best Hoover Dam trip companies advice needed.

Hi.

We are in Vegas staying at Signature and wondered if anyone can recommend a good company to book a trip to Hoover Dam?

Bus there needs to be good as I travel nor well in busses.

IMHO, the best way to see Hoover dam is in a rental car. All the actual tours are run by the Bureau of Reclamation, so all you're buying is a bus ticket.

Rent a car, see the sites you want to see and book the "hardhat" tour of the dam, which gets you into the cool inner workings of the place. Make sure you take a walk on the new bypass bridge for a spectacular view of the dam.

If your not happy driving then Pink Jeeps and Grand Adventures are highly recommended. Pink Jeeps will hopefully take you to see the Big Horn Sheep and Lake Mead Overlook.

The smaller vehicles can get to the places coaches cannot.

Hi

I'm also for self drive. You can do much more with the freedom of a car. Hoover dam will only take half a day but on a coach trip (which I did many years ago) it seems to take best part of the day. They pick up from your hotel, then take you to a collection point, then go. A bit long winded.

If you do decied to rent, do so before you go. pre booked from the UK is cheaper and you will have all the insurances sorted. You can get a quote from ebookers, netflights or opodo. There are others but I find these ones good.

I'd do the rental car and get there early for the best pictures. Don't pay for parking in the parking structure--there is free parking across the Dam.

I'd skip the tour. If there was an hour long documentary on television about the Hoover Dam, would you watch it? Most wouldn't.

If you get a rental car, you can add Valley of Fire or Red Rocks to your day trip.

If I had a car I would also drive 12-13 miles further on to Willow Beach right by the Colorado river. It is well signposted so do not be tempted by other turn-offs.

Since you are currently in Vegas just talk to the concierge at MGM. Also look inside the plentiful tourist magazines for current pricing.

Pink Jeep tours has come highly recommended. But I agree with other posters that a rental car is the way to see it. Some may not want the entire tour and may want to stay longer or not as long as others.

There used to be a tour that took you to the Hoover Dam and then you took a raft down the Colorado River. That was more fun and scenic than just touring the dam.

And we all very much enjoyed Valley of Fire. But again, we made that trip in a rental car at our own pace.

Hope this helps!

Hi

Over looked the fact your already there, I would still rent a car. You will not pay anything like paying for a tour. Just don't get talked into too many insurance extras.

Rent a car for a day and drive out there. Its an easy drive and you can spend a couple of hours wandering around and exploring the place.

My son and I did the "dam tour". That's expensive vs. the "power plant" tour. But you got a couple of extra places. Power plant tour takes you to two places - one of the feed pipes that runs through one of the bypass tunnels left over from construction, and a bridge overlooking the generators. The "dam tour" also takes you out through a narrow tunnel to a vent on the face of the dam (where Chevy Chase supposedly crawled out and up the dam in "Vegas Vacation".) And then to a set of stairs that disappear into the distance up and down. So, if you're expecting to see a lot on either tour, you may be disappointed. We did enjoy it, but we're both something of geeks for this sort of stuff. We spent a lot more time just walking around up top.

With the rental, you can also stop off and explore some other casinos that you can't easily check out without a car.
