Trip report February 27-March 7, 2013

Just got back from our Vegas trip. This was a different trip for hubby and I in many ways. We had planned to go to Vegas this winter and two of our close friends decided to come along. Then 2 other friends decided to join us. Hubby and I have never done Vegas with friends. We have gone with family a few times. Even though we just got back hours ago, I cannot remember day to day events so I will post as highlights.

I got an amazing offer from the Flamingo for 7 nights for $85. Couldn’t believe it as we are really low rollers. Called and sure enough it was for real!! Asked what they could do for our friends and they gave them an awesome offer too. Called our buddies who live about 45 minutes from us. They have been our friends for many years, I’ve worked with them and we all go to the same lake in the summer. They were in!!! Called Allegiant and got round trips for 4, checked baggage and chosen seats for a total of $1265. Another score!!!! Within a week of booking our mutual friends from down south emailed to say they would like to join us. These two are people live a couple of days away from us so we see them only once a year at the same lake (for about 10 years now) but keep in touch via email and phone. We were all very excited about getting together!!

So the 4 of us leave the ice and snow on February 27th and head to Grand Forks. We stayed at Lakeview Inn where we usually stay. We went to Texas Roadhouse for ribs (another Vegas tradition) and had a great dinner. Back to the hotel to get a good nights sleep before flying out the next morning. Well, hubby and I managed to have a good nights sleep but not our friends. Somehow they managed to get a room above a broken boiler and heard nothing but clanking and banging all night. Found out the next day that that room was not supposed to be rented out. The hotel was far from full, just someone wasn’t paying attention. Hubby talked to management and asked that they compensate our friends. Had their great continental breakfast and went to check out. They compensated both our rooms. Will we be back??? You betcha. That’s what I call customer service.

Flight was uneventful except the landing of course. I get excruciating pain in my ears on landing. I’ve tried everything I know and nothing really helps. Oh well, we were in VEGAS BABY!!!!!!!! I like going through Grand Forks because you go through customs driving down and don’t have to do the cattle call at the airport. Had a long trek to baggage and had to wait a bit. Went to car rental – Thrifty’s. PROBLEM. We always use Thrifty’s but never realized that whoever used their credit card to book the rental must be the one who rents the car. We used my credit card just because and the car was rented and our insurance bought under hubby’s name. He didn’t bring his credit card because we didn’t need it. What a hassle!!!!! It took a few hours of time between getting him on as an extra driver and me getting insurance in my name and so on and so on. Sheesh!!! They accepted the reservation on line with my credit card and his name! Why the hassle?? Anyway we wouldn’t let that ruin our vacation.

So on to the Flamingo!!!! I love this hotel!!!! The location and hotel staff are so excellent. Besides, they make the best pina coladas on the strip and the cw service is awesome. Of course we left our luggage with valet to bring to us later. I don’t know why people lug their luggage through the check in line. To each their own I guess. Unbeknownst to my hubby, I had received an email from Flamingo offering an upgrade to a Go Luxury strip view room. I don’t usually care about a strip view but figured this was celebration time and we paid a total of $10 a night for our room so why not? I knew from this forum that not all strip views can see the fountains so I did the $20 trick and asked the gal if we could have a fountain view. WOW!!! When we walked in the room, hubby was shocked!!! We had an amazing fountain view, the room was clean and we loved the TV in the bathroom mirror and the jets in the shower!! Thanks TAs for all the information! Our friends got a basic room and when we went to see it I was amazed at how large it was. Perhaps it was remodeled or something. It had the wood floors, king bed and very roomy. The gal said it was fountain view but from the 10th floor there was no fountains to be seen. We all thought the beds were amazingly comfortable. Room service was excellent as well. To be continued

SHOWS:

The only show we went to see was LOVE. All six of us went thanks to myVegas we had 4 free tickets between hubby and me. The seats they gave us were fantastic. Last time we saw LOVE we were in the nosebleed section and I thought it was amazing. I now know that seat location for this show does make a difference. You could really get into the performance without straining your neck to see all that was happening. Can I just say that if you are going to Vegas it is silly not to play myVegas and get all the free stuff. It cost nothing. You can put your game on automatic spins and get something else done while you collect points once you have played for awhile. I just can’t say enough about it. 2 hours after arriving home from Vegas I was back at the game collecting for next trip.

LOVE is a fantastic show and I felt like I hadn’t seen it before. Everyone else in the group enjoyed it too!!!

Of course, the strip itself is a never ending show. The fountains were gorgeous and everyone was impressed. My favourite street performer was the guy in the sailor suit. At first I thought ‘whatever’ because he seemed to be doing nothing but putting on a coat, but when he turned into two little dancing sailors I was blown away!!!!

Side note: not as many card slappers this go round. Not as many timeshare people either or maybe they just got tired of us saying everyday that we were leaving today.

FOOD:

Hubby and I are not foodies by any stretch. We like fresh, good tasting food. However, our friends are foodies so this trip was very cool. We ate at the Flamingo buffet the first night when the other 2 friends arrived. They were all blown away by the selection. The food was great and we were able to sit by the windows which was nice. Due to a recent health issue, I can’t eat much so I just decided not to feel guilty about not taking full advantage of being able to eat a lot of the buffet selections. What I did have was scrumptious. Everyone walked, or should I say wobbled away quite satisfied.

Hubby and I ate at the Luxor buffet for breakfast one morning thanks again to 2 free passes from myVegas. NOT good. Limited selection, dried potatoes. We found enough to satisfy our hunger but I would have been mad if I had paid for it. Oh well, you can’t win them all.

The 6 of us ate at the Bellagio Buffet for lunch one day. Again thanks to myVegas, 4 meals were free. Not only was the food fresh and tasty, the service was amazing, the selection was amazing and we got to go through the invited guest line with our free complimentary buffets from myVegas. AWESOME!!!!!!

