It's not Las Vegas. Almost everything people want to see is on the Strip.

Negative: When you wake up in the morning, you're Downtown.

Positive: You probably didn't pay as much for your room as you would have on the Strip.

Downtown is Las Vegas to me, I much prefer downtown. But it's definitely not the strip, which is what most people think of when they think of Vegas. Downtown is not anywhere near as glamorous as the strip--if you're looking for the glitz, you might be disappointed.

Some of the pros are that the rooms cost less, food costs less, and the casinos are close together so you can casino hop without walking a mile between casinos. If you will be mainly gambling, downtown is great. Many of the casino workers get to know you since the casinos are smaller.

Some of the cons are that it is not as flashy as the strip and to get to the strip you have to pay at least $25 one way for a cab or take a bus or rent a car (we take a bus and it doesn't bother us).

Some people are strip people, others are downtown people. Neither one is better, it is just what each person likes.

If you love to gamble indoors all night and sleep all day, it's OK. I personally can only last about 2 hours downtown.

I agree with what ktinca said.

Our last trip, October 2012, we didn't stay on the Strip at all. We rented a car and did everything off strip to take advantage of the lower table limits etc.

Only spent half a day on the Strip. I still feel like something was missing/ didn't get the full Vegas experience. We were there for over a week ...including GC time. Next time I will do it differently.

I think that I need to walk the Strip and enjoy the lights to get the experience versus driving somewhere else all the time. DH enjoys the driving somewhere else. Good thing he doesn't read TA ; )

That's just me though. Everyone is different.

It depends on what you're looking for. If you want to see the sights and enjoy the things on the strip staying downtown means a lot of traveling to get where you want to be, that's a big negative.

If you want a downtown trip where you can enjoy a number of bars and casinos with very little travel then downtown is perfect. The only negative is that during the day theres not much to do that isn't just gambling.

Don't let some of the naysayers here discourage you, downtown is awesome!

The strip has pirate wenches, volcanoes, fountains, varied architecture, roller coasters, night clubs, high end shopping, high end hotels and high end dining.

Downtown has the canopy show, music, cheap booze, cheap food, cheap gambling, cheap hotels and if you spot someone smiling you have a 50/50 chance of being able to count their teeth on one hand.
