Short weekend TR: GN and Mirage

I don't think I've ever really done a tr before, generally like just reviewing places, so this should be short! Will post as reply...

1. Re: Short weekend TR: GN and Mirage

Just returned last night from a quick weekend trip to Vegas.

We made the most of it, though, by staying at 2 places, even though not sure I'd recommend switching when only staying 2 days, but it actually worked out pretty well for us this time.

We drove in from southern OC, California, Saturday morning and landed downtown at the GN by 2:00. Only took us 4 hrs, traffic was good, and hubby thinks he's Mario Andretti, so I actually enjoy the drive!

No line at check in, and our room was ready! Yea!

We had a jr. suite, and I've stayed in this room type before, but this time we lucked out. Our room was on the top floor facing Fremont, and it was much larger and brighter than the other jr. suite we'd had. The walls were a light beige and there were beautiful red accents in the room like a red leather hassock in front of the sofa. I remember our other suite as having much darker brown paint. Very happy with this room.

After settling in, we went downstairs looking for a drink. There's a new bar at GN, it was really nice, part of it sitting right out on Fremont. Can't remember the name, but it has a number in it. I ordered a Grey Goose and Soda with a dash of cranberry and lime. Delicious. $10, but worth it.

Then, over to Binions. Played some Pai Gau. Usually at Pai Gau, the advantage is that you can at least play for awhile. We lost our first 4 hands, and decided to get some food!

Binions Cafe is so good. I don't even want to talk about it, because it might get busier. But it really is a gem. We sat at the

counter, I got a hot dog, DH a burger. Delicious, friendly service, about $12 for lunch, what more can you ask for ! And where do you find lunch counters to eat at these days?

Later wandered over to Golden Gate for a little black jack. Really friendly dealers and pretty and friendly dancers. Hate the way some men just look glazed and weird as they watch the dancers, though. They look like they need to get themselves a room (by themselves!) quick. Yuck.

Downtown was really crowded and in its element Saturday night. The heavy metal band Warrant was playing. I remember the name, but none of their music was recognizable. I do remember why I was never a metal fan though. Didn't even like it in my 20s and now it just sounds like noise. But the crowd was totally into em...

Ended the night for a late pizza at the Grotto. Pretty good stuff.

Sunday morning we slept late and just relaxed and enjoyed our room. Husband went out for a smoke, brought me back some starbucks. There's a keurig in the room, but didn't use it. It's nice to have though, if you pack your own k cups. $10 for 4 cups if you don't.

Something else I noticed about the room -- there's no refrig. mini bar here. Not that I missed it, just found it surprising.

Checked out, drove to strip. Before going to Mirage to check in, we decided on brunch at Bouchon. Bouchon is always good, great ambiance and bread, food, everything. I had Croque Madam (love that name), delicious, dh had the smoked salmon dish. Had an espresso martini and hubby had a corpse reviver, an incredibly strong drink w/ specialty gin and absinthe. It was very tasty.

Every time I go into the Venezia tower/Bouchon, I'm reminded how incredibly pretty it is. Love it, even the washrooms are gorgeous!

Checking into the Mirage:

Lines were crazy, but we got into the VIP line since I'd gotten the Penthouse suite, and our room was ready, so it didn't take long at all at check in.

Lugging our bags across the Mirage felt like forever though. Its been a long time since I stayed in such a big casino hotel where we had to hike so long to get to our room. Plus, it was hot in there! The whole time we were there, it felt like the a/c didn't work really well.

Finally got to our much anticipated penthouse suite. Had a pool view, room E14. Very spacious, & pretty, but I gotta say it just didn't wow me for some reason...no way does it match a spa suite at the GN, or even a club spa suite at the Trop. I'd also choose a 1 bdroom at the Signature or Trump over this room.

Oh well, it's a very nice room, guess I'm too jaded.

Can't believe I'm being so wordy. Sorry. Gonna wrap this up.

Final thoughts:

Mirage outrageously crowded. Felt like walking with a herd of animals just to get anywhere. Getting coffee in the morning was an ordeal, lines just too long. Felt like Disneyworld.

Pool was gorgeous, but no shade anywhere to sit. If I'd come here with a family for a pool vacation, I would've been disappointed. Tons of families here, but I wouldn't call it family friendly.

Valet at Mirage when we checked out was miserable. We'd called down for our car ahead of checking out, but there was no record of it. Waited 45 min. in 105 degree heat. Should've self parked.

Overall, to date, Mirage is my least favorite place I've stayed in Vegas. Its worth it imo to spend a bit more to stay elsewhere, or to spend less and do a budget place that probably just as nice.

Enjoying your TR. The dancing dealers is the one thing I hate about the GG.

Nice TR. Thanks for sharing. Sounds like a fun short trip. Also, why did you stay at two different hotels?

thanks varment and rocky.

Hotels are my favorite thing in the world, for some weird reason!

So I love staying new places, and got a good deal on a suite at the Mirage, where I'd never stayed before, and also had a good deal w/ credit card points, so had a free night at Golden Nugget.

We drive into Vegas a few times a year...so know Vegas pretty well. I wouldn't recommend it, but it worked ok for us this time.

Also, I paid extra for a penthouse suite. Shouldn't have done it. On the Mirage website, I thought the PH rooms looked prettier, but in person, thought the walls with silk insets looked a little dirty and yellowing and the beige moulding a little dated...

Shoulda saved the $50!

Loved the review. Warrant sucked even back when they were quasi popular. That's why you didn't recognize their songs, and also why they are playing free concerts now.