Hubby has always wanted to eat at Gallaghers. We’ve never gotten around to it. But this time, again thanks to myVegas, we had a $75 NYNY food voucher and chose to use it there. The 6 of us were impressed!!! I had the cowboy prime rib and it was delectable. Cost was very reasonable, for us $145 minus the $75 voucher, that’s with gratuity and drinks. I had decided not to share a meal with hubby which is something we often do now that I can’t eat much at a sitting. I just wanted him to enjoy a meal of his choosing. I’m glad we did although I left way too much on my plate. Our foodie friends were impressed as well. I call them foodies in a good way. They are not food snobs, we just trust their opinions because they are knowledgeable about food quality and preparation and are excellent chefs in their own right. So for them to be impressed was a tribute to Gallaghers in my opinion.

We discovered a couple of new eating places for us this trip. Hubby and I had never been to Aria. One day when we were exploring on our own, we went there and when hubby got hungry, we stopped at the nearest place which was the Todd English Pub. Another WOW!!! We shared a fish and chips. They presented it in 2 separate plates so the sharing was done ahead of time. This doesn’t always happen we have discovered. The food was excellent and we loved the little bucket of popcorn on the table while we waited for our food. We ate outside on the Aria courtyard and enjoyed the outdoors and ambiance.

Our friends wanted to try a signature restaurant and chose Bouchon. To be honest I was skeptical. I was reluctant to spend a huge amount of money when I knew I wouldn’t be able to eat much. But in the spirit of friendship we went along. WOW!!! This was a truly amazing meal. I skipped appetizers but hubby had the cheeses. He was in heaven. I ordered the French onion soup. MMMMMMMMMMMMMM. It was a meal in itself and I only ate about half of it. Hubby had the lamb. I had a taste and it was amazing. Everyone around the table was impressed. Our server was a past restaurant owner in Canada and lived in our home town for some time. Coincidence! The others ordered salads and the presentation was amazing. Desserts were delectable. Hubby and I shared a mousse of some sort and it tasted like silk. Oh yes I have to mention that their fries were like none I’ve ever tasted.

Of course we couldn’t go to Vegas without having breakfast and a meal of ribs at Ellis Island. Both were good as usual. We had not been to their new BBQ place before and it certainly is an improvement over the booths at the micro brewery. The rack of ribs was huge. I ordered a half rack and ate about half of that. Very very tasty!!!

The tropical something or other – the Flamingo café- was closed all the time we were there. We did pop into the food court one night for a quick bite. We had Pan Asian I believe it was called – do not recommend.

GAMBLING

If anyone is still reading here’s the scoop on our gambling.

I love slots – penny slots. I find it awesome entertainment. I bring the amount of money I am comfortable spending on entertainment. If it is all gone at the end of the trip, that’s okay with me. This trip, I brought back 80% of my budget!! Hurray for me!!! I loved playing at the Quad, the Cosmo, and the Flamingo. All three places were good to me. Off strip, Silverton’s was amazing. Anything to do with buffalos would bring me wins of $25 to $300 dollars. I play minimum full line bets. Occasionally I will double my bet for a few spins. I was playing China Mystery our last morning, waiting for our friends to come down for brekky and hit a bonus. I got 248 free spins. Breakfast was delayed. I cashed out at over $300. What fun. I did well with the Chun Som Doy or something like that at Silverton’s. It was like an ATM. Must have hit 20 bonus rounds. I was sorry when hubby was finished shopping and our cohorts were ready to go back to the strip. I could have played there all night. Hubby played the beer stein machine and I played the Anthony and Josephine machine next to it. He did very well and so did I. Managed to take out $50 to $200 a few times on it. All in all, it was the most successful gambling trip I have had.

Thanks to anyone who is still hanging in there reading this. I pour over every trip report the minute I book our Vegas trips. So I thought I should give back.

TO SUM UP

Hubby had a great shopping trip at Silverton’s again!!

Everyone enjoyed the Valley of Fire side trip.

Will definitely book a Go Luxury view room from now on. One night we ordered in room service, sat on the lounge in front of our window and watched the fountains as we ate. BTW flamingo room service was excellent and their house salad was very good. I look out my living room window at piles and piles of snow….I miss Vegas.

Gallaghers is now on our must do list for every trip.

We will continue to support Lakeview Inns with our business. They believe in customer satisfaction.

Flamingo has the best pina coladas, Silverton comes in second and Cosmo third. I do not drink actually but when in Vegas, I love my pina coladas.

Speaking of which, what’s with Vegas. I don’t know about you but I am really not myself. I have NO WORRIES, and go out of my shell a lot. I even have pics with the Kiss guy, sticking my tongue out. Really??

Loved discovering Aria, the tornado tunnel things, Todd English pub.

Love LOVE

Bellagio conservatory never disappoints.

That chocolate fountain is still intriguing.

Sipping coffee on a lounge in front of your room window watching the fountains ROCKS!!!

Sipping free baileys and coffee in front of a winning machine in the morning rocks too. Honest I don’t really drink!

No one does a better job of taking you away to another place like the Venetian does IMHO. The floors, ceilings, gondoliers, St. Marks Square are all awesome. Hubby got the deluxe shaving kit this time and loves it.

Vegas continues to be my happy place. I am so glad that my hubby loves it too. It was fun sharing Vegas with 4 newbies who are great friends. Til next time, hubby and I are going to play myVegas to get a free show and some free food. Meanwhile I will start checking out flight specials and hope Flamingo offers me another great deal! Thanks to this forum. This is my go to place for filling the gap between visits and getting the latest scoop.
