Today Show report on Resort & other Hidden Fees

On Saturday, 2/16/13, the NBC Today Show had a report on Resort and other hidden fees. One foreign resort had a resort fee of $45 a day!

When they got to Vegas, they talked about the hidden fees there. I think we can all guess what hotel chain they were talking about...Caesars! Oh, wait, you didn't guess that? Yep...the hidden fees they referred to there were regarding the minibar, internet access, and the $10 for a cup of Soy Milk - $4 for the milk, $6 in fees. Of course, they only focused on one product, not the fee if you got a meal for two, which in comparison wouldn't be 150% of the cost of the product. It was an undeserving black eye towards the Caesars chain, which in every case the menus or agreements clearly state the fees.

They did mention the Wynn chain as well, including the resort fee. But from what I saw, not once did they mention MGM's resort fee. They did refer to tripadvisor as a website one can look at to find out about fees however...and the resort/hidden fees that really anger people!

If it was a report on hidden fees, why would they even discuss the minibar? It's not like those items are free in the majority of hotels and the costs are clearly marked.

Will have to wait until NBC posts it to view for myself. BTW, I agree with the fact that charges such as internet are hidden since Caesar's props don't even post them on their hotel's sites. Instead, you have to use their search engine which is on another site entirely in order to find out what a "nominal fee" is. (about $14/per day per device so 2 devices cost you $28/day). Yes, these are hidden fees, not listed on the hotel's web sites.

Internet service is not required. You choose to get it. And when you try to access the internet, a screen pops up to tell you what the fees are for various access levels. It's hardly a hidden fee when you can't proceed without inputing your credit card number.

You are under the false assumption that internet access is free everywhere. It's not. You pay for it. You pay for it on your cell phone. You pay for it on your computer. The EXCEPTION is that it's free in some hotels. If I don't see anything about the internet being free, I expect to pay for it.

The hotel's website doesn't list all fees and prices. I don't see menu prices or gift shop prices listed either. Those, along with the internet, are optional and not mandatory, so it's not a hidden fee.

^ Exactly

Because common sense isn't for everyone, everyone has to be told what's what.

Hi

I've booked Treasure Island for 10 nights and only found out through Tripadviser about the $28 a day resort fees. For this I get coupons and internet access. As I've no interest in either can I opt out of the resort fee?

@tanya - No there is no opting out. That is why I usually stay at Caesars properties when I am going for a longer trip, they do not have a resort fee.

Tanya...what are you talking about? Just last week, in this post: tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g45963-i10-k612682… , you specifically state you were going to book TI but found out about the resort fee. Now you claim you booked it and didn't know about the fee? Your own statement proves you knew about it.

Roadnut, The hidden part is that they only say it is a "nominal" fee until you get there and then BAM! you find out that nominal can be $25 or more per day for the gym or even higher for internet. Then, after you are there, you can decide if you will spend the "nominal" amount that was not disclosed on the hotel's site but was off on another search engine site. "optional and not mandatory" does not mean it isn't hidden.
