Is hiring a car a good idea? Advice from uk posters please

We will be coming back to Vegas in April for our 6th visit. We are a couple in our late 20's.

We are saying on the strip and in the past have just used cabs and the express bus to get around.

The reason I have asked for advice from the uk is to see how people have found driving in Vegas compared to at home. Is it worth having a car? And which companies have you booked with. There seems to so many extra's : insurance, sat nav, fuel etc what do you need and don't need?

Thanks in advance for your advice

If you plan on doing day trips from the strip a car would be a good idea. I had a car for a 2 week trip to the US last year. If you do get one, get sat nav! I got mine through Alamo but it was part of a package so I can't give you the price.

I found driving there pretty easy (except in LA!).

If you are just going to be going up and down the strip it might be a waste of money to get one. I didn't use mine at all in Vegas and it was in car park until I went on an overnight trip to the grand canyon. Have a fab trip! :)

My group and I always rent a car in Vegas but only because we go away for a few days. The answer depends on several factors. Are you wanting to travel a long way off strip, go sightseeing etc and also are you day time drinkers.

The advantage of a car is clear, you can do what you want, when you want for a one off pre-paid sum. The disadvantage is the car my be sat parked for days at a time depending on your plans. If you wanted to visit off strip casinos one of you would have to stay sober.

As for price, I have a Ford Taurus booked for 8 days in May at a cost of £216 inclusive of all insurance. I use Dollar. If you decide to book a car, the majority of UK based sites have insurance packages built into the price.

If my trip was solely in Vegas, I wouldn't get a car.

Like you have always used cabs or deuce to get about. However this time we hired a car for just 1 day and it was great. Easy to drive around vegas because traffic is always so heavy, it gives you lots of time to get in the right lane!!..and easy to park in any of the hotels.

We used it in the morning to drive to Hoover Dam..well worth a visit if you havent done it before and in the evening we drove down to watch the baseball..again good fun

We didnt keep the car longer because obviously we were drinking every day and clearly we didnt want to drink & drive

Hi, I have a car booked. As I'm travelling with 4 children I thought it best, as we go in August and day trips for 5 also soon add up. Originally my eldest was going to drive, but isn't now, so we have gone with Alamo/Brits. They had the best price back in October and you also get free additional drivers. For an intermediate SUV, we are paying £304.00 for 2 weeks, including all taxes. I have a sat nav that I bought in Florida in 2011 and will be taking that with me.

I probably won't use it much, but as we are going to the Grand Canyon overnight, the Valley of Fire, the hoover dam and quite a lot of other places off of the strip, the few times I will use it, will more than save me a pretty penny in fares ect. A return trip from the Signature to wet'nwild for example, was not going to give me much change out of $100 according to the taxi estimator so that would be over $200 for us for the day without a car.

We always rent a car now, some days we don't use it but it is relatively cheap.

In the past we have gone to Grand Canyon South Rim, hoover Dam, Lake Mead, Valley of Fire. Other things we have done is the outlet malls, pinball hall of fame, off strip casinos like Sams Town, Jokers Wild. I found the driving real easy and not the stress like here in the UK. have used Dollar and had no problems.

Probably a waste unless you are travelling outside LV to say Grand Canyon.

I always hire either direct with the major operators through their UK website or Auto-Europe, because these give the insurance options for visiting drivers.

I usually take a middle package without personal accident.

If you plan visiting and driving in US again I would buy a US sat-nav (Wal-Mart $99 when I bought mine, paid for itself several times over).

If you have a UK sat-nav, it may allow you to download US maps.

Driving in US is easier than UK.

I don't think it's worth the hassle unless you are planning on heading to places way off strip like Valley of Fire, Grand Canyon etc. personally I like to get my drink on so driving is out if the question.

We always rent a car to get the freedom it gives you but don't use it everyday and definitely don't even consider driving if you are planning to drink.

I've found driving in the US to be actually easier than major cities in the UK - better roads and better drivers.

I normally arrange pick up/drop off at the hotel as I don't like getting straight in the car after a long flight with a few drinks even if it costs me a few extra $$ for the rental.

As long as you rent with a UK based website you'll get all the relevant insurances - my own favorite is Hertz.

Heads up.

Over here we "rent cars" or "hire car & driver" ie: limo.

We have "GPS" not SatNav.

May help avoid confusion when booking

I use my feet, the bus system, and the occasional taxi. I want to drink when I want to drink without thinking about when I have to drive. If you're not going off strip, there's not really a need for a rental.
