2 weeks in Las Vegas so plenty of days to explore

Can anyone advise where you would go from Vegas (self drive) for a number of interesting days out or overnights tops - any guidance on visiting the Grand Canyon, and is it best to stop over, and if so, 1 night or 2

Many thanks

Hi, I would suggest Death Valley, 1 or 2 nights, Furnace Creek has the Ranch and the Inn, the Inn is so much nicer to stay at but depends on the time of year, as Inn not always open. DV is awesome, hire a 4x4 as there are some great tracks to explore. It feels remote, in the summer (we have been) temps are around 120 degrees, its mad but us Brits do not get to experience heat like it. Scottys Castle is well worth a visit. Grand Canyon, I would suggest 2 nights, so you get to see sun set / rise. Bryce Canyon is good for 1 night. If planned well, you can get up to Monument Valley too, that will take your breath away. Gouldings Lodge is nice. (but alcohol free). Remember not to plan too much driving after arriving in Las Vegas as you will have terrible jet lag. Give yourself a couple of days and enjoy your trip whatever you do

Laughlin is a nice break from Vegas for a couple of nights. A 90 minute drive from Las Vegas on the Colorado river. In fact the hotels are built right along the river. They have paddle boats, water taxis and river cruises. Quiet laid back atmosphere, and incredibly reasonable hotel rates and dining.

The above are some great overnight trips; another one if you want to be away two nights would be to drive and see Zion National Park and Bryce

We were there 2 weeks in January - and the time just flies by even if just staying in Las Vegas and doing day trips. Some of the things nearby to Las Vegas to do is

a) Springs Preserve

http://www.springspreserve.org/

This is a great place to explore with lots of outdoor areas as well as museums - be sure to time it wihen they are open. Its a short drive from the strip.

b) Atomic Museum - This ia an interesting museum, albeit on a not so pleasant topic,

Again just a short drive from the strip.

c) Red Rock Canyon (and plan on stopping at Red Rock Canyon Casino nearby) afterwards. Its about a half hour drive from the strip or so -nice museum, and the red rocks are amazing.

d) Drive to the nearby mountains and have lunch at Mount Charleston Lodge

e) Hoover Dam (and be sure to stop by Ethel M's on the way there or back for candy tour and cactus gardens)

Thanks for your response and ideas for trips. It seems like 2 weeks using LV as a base is, plus enjoying what LV has to offer, is going to work.

Head to California:

San Diego

Santa Barbara

Anaheim

I don't know how much you know about Vegas, but unless you are REALLY into gambling and the shows, it will be hard to fill up two weeks in Vegas. Take advantage of how long you have traveled to get to the US and check out some of the other great stuff that is within driving distance.

I agree with the California thing wholeheartedly...We went to Simi Valley California and to San Diego at different times using Las Vegas as a base and really enjoyed ourselves. Kind of a boring drive though.....but it was worth it!

I have been in the area many times.

If we're there in the wintertime, we take several side trips. The first one is to Death Valley, which is definitely not one of my choices for vacation in the summertime, but it is quite wonderful in the wintertime. After that, we head up to Mesquite, Nevada to spend a few nights. While we are there, we take a trip to Zion National Park in Utah. We also go to Snow Canyon near St. George, Utah. When we head back to Vegas, we drive through the Lake Mead area, which is quite pretty and interesting. We enjoy Valley of Fire State Park. Some years we go up to the Grand Canyon South Rim and stay overnight in Tusayan, Arizona. We will enjoy the park, then head out of the park and enjoy the Indian ruins and volcanic park near Flagstaff. We will stay at Flagstaff.

Our summer plans are a bit different. We leave Las Vegas and go to Bryce Canyon. Why? Because the elevation is higher there, so the temperature is quite comfortable. The scenery is otherworldly. We go to Zion Park, too, but we go to Kolob Canyon because of its high elevation. We do not go to the lower part of Zion in the summertime, because it is crowded and hot. We also take the breathtaking drive up towards the Kolob/Zion reservoir and hike in the high country there.

I would never, could never, just spend two weeks in Las Vegas.

We were there in November and took a day to the Hoover Dam and Valley of Fire and loved it.

If you head into Californa, the drive through Joshua Tree National Park and Mojave National Preserve was great too.

Whenever we go to Vegas it's always for 2 weeks. For us it's just not worth flying all that way from the UK for any less and I can assure you it's NOT hard to fill 2 weeks in Vegas even if you're not into gambling or shows :-)

Having said that, you are travelling all that way so you should try and see as much as you can of the surrounding area. Enjoy!

I'm going for 10 nights in September. Going to book my flights next week. Should I add on another couple of nights? I'm worried that with the jet lag 10 nights will fly by. We're planning on doing a few trips as well...
