Traveling to Vegas with 17 and 18 year old.... bad idea?

We are a family of four with a 17 and 18 year old. We all really want to experience Vegas. Are the kids limited in where they can go? Are they allowed in for all shows? Is it a place teenage children would enjoy? Any advice would be appreciated.

do a search - this topic is discussed daily and u will get a lot of info. the kids will be able to walk throuhg most casinos - can not stop and watch. most shows they will be OK and would probably like the cirque shows. depends on your kids if they enjoy - very personal and subjective. the shows, restaurants, pools if in the season, arcades and the "glitter" of the major resorts/casinos all interesting. i would defintely sray at a nice resort with a great pool if you are going in the summer.

day trips to grand canyon and red rocks - especially by helicopter will be a treat. consider the day trip to raft a short distance in the canyon.

Your kids are young adults.....if you can trust them at home alone.....meaning that you know that your kids are mature enough not to throw a wild party while you're gone, and you have someone (like a neighbors, or your children’s friend parents) to check on your kids once in a while.....I would suggest you give your kids some "pizza" money and leave them at home. FWIW, I lived on my own since I was 18 years old.

Bringing them to LV at that age is going to cause a little problem, they're too young to drink and gamble.....meaning that they would feel "cheated" or "teased". There are things that your kids can do while in LV.....but, this depends on your kids....if they like sight seeing, and trying some fine dining…and want to see certain attraction only available in LV, then go for it……but if your kids like to hang out with their friends at home, and play on the internet a lot….going to LV would be more of a waste of money (air line ticket, plus most hotel will charge your kids $25 each, that $50 extra per night), and the kids would only be an “anchor” to you and your spouse.

Hope this helps

Cheers

We went to Vegas last spring with a group of teens for a paintball tournament. We stayed an extra day to experience Vegas. The boys got bored quick. There really is not that much for them to do. A roller coaster, swimming, game rooms, and shopping. All things they could do close to home. There is more things they can't do in Vegas. You will probably get some reply's with long lists of things to do. Just keep in mind for example that a roller coaster ride is not something that will keep them busy all day. If they will be OK with just walking around them maybe they will be fine. Hope this helps.

Based on your expectations of this trip, I agree, leave the kids home. They will be bored and frustrated.

Vegas,

Do you know my kids? Ah you must have had a teenager at one time yourself? We take a huge trip every year Jamaica, Cancun, cruises etc. with the kids. Well my husband chooses Vegas for our next one. My 17 year old daughter is thrilled to go. I think my 18 year old son was done traveling with his mom and dad two years ago (so sad) but he could be convinced to stick it out one more year.

I think your advice was dead on. They are too young to do much on their own but way to old to tag along behind mom and dad seeing the sites. How humiliating! For anyone who has travelled with pouting teenagers, they have the power to suck the fun right out of a vacation. After some thought this may well be our first trip in 20 years for just the two of us!

Thanks vegas, you put words to my concerns.

Thanks to every one for thier responses. I think this sounds like an adults only vacation or a different location if the kids choose to come along.

I had to laugh at how you stated that pouty teens can suck the fun out of vacation ( or anything for that matter!) How true! We've gone to Vegas several times, every now and think, 'oh, my kids would love to see this". In reality, my youngest teen would love the pool. My oldest only for a short time. Niether are 'arcade' hangers - not for very long anyway. As stated the rollercoaster is about 3 minutes. Not to say, that some families can have a great time there (not EVEN going there with that subject), but I'll take my boys when they're 21. Part of the reason we love Vegas so much is that it is our adult get away with no guilt for not taking the kids. They'd be bored or constantly looking for things to do. Plus....we like to gamble. :)

Guess I'm lucky that my son has never been pouty or hard to please. He has no problem hanging out with mom. We went to Vegas right after he turned 19 and he loved it! Didn't have to worry about him trying to sneak and do something he wasn't allowed to.

Bringing my 18 year old son next week, along with my hubby, daughter (22) and her boyfriend. My son is sooo excited to go. He is never hard to please and he is always such a good sport. My husband doesn't care to gamble, so just the two of them bumming around suits them both. We're also seeing Ka and the new show, Love. Planning to take in: Fremont Street, Manhattan Express, Bellagio Fountains, to name a few.

Honestly, I feel better with him along with us. We are all looking forward to it and I'll give a TR upon our return and let you know what its like with an 18 year old.

BTW, I would NEVER bring a young child to LV. That would be torture for me - and for the child. We always left ours with grandma!

Come on people!!! Didn't Clark Grizwold's kids do quite well in Vegas Vacation??? If Rusty and Audrey can get it done, why can't these young high rollers???
