte Carlo. another free tram between the mirage and TI. a third free tram from the Excaliber thru the Luxor to the Mandalay Bay.

an all day bus pass will save you some walking.

You will not recognize Vegas if you haven't been there in 22 years. Our very first trip was in 1988 (24 yrs ago) and we returned the next year to see the Mirage completed. We stayed at the Flamingo that year and enjoyed the 99cent shrimp cocktails downtown. Here are some photos from that era:

We also took video: www.youtube.com/watch…

No more cheap buffets. The average dinner buffet is probably $25. Jersey and mtroh have some good advice of what to see and do....

Sorry to say but in my honest opinion. I think Vegas absolutely sucks compared to 20 years ago.

If this were me, I'd find all the pictures I took 22 years ago, put them on disc, and then take pics from the same spot, for a before and after thing.

Given that you have a good amount of time in town, I would definately go see downtown for a night.

Hope you have a blastr and write a trip report!!
